Foo Fighters Set To Release New Album, Antagonize Emo Kids
While engaging in our favorite past times -- playing Guitar Hero or watching Live Earth, for example -- we often think about how underrated the Foo Fighters are. Not from a sales standpoint, mind; just that they consistently churn out great pop anthems yet elude those 'congescenti' plaudits. And of course, Dave Grohl conducting his affairs with a wink and a tongue firmly-planted-in-cheek will always win points with us. So we're doubly psyched for the Foo crew's LP #6, Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace: both 'cause it promises more sing-along sweetness, and for it including a song presumably dedicated to anyone who has Fueled By Ramen in their MySpace interests...
Check the confirmed-but-unsequenced tracklist:
The Pretender"Cheer Up Boys (Your Make-Up Is Running)." Haven't even heard it yet, but it's already our favorite song. More Fighters stuff for your precious entertainment dollars: A remastered 10th Anniversary release of the band's double-platinum The Colour And The Shape with six bonus tracks. The new Foo, Echoes, Silence, Patience And Grace, is out 9/25 via Roswell/RCA.

I don't see how anyone could think the Foo Fighters are underrated.

the foo fighters?
this is a joke, right?
i'll assume it is and say: haha
Score = -2
I have underrated the Foo Fighters and after Grohl's performance at LiveEarth. No More, He kicked A$$! Total Rock Star

the only music fans who would dismiss the foo fighters are people who think pitchfork is the end-all, be-all. the foo's are one of the most exciting, entertaining bands out there.
Score = 2
Chris, I was even shocked that pitchfork ran an article on them today where they called Color and the Shape "excellent."
Funny, considering that Schreiber gave it a 3.4 way back in '97. Pitchfork? Inconsistent? Nah!
Score = 0
Really. I saw the Foos a couple of years ago with Weezer and they put on a great show - Dave has tons of energy and is genuine and funny, too.
Score = 2
Music Review Revisionism is as old as... music reviews. Rolling Stone famously gave Dark Side of the Moon awful reviews, then made it the best album of its decade in later rankings. Maybe it wasn't Dark Side of the Moon, but you get the idea... at least sometimes the reviewer admits s/he's wrong.
Score = 1
'Generator' FTW. And if you haven't heard Grohl's demo tapes, Google/Torrent 'em. People tend to forget he pretty much did the first Foos album all by his lonesome.
Score = 0
The only time I've ever seen The Foos live was when they went on the road with The Red Hot Chili Peppers for the Californication tour in Oklahoma City. I wasn't there to see Dave and co., but the band won me over as they played their asses of like there was no tomorrow. I wish I could say the same for the Chilis who seemed to be on autopilot that night.

My boss, a long time Police fan, went to their Los Angeles reunion show with the Foo Fighters last month. When he got back I asked how the concert was. "The Foo Fighters were AWESOME!" he said.
"And The Police?"
"Eh. They were okay."
Score = 0
They are the best true rock and roll band around anymore.
Here is a crappy quality video of 'Cheer Up Boys, Your Mascara Is Running' at some club in California.

wow.. that version of 'Everlong' is amazing
i forgot just how great that song is!!
Score = 0
Fuck the "haters," as they say. I'm not always interested in their material, but Dave and the Foos really freaking rock. I hope to see them live, someday. Everyone always says they're amazing, no matter who they are.
I'm sick of these Live Earth videos that cut off at the wrong time, though. Are uploaders retarded?

omg, "Ballad Of The Beaconsfield Miners"? Is this a joke? I can't and won't believe it.
For the uninitiated, last year in Australia two miners got stuck underground for a few days following a mine collapse, and while they were digging them out they requested an iPod with, among other bands, the foos on it.
Given the event was pretty dramatic, it was also one big ridiculous media clusterf*ck, sapping any dignity from the proceedings. I hope the fooies haven't just done the same with their latest ...
Score = 0
foo fighters are wearing a little thin.
anyone else agree?

Regarding the "Ballad Of The Beaconsfield Miners" thing. Dave Grohl was on Radio 1 in the UK talking about this the other day and he said he had met up with the guys months later, after promising them free tickets to any Foo's show they wanted, and got drunk with them after the show.
He told them he'd written a song about it, and promised them he was going to put it on the next album.
Never heard the song, but that's the background to it.
Max.
Score = 0
Foo's had been a favourite of mine up till their last two rather crap albums. They put on a solid show, but their setlists are very generic and heavy on the hits.
Score = 0
haha only one of the miners even came to daves show... the other said the foos are utter shite....
anyway... fag4k gave the first foos album a good rating..... around 7-8 ish?
so if u believe their shit then yeah they arent horrendous..
how can u dislike everlong gosh..
Score = 0
their music is a little caveman but dave is the sex. ungh!
Score = 0
Perhaps the Foo became under-rated after they released their umpteenth bland commercial rock radio anthem, but Grohl seems like a genuinely cool guy, and he will always be one of my favorite drummers of all time.
Score = 0
jules - you wrote: For the uninitiated, last year in Australia two miners got stuck underground for a few days following a mine collapse...
---
How about, closer to 2 weeks underground! A 'few days' in was the point where the rescue became incredibly intense - you make it sound like it was a Teddybear Picnic.
They almost died - for goodness sake, some respect wouldn't hurt...
Score = 0
Does anybody agree that PROBOT is some of Dave's coolest shit ever?? Read the liner notes... it was a real labor of love for him. He's a metalhead at heart. FF is kinda hit or miss sometimes, I'll check the new album, but a new Probot would be awesome!
Score = 0
I was taken to a Foo Fighters show in Toronto a couple years ago--LOVED it. (Thanks Lynn)

A classic case of the pot calling the kettle suck.
Neither FBR bands nor Foo make me want to change my religion or slit my wrists. But whatever level of mediocrity they are all churning out has grown out of the same foundations.
Sit down kids, let me tell you a story. It will take us all the way back to 1992.
Dave Grohl was in this band called Nirvana. This dude named Kurt Cobain wrote the songs. He was in love with this genre called punk rock. Yes, punk rock the same homophobic genre that disowned its gay half-brother, emo. Punk rock and emo are from the same fucked up family. I guess it only makes sense that their offspring would hate each other.
If Grohl wants to make fun of whatever crap those crazy kids are listening to these days, fine. But fratricide is never becoming.
Score = 0
Lauren, what the heck's your point? Nirvana was influenced by punk, so was FOB, and so ____? "Fratricide is never becoming"? Good for Dave for having a sense of humor. We have no idea what this song's gonna be but i think the "Make-Up" thing is telling: Because these new bands' fixation on fashion & their huge female fanbase goes to show they have alot more in common with 80s hair-metal cheesiness than old-school punk. (Wasnt there an article on here about that a month ago?)
Worlds away from the metal Dave grew up on (Motorhead, COC, Sepultura) and Kurt's influences (Pixies, Melvins) ... on the other hand, FOB/MCR/P!ATD were influenced by Blink 182 & Green Day, wear make-up & silly costumes, and play to stadiums of 13 year old girls. They're not bros, they're distant cousins three times removed.
Score = 0
'commercial rock radio anthem'
- you say that like it's a bad thing...
'hit and miss'
- yep, he churns out a lot of dross, but there are plenty of diamonds in there (mainly choruses) and as long as he plays these at the live shows...
and finally: You want to tell a story about 'punk rock' and you start it in 1992? Punk was plenty homosexual in 1976... The song title is both funny and good advice... and I say that as a mid-80s Smiths fan...
Score = 0
I did not say the story of punk began in 1992, but it would be pretty funny if I did.
Costumes? A dirty tshirt and jeans is a costume. Your work uniform is a costume.
You bring up twice the female fanbase thing as if it were a detrimental factor. That's some sexist stuff you got there. I guess if you are a dude, and women appreciate your art, than you are not producing quality? If you went to the next show of your favorite band, and it was mostly young ladies in the audience, would you be upset? Did it change the music or just your perception of yourself?
FOB and Panic were influenced by Blink and GD, but who influenced them?
My Chemical Romance is not affiliated with Fueled by Ramen records.

Hey now, lets not forget that it's SDRE STILL powering this rock n' roll train.
Dissappear is still one of my favorite songs. Ever.

@Volume Addict
I saw the same tour in Baltimore. Could not agree more. Foos were awesome, the Chili Peppers were lifeless and Anthony looked like he just wanted to go home.
Grohl is the man and one of the more talented mainstream musicians out there today. The Colour and the Shape is one of the most under-appreciated albums of the 90's.
Score = 0
As for the Foos churning out radio-hits. Like someone said thats a bad thing? I mean at least it is QUALITY radio stuff.
The last two albums I have been rather non-plussed about. One By One was a tad disappointing and I never really picked up In Your Honor, though I have friends who love it.
The Foo Fighters will always be "Colour" and "Nothing Left To Lose." NLTL is one of my favorite albums and a real departure for them. Very mellow, very low-key.
Yeah the Foos aren't exactly cerebral or "challenging." But at the same time you can't eat steak every night of your life, sometimes you want to kick back with a hot dog or a cheeseburger. that is what the Foos are, they are the comfort food of the rock world.
Score = 0
foo are one of the greatest big overshadowed bands ever. it's too bad this whole culture of being a music snob and only liking indie non-major label bands is kicking in - grohl has always been a great musician and foo's music & lyrics are still better than most bands around.
Score = 0
aren't the foos one of the most famous bands in the world?
Score = 0
Don't cry Lauren, (You're make-up is running)
Score = 0
I love them. Dave Grohl was brillant with Nirvana, and AWESOME with the foo's
Score = 0
Lauren, you're out of your element. This soulless, manufactured pop you deem emo is MILES AWAY (in sound, quality, and sincerity) from the emo Grohl witnessed and helped foster as the drummer (BEFORE NIRVANA) of DC's Scream.
Score = 0
Wow Foo Fighters underrated! they are so overrated it's not funny.
If it wasn't for Nirvana DG would be just another drummer in some indie band.
Score = 0
I really-really-really want to hear this (that is if you're being honest with us), because I love the Foo Fighters, and I love to hate Emos
Score = 0
I don't think the song is bashing post-hardcore music itself. After all, Dave and the band were influenced by it and basically practice it. I'm not comparing Foo Fighters to FOB, but the common threads are there. Dave was grew up around D.C., which is where the music that would become emocore was spawned. He's proclaimed his affinity for bands like rights of spring and another member of the band (I can't remember if it was Chris or Nate or a former member) was also a member of SDRE, so to say this song is lambasting everything post-hardcore is a generalization.
Score = 0
*Rites
I shouldn't make musical diatribes at 2:18. Anyway, the Foos are a great band by and measurement, and I'd say for sure an underestimated live band. Dave is a fine songwriter, and a lot of those songs are as good as a lot of Nirvana songs, speaking as a die-hard Nirvana fan.
Score = 0
Yeah, they would have to be the best mainstream rock band around today.
They don't do anything particularly adventurous, but they play decent, tasteful rock songs and churn out some classics (Best of You, Everlong for instance).
Score = 0

Mate, I think Jules was just reflecting a lot of people's attitudes to the way that incident was reported by the media in Australia. He wasn't going out of his way to be disrespectful.
Having reported on the incident myself, I totally agree with him. It was total fucking overkill.
I really don't want to hear a heart-wrenching ballad about it because every last ounce of emotion was wrung out and laboured over by the Australian media. I hope its just a tongue-in-cheek title.
All respect to the two guys either way.
Score = 0
The Foo Fighters are great. Just because their not "indie," or that Pitchfork or any other hipster, ironic, hype magazine drools over them doesn't mean their not genuine musicians. People get scared of enjoying a mainstream band nowadays because they think it'll affect their "musical taste."
Score = 0
the man has removed some of the videos

If making fun of emos was ever funny, the humour dried up years ago. "Cheer up"? Good one, what's next, a witty reference to the boys wearing make-up? Oho, my sides!
Score = 0
Foo Fighers - One from the coolest bands on the planet. I've been watching Dave Grohl and how the band's been growing together over the times past. He know's how to touch the spot without appearing pretentious but with raw emotion by the lyrics getting the point across. I know it was a while - but the video "Learn To Fly" touched down with its lyrics "coming home".
Good luck to Dave and the crew. I'll be catching up with (this latest) when it's released. *****

The Ballad for the Australian miners is an instramental.
"Wow Foo Fighters underrated! they are so overrated it's not funny.

If it wasn't for Nirvana Dave would still be a powerful force in rock today. Check out his demo tapes (Late!) that were recorded prior to Nevermind.
Score = 0
If Dave never woulda been in Nirvana you have to ask the same thing of Nirvana. They were both brilliant and needed each other. Did you see Dave on Unplugged with Nirvana? He was already a star. And the Foo Fighters are what you hope and wish your favorite underground indie band would become if they spurned hit after hit and got huge. They never strive for the "Biggest Band In The World" title nor do they make pretentious "concept" records and tell you how much they mean. Plus they remain cool as fuck.. An article on the new record on mtvnews Dave says Cheer Up Boys.. is not about emo at all. By the way. But what do i know, I thought the Toadies were very similar to Foo Fighters and what happened?
