I'm Not There: Cate Blanchett As Bob Dylan

A short bit from Todd Haynes' Dylan movie I'm Not There has leaked online. The film, which features seven (six?) actors playing Bob -- Christian Bale, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Ben Whishaw, and Cate Blanchett -- is due in theaters in September (in time for the Ronson remix!). This clip imagines Cate's Bob meeting Allen Ginsberg (David Cross) for the first time, circa 1966. (Thanks ScriptGirl for the tip.)

After the jump, Dylan and Ginsberg together for reals, visiting Jack Kerouac's grave. Twenty years later, but their hair's the same.

Big fan of Bob, Ginsberg, and David Cross, but this shit looks like a lame Mr. Show skit that got cut.

Yeah, much prefer the second clip.

Man, I hope that movie is better than what the first clip implies.

I . . . oh, my. Perry's got me cracking up thinking this is a secret Mr. Show gig.

You said seven actors, then named only six. What's the deal?

David Cross is an inspired piece of casting. I've always thought he was reminiscent of the young Ginsberg, at least in the face. Blanchett also manages to get the general feel of Dylan down, but yeah, the movie still doesn't look very good. Sort of interesting idea, though.

What was the second clip from? The footage was from much earlier than the song.

Ugh, awkward awkward casting. Somebody needs to tell directors to stop casting David Cross in serious roles, the whole time it just seems like he's barely keeping a straight face.

@ Sean:

I guess it's six actors. Hmm. I kept hearing seven, but IMDB lists six.

Worst of all: they took a song from Fellini's film! If you can't come up with an original song for a movie, you just don't steal it from another one...

The second clip was from Dylan's "Renaldo and Clara" shit bomb.

I'm in the minority, I think the Haynes movie looks pretty good.

i like the semi-obscure reference at the end of the clip to the basement tapes (the REAL basement tapes) "see you later Allen Ginsburg..."

What the fuck? Dylan met Ginsberg way before 1966. What is this?

That's true. Ginsberg first met Dylan in 1963. Also, Ginsberg was in a rickshaw being pulled by Gregory Corso at the time of meeting, and not in a golf cart as the film portrays.

I personally can't wait to see the footage of Christian Bale as Dylan.

Pretty sure there are seven Dylans, but only six actors. Christian Bale plays him twice.

Retarded indeed. The 2nd clip is from '75, not 20 years later as the caption reads. Before production started, Bob gave Haynes his blessings. I wonder if he would take them back if he could after seeing this.

Except for Dont Look Back, Dylan really doesn't have a great track record with film related projects. Hearts of Fire, anyone? Masked and Anonymous? If this movie is crap, I don't think he will be fazed. Anyway, this movie is going to be good, or at least interesting to watch (for the Dylan fan anyway).

the second clip is from "Renaldo & Clara," except for the music of course. The audio in Renaldo & Clara would trip you out...

Only a movie about Mr. Dylan would have 7 people playing the main role. I don't know if this movie will be good; but I'm sure it will have many nuggets for true Dylan fans. Bob just keeps on giving and giving. One of the most creative people of this century. GOD BLESS Bob Dylan!!!!

I'm really excited to see this movie. Haynes is interesting and there is a great concept using talented actors. I think Cate is a good move and I think she'll do a great job. I love Dylan so I'm either going to love or hate this film.

However, I think I'm just as curious to hear the soundtrack. Eddie Vedder, Sonic Youth, Sufjan Stevens , Yo La Tengo, Jeff Tweedy, and John Doe are all doing Dylan covers! That's insane. I'm really curious to hear it come the 30th of October. Has anyone heard the soundtrack?
