Grizzly Bear Do "Cheerleader" For Fallon
Ahem. From Trent Reznor to Billboard to Bonnaroo to Letterman (almost!) to Toronto, Grizzly Bear are just about everywhere these days. Until Friday, they'd never been to Jimmy Fallon. For their debut they conjured up a beautiful take on Veckatimest standout "Cheerleader." You might've caught the song live on Spinner, but there was something more urgent and soulful about this Late Night take, the nostalgic melodies eerier now that Spector's locked up. (Note: The clip also features Cameron Diaz in bunny ears.)
Veckatimest is out via Warp.

LNwJF should just be one long musical guest performance. The show is so terrible but the sound is just so out-of-hand amazing.
Score = 11
With his time slot and audience, Fallon might as well just do one long musical guest performance. He'll never come close to touching Conan's coat tails, so let good musicians that the old folks watching Letterman don't have the ears for come on and play. You can talk to them for a bit too, get them in on the gags.
Indie could use their own version of Headbanger's Ball, but just not completely sucky,

What is up with the bass player, what a horrible hipster he is. I wonder who is his stylist. Showing off his ugly chest hair on national television, pretentious.
Score = -46
he has to show off his stupid hister tattoo
Score = -15
have you ever considered that his tattoo may actually have a deep and meaningful significance to him?
Score = -3
Dude's in a professional rock band - it's kind of his job to look like that.

The bass player looks like Cro-Magnon Neil Patrick Harris.
Score = 7
his name is chris taylor, and he is far more than their bass player.
but yea, he and dan look like they just wrestled a grizzly bear. maybe that's the joke.
Score = 1
Chris Taylor has no chest hair, wtf are you talking about? It is stupid, and no one should even be talking about it, but it has been mentioned like 5 times already. If there is anything weird, it is that he obviously goes to get laser hair removal treatments or something. I just don't understand why you are saying it looks like he wrestles a grizzly bear if he has no visible hair on his body. Am I watching a different video, seeing different publicity pics, etc? Where is this Cro-Magnon bass player? The one I always see looks more like a pre-pubescent girl.

they are the WORST.

I think you've misspelled 'BEST'.

I had a feeling this was going to be good before I pressed play - I had no idea it was going to be THAT good.

It's nice to see the crew go all out for a little band from Brooklyn...it's not too late TV...the numbers may say the Jonas Brothers on SNL is a good idea but I assure you it isn't...

Great song! Great performance! I just wish they would have said, "Michael we love u, come back baby!" Since this was they day after he died.

These kids look and sound great. Good music for good people.

That seriously blew me away. This why I think "Veckimest" is way better than "Bitte Orca". :|

So glad they decided to play Cheerleader! Definitely my favorite from the album I think, though that's hard to choose. A great performance of it, that's for sure. Long live Grizzly Bear!
Score = 8
Really, really, really good. But poor Daniel Rossen got like a millisecond of airtime.
Score = 7
I can't understand why this song is one of their singles. I like the album a lot, but I think this is one of there worst songs on it.

Hey writer: "the nostalgic melodies eerier now that Spector's locked up."
It should be "melody's" since grammatically you are not speaking of the plural. Also, have you actually listened to any Phil Spector productions? Because your comparison is just plain wrong.

I like how any tattoo is considered hipster these days. have you ever thought that it might have significant meaning to him? not everyone gets a tattoo because they feel it's "cool".

This sounds so much better live. Also agree with whoever said Fallon should just do an hour worth of music performances and musician interviews.

the best band ever, the best performance from late night tv I've seen in a good time.
Since the strokes actually. Giving it their all. ACE

I think the Phil Spector comparison isn't out of place at all. Listen to a Ronettes song or some of his mid 60's stuff, those eery vocals, the reverby "wall of sound" (hard to describe otherwise; you kind of know it when you hear it.) i think the Grizzly Bear haters need there own forum. Can't we just like this band in peace. This happens every g-d damn time GB gets some love. I mean seriously can't you guys pick on Shins fans or like throw eggs at JoBro fans. Let's agree to disagree about this band. It's a big enough world; there is more objectionable music out there.

Pangea, you are talking engineering, not melody. The writer's quote was "the nostalgic melodies [sic] eerier now that Spector's locked up." There is nothing reminiscent about Spector's songwriting or his production in the melody of this song. Additionally, he didn't make "eery" songs. Just because reverb is used? "Wall of Sound" isn't just tank reverb and it isn't eery.
I'm not hating on Grizzly Bear; I liked the song and the performance. I'm hating on lazy writing and poor musical comparisons.

You are an idiot! The melody to this song was clearly inspired by Goffin/king/ spector..
It sounds exactly like the melodies they used to right... The arrangement is Spector influenced as well...
And spector made very eerie songs.. And this song is eerie as well..
I think you just aren't well versed in the music of Phil Spector. You should go listen to some, then apologize to the writer...

"It sounds exactly like the melodies they used to right"
Great. Another Ivy Leaguer here.
Hmmm. Went back and listened to my Spector box set and collection of vintage 45's. Can you maybe point me to some melodies (pl)? You mention Goffin/King/Spector collaborations. "Every Breath I Take", "Just Once In My Life", "Is This What I Get For Loving You", "Long Way To Be Happy"? Or other Spector songs like "Spanish Harlem", "Da Doo Run Run", "River Deep - Mountain High", "Be My Baby"?
I guess you meant "He Hit Me (It Felt Like A Kiss)" since that is the only song you guys know because Grizzly Bear already covered it like a Mavericks or Chris Isaak song? So "Cheerleader" sounds a lot like their cover version of "He Hit Me", the bridge has a bit of a "Be My Baby" backbeat, there is a bunch of reverb, and more than a hint of Roy Orbison (who didn't work with Spector)? I guess I'm completely wrong. This is totally like Phil Spector's body of work.
