Jack Black & Mos Def's Be Kind Rewind Trailer

Amazing what a name can do. Musical thespians Mos Def and Jack Black team up for Be Kind Rewind, and through ten-fifteen seconds, it looks like direct-to-DVD fare. Until Michel Gondry's name pops up, at which point you have two choices: pour one out for his career and reputation, or sit through the end and figure that mad genius has gotta have a secret masterplan/twist for this flick in that eternally spotless mind of his. But it don't look too promising.

I'm sorry, are you saying this movie doesn't look awesome? Because, for a moment, it looked like you were.

how could you say it looks bad? the premise is phenomenal...jack black and mos def have to remake a bunch of movie classics, including the ghostbusters, rush hour 2, 2001: a space odessy, boyz in the hood, and more...its going to be awesome. science of sleep was interesting, in the least, solely because of michele gondry, and this plot seems much more entertaining and appealing

I think this movie had 'terrific' written all over it. Gondry has yet to let me down.

"But it don't look too promising"? I have to disagree with you there...looks far more promising than most of what hits theaters every other week these days.

I think it looks funny. But then, I don't devote a lot of time trying to be Mr. Hipster.

Pffft. Are y'all serious or just trying to get everyone's dander up on what will likely be a slow news day?

I cant take Mos Def serious in anything. Hitchikers guide to the galaxy had major potential and then mos def just laid a major turd on it. and dont get me started on the worst movie of 2006 16 blocks staring mos def. yesh.

I agree that the beginning of the trailer makes it seem like a crappy movie but once i say Gondry's name and the actual premise of the movie i got excited.

i really, really want this to be excellent. something about mos and jack's banter up front scared me -- but it is michel, so fingers crossed! regardless, looks like they'll have a good opening day ;)

Science of sleep was a look at the running narrative inside every me-absorbed art-failure emo indie kid's head. This looks good too.

it's official - indie hipsters have little to no sense of humour! even a blind person could tell that this movie is going to be awesome!

Why does everyone posting comments assume people who disagree with them are aloof hipsters?

I am a positive shipwreck of unhipness and i think it looks ropey.

hopefully not.

but it looks ropey.

Jack Black is unbearable.

Why exactly do they have to re-make the movies? It must cost just as much to make them as it would to buy a DVD of the movie.

i think it looks like everyone involved had tons of fun, but that trailer also looks like they married a great premise to some tired story arc ("i'm the weasely representative for Big Evil, and we are going to shut you down/turn your playground into a parking lot/cheat to win, fun happy guy!"). i hope it's just how they cut the trailer, but who needs to see Bad News Blockbusters?

note: i like really un-hip movies.

Only thing that sucks about this movie is that Universal wouldn't let them do Back to the Future as one of the movies...but they did Ghostbusters instead, which is a pretty damn good replacement.

You gotta be kidding me. I've been excited about this one since it was announced after Gondry finished "Science of Sleep." Not only is the story perfect for Gondry to work some of his lo-fi special effects magic, it's simple enough to entice people to go see it who wouldn't otherwise see a movie by Gondry.

I may be exposing myself here, but DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THIS FROM AMANDA BYNES' SHOW ON NICKELODEON?

I swear the premise for this movie was a recurring sketch on "The Amanda Show."

I gotta agree with the original post. Last time I checked, the funniest scenes of comedies are in trailers- I did not laugh once during the two times I watched this. I agree that there is potential for laughs in low budget remakes of Ghostbusters, Robocop, etc, etc, etc., but this looks like a major league waste of a great premise.

looks funny to me, goofy and johnny good times all around. then again, i didn't like eternal sunshine and loved science of sleep so i figure gondry has a 50/50 shot at success. i did the math.

The first few bits of dialogue WERE kind of lame, in a "tell, don't show" kind of way, but the rest of it looks great.

Michel Gondry? Mos Def? Jack Black?
(Those are rhetorical questions, btw)

That being said, Michael from LA is right: why don't they just get a DVD replacement instead of going through all that trouble? Hell, I'd watch that movie, again and again, paying full price each time. Talk about drama. Yowp!

Ha, Stereogum ain't that hip -- there's a link to the new James Blunt vid after all... (are you fuckers high or depraved or both?). If Blunt is everything wrong in mainstream entertainment, then Gondry is the glimmer of hope for it.

This film looks like great fun.

internet gangsta...throwing whatever 'cred' i had out of the window, but i know which skit you're referring to. it's the one of an annoying family that owned a movie rental and would make these really bad imitations of hit movies. Wiki tells me it's Blockblister - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Amanda_Show i never found that skit very funny though.

and i want to like this cos its Gondry and Mos Def and Jack Black are usually sure-fires for me, but i gotta agree, it doesn't seem that funny.

do we have to be all "critical-y-ish " ? Seems original, unlikely, inventive and funny to me. but i love gondry's other stuff including the music videos that he's directed for awesome artists... so i'm a little biased. if it sucks it'll hurt to admit it.
