Diddy Misses Diana, Tom Jones Covers Arctic Monkeys
On what would have been Princess Diana's 46th birthday, a large list of huge names you mostly don't give a shit about paid their tribute in song at Wembley, the creepiest of which was Diddy's re-appropriation of the Police with "I'll Be Missing You ('07)." Betcha never thought a testament to a fallen gangsta rapper could double as a sentimental salute to a passed monarch. Yes, Princess Di is gone, and that is very sad ... but Puffy's spoken word interludes and sky-pointing are just weird and lame. Nobody should leave that guy with a mic in hand on stage for that long. Unless the plan is to whitewash the pain of Di's death with the more tragic memory of Diddy's white-suited ham-standing.
There was a whole lot more from the concert-tribute yesterday, but little worth noting from a performance standpoint. Except for maybe Tom Jones's set, picking awesomely titled cover tunes for the loving memory of Princess Di: Prince's "Kiss" and Arctic Monkeys "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor." Check 'em after the jump (A'Monks at 6:00).

Nelly Furtado's performance of 'Man eater' was actually pretty good....

"So compassionate...so royal...an incredible mother. MAKE SOME NOISE FOR PRINCESS DIANA, Y'ALL!!!!"

WHAT'S THE BIGGER CRIME???
Diddy being dressed for the spur-of-the moment white party while attempting to memorialize an icon he knew nothing about with a bastardized Police appropriation?
OR...
Tom Jones wearing that sparkle-motion powder-blue leisure suit while butchering the Arctic Monkey's and not even attempting to do something with that receding-miniature-afro-thing that he's sporting?
I DON'T KNOW, BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THEY'RE ON AN EVEN PLAYING FIELD HERE!

"...So royal..."

To appear on the front of the Daily Mail

Since the last time I even thought about Aerosmith, Joe Perry has played with Sanjaya at the A.I. finale and helped Tom Jones butcher songs on a Princess Diana tribute. His career hasn't turned to complete shit or anything.

But have you tried his hot sauce?

LOL, you guys are awesome. I love the Arctic Monkeys. I also love all those hipster bands you like - The Hold Steady and The National and Arcade Fire and Spoon.
I've seen Tom Jones play 5 times now. 4 of which were in Vegas. He is the king of the cover, and he's awesome. I understand it's not cool to like a singer over 60 (unless he either died before 30 or is Johnny Cash), but I think somebody peed in some of your Vitaminwaters today...

I'm sooooo glad I wasn't the only one creeped out and confused by what's-his-name-this-week. I was laughing and crying and cringing all at the same time.
I think the Princes meant really well with throwing this conecert in their mum's honor and all, but their idea was just poorly executed with some of the musical choices they made.

unfortunately i watched a few hours of that mess.... and tom jones was probably the best thing all day. the man is a genius. for some reason i thought the princes had better taste, but i was wrong.

"Who the fuck is Tom Jones?"-- seriously? I figure the reason for asking has to be: a) retarded, or... b) too young even to have latched on to Tom's two last bursts of retro-popularity with the hipster set, both in the mid/late 80s (when he did the cover of "Kiss" w/ Art of Noise) and in the late 90s, when he sorta got lumped in a little bit w/ the whole 'swing' thing. Other than that, he's just another old geezer taking away valuable blog space for Arcade Fire, I guess.

I have to say I felt mighty uncomfortable during this concert when Kanye was doing "Touch The Sky" and delivered the line "I must have died in the accident, 'cause this must be heaven." Klassy.

Even klassier was Kanye opening with "Golddigger." I'm sure the princes loved that word associated with their mother. Thank god he cut it short.

Tom Jones has officially trumped Paul Anka in terms of awesome covers.
...or am I being hypnotized by that sweet-ass black and white background?
who told Diddy that he looked good on the dance floor?

Tom Jones turned a great song into an amazing song.

that event was always destined to be a disaster from the moment it became clear it was going to be a pop concert, as opposed to an actual tribute concert (which would have been more tactfully done in regards to the lineup and song choice). Watching the prince's "jive" along, trying desperately to be down with the hipster kids was kinda cringeworthy.
