Devendra Banhart & The Spiritual Boner Perform "Lover" On Conan
Conan had the very special treat the other night of introducing not only Devendra Banhart but his backing band The Spiritual Boner, in the studio at 30 Rock to perform Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon's soul-full cut "Lover." Dev's rocking a black-on-black ensemble, eyeliner, and big bad voodoo arm raises, while Spiritual Boner rocks the congas et al. "That was killer!" says Conan afterwards, not speaking the truth. Sounds more like Devendra's spent the past few months singing along to a lot of Elvis records while sitting on Jim Morrison's couch, which probably is exactly what happened.

wow, that was really infuriating. for the most part, the song sounds like a lame version of david bowie's "sound and vision", until the stupid samba part at the end. and that line "blow a kiss and change the world, we're gonna change the world!" made me pray for nuclear holocaust. fuck peace. there, i said it.
i've given this douche so many chances to impress me. he's failed for the last time.
i really can't wait to see animal collective instead of him tomorrow night.

I've said this to friends in private now feel compelled to hearby proclaim what everyone already knows within their hearts:
This guy has a smidgen of talent, is occasionally soulful and may have good intentions but is otherwise the musical equivalent of a two-cent Tyrannosaurus Rex ripoff. Specifically, the Bolan & Finn variety.
The only True Spiritual Boner can be found here:

After all, you can't get romantic on a subway line...
(Though the Metro Orange Line will take one to the east side of Topanga's base; AKA the suburban valley side. However, I can't imagine walking up those hills to be comfy or fun wearing knee-high fringe boots.)

For those of you dissing on Devendra, if you haven't listened to anything pre Cripple Crow, back off. I've watched this guy grow, and, though I'm not completely happy with the direction he has taken, Nino Rojo and Rejoicing in the Hands remain two of my favorite albums. I've seen him play three times, first alone, second with a quiet backing band, and third with a full on jam band set up post cripple crow. The first time I saw him was the best, and the last was pretty uncomfortable, I just didn't get it, didn't understand why he went in this direction. His new one might not impress me, but I still have respect for the guy, for those two back to back albums that remain sparse and beautiful. I understand the whole T Rex comparison, and maybe he's done a lot more drugs since those early albums, but songs like At The Hop, The Body Breaks, We All Know, they're lyrically great.

isn't this why they invented faster, 3 chord rock?

Ahhh, this was really lame. I like a few of his songs, but this seemed a lot closer to Sanjaya.

Zappa made some goofy songs too. Maybe Devendra is trying to put the humor back in music?

Devandra Bernhardt is perhaps 1% as talented as Frank Zappa. His band looks like some sort of L.A. bohemian nightmare. The kind of guys who smiley groovily while sodomizing 12 year olds.

dig how he almost face-plants at -1:51.

hey i can't sing, dance. write, be creative or get the gals . so? I'll dis others instead. raise my self to heinousely self made heights and drop pearlies on those that do. Dev is subtle, gentle , original, sweet voiced and fun. He has touched his creative self which is more than you could reach with someone else' bargepole. There's room for all in this vile crapfest called pop , music or media so get real and ruminate on your crappy nowhere asses.
