Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter Does Helmet-Less DJ Set In LA

thubmnail icon: Daft Punk's Thomas Bangalter Does Helmet-Less DJ Set In LA

Last night's Dim Mak Tuesdays at Los Angeles's Cinespace started off as a clusterfuck of Ed Bangers (SebastiAn, SoMe, Gaspard from Justice, etc.) celebrating Busy P's birthday. Then Thomas Bangalter surprised the crowd by jumping on the decks, and everybody jizzed in their pants. Twitter lost its mind, obvs. The three song set saw the human after all DJ spin Daft Punk's "Rollin' & Scratchin'," DJ Mehdi's "Signatune" (on which he featured in the first place), and ... Prince's "Raspberry Beret." Videos of people losing it this way:

Pretty sure Prince himself would blush if he received these bows on the first notes of "Raspberry Beret."

SAUSAGE FEST.
Also, playing songs you write and perform is a set.
Sorry DJs. No respect for your "art" from me.

I think I am speaking for most DJs when I say we feel the same way about your "art"... or more broadly, anybody who jerks off in to their own navel.

So is Thomas Bangalter the short haired sleeveless guy who needed ear plugs and turned the volume knob at the 2:23 mark of Raspberry Beret, or is he the blue shirted long haired guy with the backpack who turned volume knobs for the rest of the song?

Why does the backpacked dude lick the mixer at 4:30 of Raspberry Beret?

And what is the name of the small mammal that's attached to his forehead afterwards? I'm guessing it survives on a diet of neon and sweat. Also, if that's its natural habitat, its species apparently has a terrible male:female ratio.

Wow he is losing his hair! I miss that curly little fro of his. I'm such an old hag- last time I saw him dj was almost ten years ago. It was in Miami. Also seeing them at Hammerstein ballroom in the 90s in NYC- LMAO. Well it's nice to see them get hipster love. What about Cassius? Are the hipsters on to them? I used to be really into the Paris hype scene wayyyyyyy back before dj aoki it's cute they all follow this scene now that's it's not considered innovative anymore.

I have to disagree with all those dj critiques. I generally tell people I am not a musician. On saturday I was asked how long I have been making music, I was very much confused as it has been years since I stopped, then the question was specified and i was asked since when I had been dj'ing. For bands being a dj makes you a musician. It is hard for some people to get the dj magic across. It is an art as you have to know what you are doing, after all there are a lot of people that cannot dj out there...

I do believe he made it to the Boston, Montreal, and Chicago gigs. I have enjoyed ALL daft crew gigs ...but as bitchy as I sound sorry, the videos just make me chuckle. all the commotion in the background " OMIIIGAAAWWWD.." I thought that was typical at DJ sets. People who can't dance crowd around and stare as though the DJ might do something besides hunch over the turntable. If the gawkers are lucky, they'll see some head-bopping or a power gesture during a climactic moment.

I WAS THERE CHILDREN. I CAME ALL THE WAY FROM OKLAHOMA FOR THIS... I WAS ONE OF THOSE WHO GLEEFULLY RECOGNIZED THOMAS AND GUY-MAN HANGING AROUND BEFORE THE PARTY. THE NIGHT WAS ABOU A GROUP OF FRIENDS CELEBRATING THE BIRTHDAY OF BUSY P. EACH MAN PLAYED 3-4 TRACKS. THEN THOMAS REMIXED & RE-EDITED ONE OF HIS EARLIEST BANGERS(ROLLIN N' SCRATCHIN') WITH HIS LATEST BANGER(SIGNATUNE(BANGALTER RE EDIT)). HE IS THE CO-COMPOSER OF BOTH TRACKS! TO WHICH HE ADDED RASPBERRY BERET FOR THE LOVE OF HIS PAST WITH PEDRO, I GUESS. THIS WAS A PARTY NOT A SHOW, AND I WISH THOSE KIDS WOULD HAVE STEPPED DOWN FROM THE FRONT OF THE STAGE SO I COULD SEE THOSE FLYING FINGERS!!! THESE GUYS HAVE HEART! ALL OF THEM! Hello ladies and gentlemen, I've just came across this discussion and being truly sickened by some of you, I've decided it'll be a good idea to throw some salt into the open bleeding wound.

An average dj buys produced tracks for money on vinyl or in digital from beatport or wherever else (ready, mastered material that somebody else has created), beatmatches them (or theese days the software does it for him) and fades between them using 2 level faders, a crossfader and two 3-band eqs. It's as simple as blowing a fart and anyone that isn't rythmically crippled can learn how to beatmatch in couple of weeks of intense practicing, most often faster than that. Anyway, having this magnificient skill is enough to achieve the following: take all perceptual credit for the recording being plaied ('cause he "spinned it", and most people believe it has to do with some remarkable sorcery), shitloads of splendor (it's usually a solo performance, one person show), women's interest, free drugs and alcahol, VIP treatment, and a lot money if you happen to be in the right place at the right time. It also lets him/her be called AN ARTIST in various media, tagged as such on festival ID's next to bandmembers that actually do create something, and generally have a fucking blast.

I'm a composer and a sound engineer and I've been a professional acclaimed dj for most of my adult life, snorting coke for free, sleeping with women way too beautifull for my capabilities and being more than aware how rotten and fake it is all the time, as well as of the fact that it's all a tool, serving as the foundation of something everyone in his/her early 20's would call a KICK ASS LIFE.

If anyone thinks that dj'ing is a form of art, it can only be caused by the following:

a) one is a dj himself and enjoys all this shit around him way too much (as I have myself actually) to accept anyone trying to point out that the king is actually naked. This leads creation of some kind of magical aura and never-to-be-disclosed techniques of handling those 6 knobs and 3 faders etc. and all this crap you read in interviews about "dj skills" which being close to none are already enough to perform live in front of hundreads of people.
b) has never plaied an instrument, nor made any attempts of creating any music, and has no clue how it's being done and what kind of complexity and commitment is involved in the process. There are the kind of people you'd expect a question : "how would you compare dj'ing and producing" from.
c) didn't have a clue what a dj is actually doing behind the decks... 'till now :)
I'm no native speaker so please forgive my grammar.
Have a nice day.

John

John Doe, your coke habit has turned you into a dick. If you are so acclaimed and proud of your opinion, why comment anonymously? Everyone who is anyone as a DJ is there because they PRODUCE! Even the douchey guys (Tiesto, Oakenfold, John Doe, etc.) book gigs because they have a hand in production! I thought DJing was supposed to be a way for someone to program music dynamically. You talk like you hate the very thing you claim to know so well. You must be over 30 and, therefore, untrustworthy. It's 2009, spellcheck is real...

Ed Banger Records and Daft Punk are revolutionary. Around the time of Daft Punk being managed by Busy P was the golden ages of house music, around the time of Cassius, Stardust, Le Knight Club, Paul Johnson, etc... Busy P manages Ed Banger Records, which has been around for many years and he brings new innovative, original, and talented producers with many different musical backgrounds, like hip-hop influenced DJ Mehdi, heavy, distorted influenced SebastiAn, disco-funk influenced Justice, and more....

Just because there are no live instruments being used in performances, it doesn't mean that they're not musicians. Instead of playing live, they use software to create abstract sounds to emulate a certain style of music, and believe it or not, that takes a long time. If that's not music, then you can call me a fool.

Also, judging someone like Thomas by his "real" appearance is just dumb. Enjoy Daft Punk for the music, not for their real identity. If you don't like it, too bad... Don't think twice of the music because of his appearance...

That's all I gotta say.
