Grizzly Bear Make Their UK TV Debut On Jools Holland

thumbnail icon: Grizzly Bear Make Their UK TV Debut On Jools Holland

Grizzly Bear finally broke the telly-glass ceiling last night. Via Ed's Twitter account of the evening, we know one song went live, with two more recorded for Friday's extended show. First up is "Two Weeks," which is a good choice for a first impression. Welcome to Veckatimest, The UK.

UPDATE: And here's "While You Wait For The Others."

Veckatimest is an album. That isn't even out yet. The band is set for a return to Letterman on May 20th.

Wow. There are some serious pitch problems in the vocals. Is this what passes for "harmonizing" these days? No wonder y'all like the Vivian Girls, too.

Wow, John, you need to go back to harmony school. That was absolute perfection. Timeless.

*obligatory post to talk about pitch problems by people who haven't listened to any live Beach Boys, Four Freshmen, Blind Boys of Alabama or Temptations tracks in a while to understand that even the best groups have off days and even when they have off days it still makes for a good performance so maybe it's not the end of the world*

While I'm not insanely partial to a great deal of the Grizzly catalog, this will probably be my favorite song of the year.

I couldn't agree more. Not all of their songs are appealing to me but this one is just amazing

I think it's pretty clear they were just very nervous. It ended up sabotaging the whole performance really. Chris Taylor's vocals were off, and he comes in a measure early later in the song. It's alright, they're almost always far better than this, just a case of the nerves in this environment.

Listened to plenty of Beach Boys and Temptations live in my day, and it's laughable that indiedom feels it necessary to compare Grizzly Bear, a band with a couple of memorable songs, to these groups. This was a mediocre performance by a thoroughly average band!

Fuck you and your Petsounds. The Beach Boys were just the Monkeys with schizophrenia -- stealing from The Beatles like every other band from that era.

On that note, thought the song was good, but not so hot on Grizzly Bear.

I thought the performance was pretty okay, but I do love that guys drumming. For a band that's supposedly lush, it was pretty minimal, and maybe not in a way that served the song very well. Is it okay to think Grizzly Bear's kinda okay?

it was hardly all that off, you guys are freaking out over some really minor issues. And yes Chris is the best drummer in Indie Rock. Anyone else notice they switched to a less prominent w sound in the oh harmonies then they used to do?

The people complaining came here specifically to complain regardless of the song or performance. Actually this is a much better sounding performance to the Letterman one and was really quite good for live TV. It's funny how every band has a good 10 trolls that need to leave negative comments on blogs all the time. Dirty Projectors. TVOTR. Hold Steady, Animal Collective (yes even they have quite a few haters) and now Grizzly Bear.

Can't please everyone. Especially the whiny bitches

I very much enjoyed the camera angels and each person got a little spotlight, especially Chris Bear--he does not deserve to be unnoticed, but is definitely the most overlooked musically in the group. hopefully this will change! love them. looks like they had the jitters, but who wouldn't when you're on live television? they are still wonderful and there have other live performances which have been absolutely phenomenal of Two Weeks, so I'm not that worried about this.

I'll give them their due it was a good performance and the guy has a good voice. But all these new bands sound like prog rock. Is it 1974 again? Who'd have thought it would make a comeback? I know some Emerson, Lake, and Palmer records you guys would dig.

I've observed several posts where a band is judged on one performance. I know quick disposal is the "it" thing for the web but Grizzly Bear are here to stay. This isn't a case of a stylized hype band that is on the cover of NME and washing dishes the next day.

Victoria Legrand of Beach House is the high oohs in the studio song, so this is quite impressive that Chris Taylor does the vocals so well. Can't wait to see their energy live at the Fillmore ("one of my favorite venues ever" - Chris Walla)

Who is the fifth guy off to the left during "two weeks"?
What is that touch-pad like thing Ed moved his finger across at the end of "two weeks"?
Comment: Overall pretty good, under the circumstances. I guess British TV is more nerve wracking then other venues, but there was definitely a brown note played at 3:47 by Mr. Taylor. To my ears it sounded like a foible, but it gave the set some character. I enjoyed the live-wire slickness/rawness of this.

I have something similar to what he is using on Two Weeks called a "Q Chord" but it looks like the "Omnichord" is a similar device. It is fun to use and I am surprised that more bands do not utilize it.
