Hives Admit Other Bands Exist

Late last week, we were wondering what ever happened to the Hives. Then we realized they weren't very good, were they? So who cares.

However, we do like hearing contemporary cover songs, so thanks to all the readers who sent us a link to the band's live medley on Swedish TV Friday night. Here's what you'll hear in the video clip:

1. List of Demands (Saul Williams)
2. Hey Ya! (Outkast)
3. Two Theives (Compulsive Gamblers)
4. Gotta Get Some Action Now! (Hellacopters)
5. Stay Fly (Three 6 Mafia)
6. Seven Nation Army (White Stripes)
7. Hate To Say I Told You So (The Hives)

That Outkast cover is atrocious. And why do Swedes like Saul Williams so much?

Oh, wow. I would have never guessed that Three 6 Mafia cover could sound worse than the original, but the Hives pulled it off.

I wonder if the "Hey Ya!" cover is the Hives' way of coming full circle after Andre 3000 recently admitted a Hives show inspired him to write the song.

The Hives have my eternal respect for their appearance on Regis and Kelly back a couple of years ago (which I tragically can't find online anywhere). They presented Regis with a jacket that said "Tyrannosaurus Rage." It was awesome.

Sure, they were just a Stooges ripoff, but they weren't bad at it.

Yeah, I still enjoy a little bit of Hives every now and then... but this performance surely isn't their best. America Loves/Loved/Kinda liked the Hives!

That being said, that performace was kind of crappy, until they finally do their own tune.

The Hives still put on one of the best shows I've ever been to.

ps I liked Saul Williams better when he was a little slam poet in NYC, those were the days, and now I feel old...

I've never had the pleasure of seeing The Hives in a small venue, but even from halfway back in a big, cavernous arena, they were absolutely phenomenal.

The Hives always said they were the "punk rock" version of the backstreet boys. Take them for what they are... Entertainers. Still, that freeze move is pure theater.

anyone who has seen the hives live know that they rock...

i hate when blogs and magazines try to stay on top of "being cool" by turning on bands or trends that they once promoted.

The Hives put on the best live show I've ever seen, hands down. It's about time they put out a new album...

This on the other hand was just OK but it was great to see something new from them.

i haven't seen the Hives live but i did see them on Letterman a few years ago and the lead singer just had this amazing stage presence.

Good band.

I'm independently agreeing with the masses - I'm not feeling Stereogum not liking the Hives. I'm willing to forgive if you meant to say that The Vines suck.

One of the best live bands in existence today. (The Hives, that is.)

I don't disagree with Stereogum re: The Hives not being that great, but I surely wish you dudes would revert back to putting your names with the posts. I can usually tell (I think). However, this post smells like Scott, but has a hint of Amrit. So I'm torn. Because not knowing makes you guys seem like the faceless corporation that you're undoubtedly going to become someday, rather than the cool guys we know you are.

Really depends on how you define "good". Sure, they're not that great from a purely musical standpoint and Tyrannosaurus Hives was some weak sauce.

But like other commenters said, Pelle has fantastic stage presence and that Bowery Ballroom show that Andre talks about will always be one of my favoritest live shows, ever.

Wow, you sure misjudged the popular response to the Hives, didn't ya?

I love the Hives. The covers in that video are bordering on atrocious, though. They're still a great, fun band. And (if anyone has any sense) it's obvious that they're only there to be a fun band. Good stuff.

the hives are amazing, possibly one of the best bands to come out of the MTV-driven garage rock revival of the earlier part of this millenium. They can write pointless songs and sing and play them with such emotion that it doesn't matter. They are fantastic. I will not let stereogum salt the reputation of the hives. I haven't watched this video, but I don't doubt that the covers aren't very good because most covers aren't very good.

I saw the hives on mtv 2's $2 tour, on tv not live, years ago, and it was good, even though there was a lot of Jagger aping on the part of the lead singer though.

personally i agree with most here - i love the hives. they record live to two track in one room at the same time, and most bands can't do that - hence the live feel to their records. they tend to be really tight, really awesome.

all that being said, this performance is god awful. i just hope some marketing idiot at their label made them do it. live they are wonderful monsters but this is not that by a long shot.

The Hives gots what it takes. The TRex LP was fine, but a little too tightly wound. Having seen them live twice over the last few tours, they certainly need to shake that "You Love the Hives!" stuff...
that gets a little too cringey-icky...
