Erykah Badu Joins My Morning Jacket To Call "Tyrone" In Dallas

thumbnail icon: Erykah Badu Joins My Morning Jacket To Call "Tyrone" In Dallas

Remember that time My Morning Jacket made an appearance as the world's wettest wedding cover band at Bonnaroo this year? The monsoon-y marathon session stretched out to 4AM, along the way involving Kirk Hammett on "One Big Holiday," covers of Kool & the Gang and James Brown, and lots of soaked clothes and goosepimples. For all of that, my most memorable moment came while hearing the opening chords to what sounded like maybe some obscure, slinky soul MMJ b-side and thinking "shit if this doesn't sound like 'Tyrone' by Erykah Badu." And then it being "Tyrone" by Erykah Badu.

Well people in Dallas Saturday night probably had a similar sensation, when during MMJ's encore at the Palladium Ballroom they heard the same chords and must've thought "shit if that doesn't sound like Erykah Badu." Only this time it was also shit if that doesn't look like Erykah Badu. I really thought that the Bonnaroo cover of this one would be MMJ's best one forevermore. But you win, Dallas.

The visual's not great, but the voice and fro come through loud and clear.

Sorry to say it Jimmy, but Erykah sings that a little better than you. Thanks to Brad Williamson for filming it and sending it in. That was fun.

We were lucky enough to be off to the side of the stage... the whole place went absofuckinglutely NUTS. It was really really cool. She didn't come out until that second verse iirc, it was quite a surprise.

Great stuff.

There is a mp3 of MMJ covering this song in crystal clear quality from some radio session a few years ago.

They definitely brought the house down in Dallas over the weekend. I also got to go to Bonnaroo and saw their whole set this year. I can say it was a little more intimate at Dallas, and the lighting was cooler since it was indoors, minus Bonnaroo's massive glowstick shower during Gideon. Both shows were absolutely off the charts. I also recorded the whole song with Erykah Badu in my youtube videos @ http:www.youtube.com/rideincircles
The video quality is good, but the audio isnt the best, I also recorded One Big Holiday @ Bonnaroo with Kirk Hammett and thats there also.
I have been blown away twice by My Morning Jacket this year, They ROCK.
