Indie Rock In Memoriam 2008

thumbnail icon: Indie Rock In Memoriam 2008

While there were a lot of great new bands that came on our radar this year, we also said goodbye to some favorites. Sorry to end the week on a bummer, but it's time to pay our respects to the departed with an "In Memoriam" tribute video. Hopefully you've been paying attention to MySpace bulletins over the past twelve months as we hate to be the bearer of bad news. On the bright side, some of these acts will get back together in twenty years, presumably having skipped the drug overdoses and declarations of bankruptcy that precede reunions in Behind The Music.

Also R.I.P. Harp, No Depression, TRL, Paper Thin Walls, Muxtape, Shea Stadium. You will be missed. Well, TRL not so much.

Now all we have to do is pray against a Velvet Revolver resurrection.

One really underrated and underappreciated band that broke up this year is Philly's The Teeth. Honestly, one of the best live acts I've ever seen.

You're My Lover Now is one of the most underappreciated and best albums of the last 5 years.I will miss the Teeth dearly. It kills me that they broke up right as they were at the cusp of getting some long deserved recognition. I still spread the word everywhere I go.

The Purples are just not the same. :(

WHERE'S THE LOVE PHOR PHANTOM PLANET??!!1! I mean, you guys totally had that song in there for a reason, right?

Srsly, though, I'm pretty sad to see BYOP gone.

Yeah I'm actually sad about Phantom Planet. That one song that put them on the map (something about "Always Up to No Good" or something) was a brilliant song. Too bad it went all downhill from there (including the O.C. theme-- decent song, just hated the show).

3 big bands missing here i think.

1. Wolfmother
2. The Format
3. The Servant

3 bands i will miss more than any listed in that video, all bit the dust this year.

What about Wolfmother? And I agree with Alex, the Teeth were way underrated. I'm pretty sorry to see them and byoP go. I was also told recently that the Pipettes broke up...or are switching out members, erm, I think they're doing a Menudo kind of thing.

I updated the video to include The Format and Wolfmother! Forgot those.

I think UNKLE officially disbanded this year too but then they got back together.

Wolfmother and The Format are both in that video. What are you guys even talking about?! I had to sigh three times today. Thanks a lot stereogum commenters.

Not too sad to see BYOP go. They were a great band, but one more album and that whole "i'm a teeny bopping naive PUNK ROCKER GRAAWWWWWW" shtick would have just become annoying.

I'll miss The Long Blondes a bit though.

I'm not really sad about any of those bands breaking up, I hate to say. None of them were that great to begin with. But loved the award show type presentation, complete with applause (nice touch). Still if that's all we lost this year in terms of bands, then it was a pretty good year.

Hmm, I am totally indifferent to most of those bands leaving, and glad to see a few go. Possible exceptions: Phantom Planet and The Format, though I haven't listened to much by either of them....

But wow, glad no one's gonna cream themselves over anymore of Wolfmother's throwback buttrock.

Wolfmother didn't 'break up' - the other two guys just got pushed out of the band by Andrew Stockfro's massive ego--er, hair. C'mon, what's more important - a rhythm section or styling gel? That's rhetorical, obv.

Sad to see Dirty On Purpose on the headstone there, but I agree with Mark there - if these are the biggest losses, we kept the best stuff going.

95% of "indie rock" = special of day- artists not serious, and bloggers like to be fashionable- nothing about music really- more like early 20's bunny-hop. It's a ntaural state of mind for most- some stick with it - most move on to classic rock.

wolfmother are only indie if you don't live in australia. and they broke up because the singer was pissed everyone left them for the presets at splendour. whose naked moshpit was amazing, by the way.

I feel sorry for the cool kids who wrote off Phantom Planet because of the "California" notoriety. Their latest album was a solid summer pop staple on my roadtrip along the eastern seaboard.

These guys made some solid records.

I didn't know Phantom Planet was breaking up, either. But all reports on the internet claim they are just going on a hiatus and not actually breaking up. Which is good, or at least slightly better.

What, no respect for Bauhaus? One of the all time greatest and most influential bands? I know they've broken up before, but still, I'm sure there are far less people grieving over the loss of Phantom Planet.
