Duran Duran On Broadway
We realize they've only had two notable songs in the last 20 years, but for some reason we're always rooting for Duran Duran -- maybe we miss the '80s? Maybe it's just a reflex? Whatever the case, Double D have taken their comeback show to Broadway and we've taken notice: Some folks are staying up late to argue the merits of Sufjan's suite sounds at BAM (more on that later), but if you head over to the Ethel Barrymore Theater, you can catch yourself Le Bon and the boys performing three-sets nightly (until the 11/13 finale) in honor (and promotion) of the group's forthcoming Red Carpet Massacre.
According to an article in the NY Times, one set is the new album from start to finish, then comes the so-called "electro set," and then finally, an '80s retro extravaganza. Since we're talking in three, Timbaland also did three co-productions for the record. He initiated contact with Simon & Co. by telling 'em he wanted "to vibe" with them. Bad vibes, Timbo. Also via the Times is this interesting quote from bassist John Taylor, explaining the group's current nowness:
Working with these hip-hop producers, we had to write songs faster than we’ve written them in 20 years ... And unknowingly we were just grabbing into the zeitgeist in a way that we would not have normally done. I think as a result we got something that was a little bit more of the moment.And which moment is that? You be the judge after watching these -- again, three -- videos from the current nine-day stand. On the acoustic-tinged "Box Full O' Honey," at least, Simon sounds good as he ever did.
Yeah, maybe we're being too nice. But then, well, things get a little sleepier...
"Falling Down"'s a pretty appropriate title, no? Actually, it wakes up a bit in its recorded state. And, finally, the more raucous title track from Red Carpet Massacre.
See, the crowd really came alive on that one. Sort of. We're curious to know how it was to see "Rio" or "Girls On Film" or whatever ... "Save A Prayer"? Anyone go?
Red Carpet Massacre is out 11/13 (the same day the Broadway stint folds) on Epic.

Trekked from Nebraska to see the show. Sat in the second row of the balcony-thought it was going to come down there were so many people dancing and singing. Admitted this didn't happen until the 3rd set, but the people who just came for nostalgia were sadly disappointed. This was no band looking to do a greatest hits show. I like the new songs. Too bad you didn't here Skin Divers or Nite Runner both great songs to get you up and dancing. Both with Timba singing in the songs. Liked Box Full of Honey, but fell in love with Tempted. Give the show a try. The only way you'll be disappointed is if you go in just wanting to hear the hits.

I was lucky enough to see the show on my birthday-- the night before the Broadway stagehands' strike. It was a show that I have been waiting 24 years to see...34 Candles...and it was well worth it. The band seemed relaxed, happy and John Taylor's hotness has only multiplied. The first set with the new songs was strong, but I was really hoping for a more Theatrical Experience before they broke it down with other songs. I think a director would have served the show well, as the intermittent video show on various screens was only meh, in my opinion. The best part was probably the "electro set," as it played to their strengths. I prefer electro DD to funk DD, but that's just me. Timba-DD is also a fun, new direction for the band. Looking forward to the album release on Tuesday. Did I mention how hot John Taylor remains?
