Fleet Foxes On SNL

thubmnail icon: Fleet Foxes On SNL

Last month Fleet Foxes topped several Best Of 2008 lists including our own. No surprise then that the Seattle quintet's performance of "Mykonos" and "Blue Ridge Mountains" was the highlight of a night of lackluster topical comedy. Robin Pecknold checked in here before the Saturday Night Live broadcast so the least you can do is hear his band's sweet televised harmonies at Videogum. Jorma definitely enjoyed it.

Absolutely. The sketches this week were.....weak. But Fleet Foxes did not disappoint.

wow i guess I hadnt given the fleet foxes album much of a chance due to thinking it sounded to much like MMJ to me, but these performances were great! one of the best SNL spots ive seen in a long time, ill have to give them another chance

this band sounds nothing like MMJ and I don't understand why anyone says that, the vocals are different, the song writing is completely different, the structure of the band is different, and pretty much everything else is too

Well the vocal resemblance between Robin Pecknold and Jim James is striking at first - if you don't listen to much of Fleet Foxes (plus all the reverb). The trained ear, on the other hand, can easily tell the differences - and they do sound nothing alike after listening to both for a while.

I don't think it's unfair for some people to draw the comparison, I did, and loads of people I know - upon for listen - do too.

Agreed - I think that the vocals are similar at first pass, although the similarity is on the surface only. Am I the only one who thinks that they both also have a kermit the frog ish quality to them as well?

when I hear the fleet foxes performing watered down funk riffs I will admit they sound similar.

So, because a band has only made a few records in their career they are automatically inferior to artists with more albums out?

So, I guess artists like My Bloody Valentine, The Sex Pistols, Television, The New York Dolls, Nirvana, Vashti Bunyan, and Joy Division are all specks of dust compared to Ryan Adams and Lil Wayne.

Way to go.

A sign of their widespread popularity: My mom gets a text message from my 52 year old aunt telling her to, "Check out my new music find, they are playing on SNL tonight." My mom couldn't understand why I found this funny.

If she does, my mom will be asking me sometime soon what a "sexual robotics" is. I don't think she will be satisfied with my answer: "The combination of two words in an attempt at humor"

They were so much better on SNL then I expected...however, I still can't support this band. I feel like the entire world has lost all credibility by doing so. Sub Pop has become a complete parody of itself.

I hope that one day Sub Pop is sued over this band.

Much like Nickleback, they douchemasters will repackage the same song to you over and over again, except for the fact that Nickleback at least packages their own songs...not direct interpretations of It Still Moves.

Whatever. I am in my 30's and forgive me for still liking Built To Spill and Pavement.

Forgive you for listening to Pavement and Built to Spill? You're asking us to forgive you for one SINGLE thing in your post. And it's that.

In the words of that new Fleet Foxes song: I'm Amazed.

boastful, like hell. Most of them guys act like little kids when it comes to congratulatory applause (a quick wave, a little smirk). That dude on the left knew how to take it. Just like how you better learn to take it from me, donkey.

I don't really understand why you would compare the two either; there is no way you could ever mistake a fleet foxes song for a MMJ song, i just think Pecknold has such a better voice anyways, I saw them about 3 months ago and it was so mind blowing. i don't give a fuck if anyone says anything bad about Fleet Foxes.

There have been some really bad eps of SNL over the past 5 or so years, but that was the absolute worst EVER. Not a redeeming sketch of the bunch. Fleet Foxes brilliance wasted in a sea of crap.

There was one good sketch: the "Gitmo Going Out of Business" commercial was actually pretty funny, I thought.

Everything else was worthless.
