Dan Deacon Gets Hipsters To Dance At The Whitney

Dan Deacon lugged his duct-taped Casio electronics and Sally Jessy specs to NY's Whitney Museum of American Art this past Friday as part of the Whitney Live series, getting the kids to do the famed "Ethan Hawke!" and "Gattaca!" countdown. Then, of course, they danced.

You can see more clips here. Nothing against Dan -- he knows how to party -- but these videos make you understand why people hate hipsters. As we've learned in the past, though, you sorta had to be there. With all the breathless blog reportage detailing his quips, sing-alongs, and dance taggery ... how much longer do you think he can pull off this same show?

Quite frankly I'd rather see a Dan Deacon show complete with dance-offs, sing alongs and glowing skulls over a snooty hipster band that just stands there and tells the crowd to shut-up.

No no no. These aren't hipsters. These kids are just fashion victims with bad dance moves.

i think its funny that people would much rather debate music on a blog than actually go to a show and have fun

first off, this is from deacon's myspace blog:

Since its a fancy, well respected museum please dress as INSANE/STUPID/COSTUMED/TO THE 9's/CRAZY. this will be a lights-on-the-whole-time show it would be awesome if the audience looked totally bonkers, colorful, and weird. this performance will be a very heavy audience participation type show. i'm counting on you

(as noted here: http://www.imposemagazine.com/mag/index.php/2008/02/11/dan-deacon-whitney-museum-manhattan-ny/)

i guess his efforts had their effects.

second, he just came off a full national tour with his video projected "ultimate reality" performance piece... not exactly more of the same. but whatever.

Is he deliberately making fun of retards by acting like one? Or is he actually some sort of noise making savant? I can't decide so I'll just move on...

I like Dan Deacon and his music, but that quote is making me laugh like a little school girl right now.

Thank you, Elliot.

Dan Deacon's approach to electronic music isn't anything too new. Reminds me of a lack luster and hipster ridden Kid 606. The only reason he is popular is because of his gimmicks and Pitchfork debut. As for his electronic style, it inst anything special, its rather dull to say the least. He is just lucky to have the networks and resources he has. To be honest with you, the surrealism and absurdity at his shows are weak compared to Burning Man events. Hahah, I guess he is spinning my room mates wedding.
