Gnarls Barkley Cover Radiohead

thumbnail icon: Gnarls Barkley Cover Radiohead

There aren't many voices that can do justice to a Thom Yorke melody. (We saw a bunch of our favorite bands take on the OK Computer movements with OKX to varying results.) But it just so happens Gnarls Barkley have one of the better singers in the game. Gnarls have been covering In Rainbows' "Reckoner" in their live sets lately, and we finally found a YouTube clip -- from their set in San Diego three nights ago (right during Comic Con, no less) -- that does some audio and visual justice to Cee-Lo's take. Not even those introductory cigarette drags can get in the way.

Never has a tanktop contained so much soul. You already knew Gnarls gives good cover -- but when you have Cee-Lo you can do it even while playing it relatively straight. This one's fighting with the hearty "Who's Gonna Save My Soul?" video for Gnarls moment of the month. If you want more "Reckoner"s to choose from, here's one from Madrid, and another from last night at the Hollywood Bowl.

UPDATE: Here is much better video:

They should release this as a single in the way The White Stripes did the Tegan & Sara cover.

they need to record this in studio so we can appreciate it w/o drunk fans trying to replicate thom yorke / sing along with cee-lo.

I agree. Good version. However, one of my favorite parts of the song---the crazy beat on the ride cymbal isn't there. The drummer is just banging it uniformly.

too bad both Gnarls and Radiohead are playing a concert in another city the night the other plays Lollapalooza - would have been sick seeing them play this together on stage

You live in New York and you love music.

This Thursday 7/31 at 10pm Pale Nimbus plays Southpaw.

My name is Matt and I manage the band. I want you at the show.

If you come and don’t dig it, I will refund you the cover. Stay the entire set and if you still aren’t a fan, you can get your money from me: I’m easy to spot and the band will introduce me during the set.

This is a new Brooklyn based band. They are my favorite in NYC and there isn’t anyone like them in the world. I told you first.

With love,
Matt

I live in New York, and I dislike shit bands.

My name is Bane, and I think you’re a tool.

I wouldn’t have given a fuck about Pale Dingus anyway, or whatever they’re called. But now I give even less of a fuck, due to how you’re promoting them. Didn’t you pay attention in Ratfuck Band Management School?

Why don’t you pay me the cover anyway, or, better yet, buy yourself some friends.

I’m sure you wouldn’t be “managing” them if you didn’t think they were the greatest thing since frozen waffles, or maybe you’re just a tool? Oh, wait, we already covered that.

No love for you,
Bane

They played Reckoner at Roskilde earlier this month as well, and it was really cool. Then again, Radiohead had just played it much better the night before.

Band To Watch: Blank Dogs

Blank Dogs are actually singular: It's the insanely prolific one-man Brooklyn-based band of Mr. Blank Dog. We don't know too much about the biography of the guy behind the bedroom new-wave pop/punk and he's usually covering his face with masks...

Quit Your Day Job: Megafaun

Raleigh-via-Eau Clair BTW Megafaun debuted impressively earlier this year with Bury The Square. The trio nip-and-tuck experimental tendencies (tape splicing, white noise colliding with banjo, junkyard-laced spring reverb, screeching feedback at the tail end of a quiet back porch lament)...
