Dave Matthews Unveils New Song At $15,000 Concert, We Remain Unconvinced Ticket Was Worth It
Recent Starbucks signee Dave Matthews teamed up with well-traveled fret-master Tim Reynolds this past Saturday as part of the East Hampton "Social" series. As you recall, the high-cost concert events launched with Prince on July 21st and then head into decidedly less sexy territory with our man Billy Joel, James Taylor, and Tom Petty. Well, looks like even Matthews 'n' Reynolds aren't as attractive as the Purple One to those funky socialites: Tickets weren't moving swiftly enough for the July 28 gig, so the asking price of $15,000 (hey, more than a broken Smashing Pumpkins guitar!) were slashed to $3,000. Um … better? The 80% markdown didn't do the trick, so school employees/family members were allowed to bid on 200 tickets and courtesy of Matthews himself, members of his fan club could purchase tickets for $250.
During the intimate set, the deeply discounted duo unveiled a new track, so far untitled, but setlisted as "#27." It's a spare, bluesy number that flows lazily, like a Southern river. Or like somebody punchdrunk from spending more on a concert than a new car. Check vid after the jump.

c'mon, tix for dmb were never $15k. that was the price for the 5 show series...when those weren't selling out they split the pack and sold tix for individual shows at $3k. and more power to dmb if he actually offered some of his fans a chance to see the show for a much more affordable price.

Yeah, I'll back you up. Crash was a big part of my high school days. Two concerts. Okay three. And then I moved on! But I've gotta say - hate their music or not, they built their fanbase organically. I had the DMB phase too...some of my friends are still in it unfortunately. I moved on...no hate for the band. They are all very talented (especially carter...phenomenal drummer). Just not my cup of tea anymore.

I'll be the first one to admit to chuckling at someone using the phrase "I'll back you up" in a post regarding Dave Matthews. I'm surprised there hasn't been more backlash against a post about DM on the gum. Really, Dave and Tim sets are amazing; much more so than full band shows. And to the guy accusing all DMB fans of being rich, snobby, white kids: you're an idiot.

me, too. sometimes i'm embarrassed about it, but most times i'm "whatever". i liked dmb a whole lot in high school (i'm from 30 minutes outside of charlottesville, and this was when they were just starting out). then, i got all too cool for school about them. now, i like them. i doubt i'd pay money to go see them ever again, but i'll buy their records every other year or so. i like music.

As a former student at the high school where this "concert" took place, I figured it was my duty to attend. Without $3000 to blow, a bunch of us went to listen in the woods on a trail about 500 feet away. We could hear Dave pretty well from back there, but was that good enough for us? No way! We decided to try to sneak into the show.
The area was surrounded by an 8 foot high fence and swarming with police...it felt like breaking into a military complex. Helicopters flew overhead. Each move we made in the dark attracted the attention of multiple flashlights and possibly night vision goggles. Finally, we found a place where we could slide under the fence, outside the main area. Nonchalantly as possible, we walked toward the shining city built on the Lacrosse field. Unfortunately, there was another security checkpoint blocking the only way in. The lady asked for ID cards and without a fat stack of bribe money, we panicked and ran back into the woods as she called cops over.
So I didn't get in, but at least I heard the whole show and got a brief view of the stage. And I wanted some of those fancy jellybeans!

Hi - I'm a typical Stereogum reader and I hate DMB because everyone tells me that I should. I have no appreciation of sheer musical talent, but would rather dislike something because a group of people outside my comfortable hipster zone likes them. I do like Tokyo Police Club though... I think they're gonna be the next big thing (like Mission of Burma crossed with the Pixies, except they're still learning to play their instruments which is so cool and totally indie).
Fuck off haters... it's okay to like Dave Matthews AND Wilco AND Arcade Fire. I promise you it doesn't make you less of a person.
