That's put me right off DL'ing his new movie.
Or going to see it.
Score = 0
Wow - what a douche.
Score = 0
Uh. Great comedy is played straight. But this was almost too straight, the line between satire and sincerity was hard to detect. Or it just wasn't very funny.
I don't have high hopes for the Tenacious D movie. (And for the record, I am a Jack Black fan.)
Score = 0
I thought it was funny for about five seconds.. then iI realized that Jack Black is just a shill for the industry. Hey Hollywood, quit turning out crap like the Tenacious D movie, then maybe I will come back to the theater.
Score = 0
if i pirate krunk music, will they cease getting inspiration and stop making that garbage?
hmm...
Score = 0
Jack Black was funny once? Must've missed that.
Score = 0
sorry about that extra comma.
my bad.
Score = 0
Sarcasm people, HELLO?! Sarcasm knocking here, answer the fucking door. Oh that's right, I forget from time to time that Pitchfork, I mean .. Stereogum readers are a bunch of robots. I'm hoping that one fleshy being may catch Jacks relaxed sarcarsm.
Score = 0
Sarcasm aside, it still isn't funny. Jack Black is a douche anyways.... the only time he was ever funny was in High Fidelity, and only for parts of that. Oh, and when he kicked baxter off the bridge.
Score = 0
this wasn't that bad... this is just basic tenacious D humor. i don't see why people diss things that they don't like because you'll already be against it. and jacks being sarcastic so calm down, and don't worry there'll still be a new Shins album.
Score = 0
for the record, nacho libre was an exceptional film. and the soundtrack was the greatest since the life aquatic's.
a new tenacious d movie, though? fuck that.
long john silver signing out.
Score = 0
Um, Jeepers Creepers Semistar? Helllllooooo?
But yeah, not funny since then.
Score = 0
i disagree dead_red_eyes...i think that jack black is a total industry shill, and that the irony in the psa is the same irony that pervades pop culture in general. the message in the psa is pretty clear..."piracy is wrong." fuck jack black. the argument that piracy stifles creativity is ridiculous (see: girl talk, hip-hop in general, wm burroughs, brion gysin, the dada movement, etc). i think that most of us support the bands we love by buying their merch; however, i seriously could care less if fucking metallica go broke over kids downloading music. digital rights in 07!
Score = 0
Yeah, Cory Doctorow on Boing Boing called it a "hilarious send-up", but he's a very charitable man.
Score = 0
Is it okay if I buy the decent stuff I download? because then I'm funding the good music :)
Score = 0
YARRRRRRRRR!
Score = 0
Why is it that you people can't just admit that piracy IS stealing? I know it is. I do it anyway, but I know it is. I thought this was pretty good honestly.
Score = 0
Jack Black was pretty awesome in Orange County.
School of Rock was his tipping point.
Since then it seems like he lost his edge, unfortunately, and become one of "them."
Score = 0
High Fidelity - Great
School of Rock & Nacho Libe - Super good family comedies.
Tenacious D - Pretty good sometimes
Jeepers Creepers Semistar - Yes!!
The Joke: The Musical - Perfection
Stereogum readers - A little whiny sometimes
Score = 0
anyone have the link to the new shins album? i heard some guy posted it on facebook. but that could possibly be horse dooey.
Score = 0
I don't blame Jack Black for sticking up for musicians. In what way is the Shins "the industry". That word's a leftover, and anyone who begrudges a musician a working wage is an idiot.
Score = 0
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA... that was funny. they steal all our internets.. i dont know how they do it.
Score = 0
i agree with d. if you were downloading nickelback, the word industry would apply. these kids are downloading xiu xiu and girl talk albums. fucking criminials and it's disgusting. you think it's free to travel to your town to be nothing but your persoonal t-shirt vendor, mr. "i buy merch"?
Score = 0
And how the fuck can that be taken as anything but satire or sarcasm??? Come on people, are you really that dense? You don't have to find it funny, but anybody who took that seriously really needs to simmer down.
Score = 0
This "stifles creativity" debate is interesting. Take a band like the Go Team or Girl Talk. They may thrive creatively off piracy, but that doesn't make it possible for theme to make a living off their work. Chances are those guys will be victims of the same shit.
By the way, sampling and downloading are worlds apart. One is a form of production, and the other consumption. Totally different.
Score = 0
wrong, paul h. anyone who didn't take it seriously owes themselves a serious moral inventory.
Score = 0
Fuck all his lame ass Hollywood movies! Tenacious D and his appearances on Mr Show are all that matter! He STILL is funny and that little PSA is what we call "irony." Its clearly obvious. He was asked to do it, so he did, with sarcasm. Fuck you all, Jack Black rules! I'm downloading Pick Of Destiny's soundtrack right now!
Score = 0
Considering it's a teaser for the Tenacious D movie, I don't see how one could view this as a straight PSA.
Score = 0
you guys are fucking boring.
"jack black is a douche" while you cry on your keyboards.
Score = 0
Cassette tape copying was supposed to kill the music business. Radio was supposed to kill the music business. Piracy is killing the music business? I don't know about that.
But the thought of no rocket sauce does kinda make me a little uneasy.
Score = 0
Hahaha you guys are funny. Arrr, matey.

Jack Black was good in one movie. Cable Guy. Don't knock him because he is making money. I don't give a fuck if he is an industry whatever.... This movie might blow. Get over it. It might rock, it might not. Never saw Nachos Liberation. Funny how The D was hot when playing 500 people arenas and now are kind of ghey when selling out for thousands. Sometimes people only give a shit when it's not popular to do so.
Score = 0
downloading music and movies stimulates the economy. without this action, fbi and riaa morans wouldn't have anything to persecute.
bling.
Score = 0
anyone who says Jack Black isn't funny doesn't know what they're talking about. You must not have seen the D's TV show on HBO(Complete Masterworks).
Score = 0
you people take him seriously? this is completely deadpan. jesus christ, have some humor and stop crying.
Score = 0
somebody probably already said it, but no. i don't remember when he was funny.
Score = 0
He was being sarcastic, Jack Black is funny and piracy rocks.
Score = 0
He was being sarcastic, Jack Black is funny, piracy rocks and you guys are douchebags.

tickets to see the D are 45 bucks here in LA.
id pay no more than 18.

since then he's been kinda corny

you are all a bunch of filthy, depressing hipsters, go back to arklahoma
Score = 0
i cant tell if the video is serious or not. i dont vouch for it or anything.
regardless, this thread is extremely whiny, and another case of readers of this site feeling they're too cool to like someone once they become popular.
Score = 0
"i seriously could care less if fucking metallica go broke over kids downloading music. digital rights in 07!"
one of the weakest statements i've heard in a while.
look bud, no one cares about lars ulrich anymore, period. but there's a huge difference between "digital rights" and piracy. you have no "rights" if you fucking "DL" something off torrentspy. but If you legally purchased a copy, that's a different story.
I'm no saint, I download - moderately. iTunes also takes a good chunk of money from me, as well as record stores and movie theatres....not to mention all the concert tickets.
i'm not saying this necessarily justifies what i download, but there's a difference between downloading a few things because you think you may be interested in it, and just downloading and sharing shit for the fuck of it.
And what's with all the hating on the D?? i've seen them live and when i left my face hurt because i was laughing so fucking hard.
YOU TRY CREATING SOMETHING YOU FUCKING NAY SAYERS!
Score = 0
That was funny.
He was talking about rocket sauce and 'internets' and some people took that serious?
Score = 0
So, stereogum hearts John Mayer, but thinks Jack Black is over? That's fucking twisted.
Score = 0
Downloading is stealing, yes. But stealing from whom? Mostly the labels, the disributors, and the studios who are taking all of the money. Stealing from some poor, talented indy rockers is a pretty fucking lame thing to do, but we're in a dilemma- as long as artisis are making only a few pennies off a record, the system is broken. Managers and labels are stealing MUCH MORE from the artists and doing MUCH MORE damage to the industry than pirates. Give me a working system, where artists get the money they should; where there aren't hundred-millionaires from overproduced pop schlock, but smaller bands can actually eek out a somewhat decent living with a smaller fanbase and a bigger cut.
Give me a way to buy music that I can use on mixes and give to my friends, and I will pay full price. Charge me $10 to download an album I can't share and can't play freely, and for which the artists are getting screwed, and I am going to steal.

hassan,
"you are all a bunch of filthy, depressing hipsters, go back to arklahoma"?!?
i'm throwing the bird your direction. all the way from arkansas.
Score = 0
You guys are mindless sheep. This video is a fing joke. The message is not piracy is bad. Its dont be a douche. They could give two shits about piracy. For all of you who dont get tenacious d comedy, dont comment. For that, you're being a douche. the more you know.
Score = 0
Ummm, This is from the band's website, with a bunch of other Spoofs. SPOOFS.
Score = 0
Spoof aside, the argument about piracy is a valid one.
Pninny, I agree with you to an extent, but how are you affecting a change within the industry you loathe? Or for that matter, how is anyone here doing anything about "high ticket prices" and "the industry" fucking you over.
How about this, everyone: instead of whining on a hipster blog try DOING SOMETHING about it that goes beyond "I'm downloading this instead of buying it, yeah, fuck the system!" Real rebellious. That level of conviction is like having a Livestrong bracelet and saying you're fighting cancer.
At the end of the day, if no one buys an indie record, sure the labels get hurt more than the artists, but the artists don't make any money either. Bootleg live shows until the sky falls, test out music before you buy it, but if you enjoy a record, BUY IT. Bitches.
Score = 0
Did I miss something? This is an advertisment right? Not a PSA. "Super-mega rock'n roll stars are just regular dudes." This line clued anyone with a sense of humor into the fact this is a promo. But the humorless should have clued in when the logo for the film appeared at the end of the clip. And for the really dumb the New Line copywright at the end should have been the sledgehammer of clarity.

I'm not sure. I saw Tenacious D live a couple years ago in Dublin, just after the album was released.
Doors opened @ 7.30. There was no support act. We stood waiting, unentertained until 9.30. But when they started they were great!
Jack asked how many people had the album - there were cheers.
Jack asked how many people downloaded the album - there were (slightly less) cheers.
Jack spent 30 seconds declaring those who downloaded the album as fucking thieves.
He wasn't joking.
Score = 1
Yes, continue to steal music because we all know how much people at indie labels make, maybe 25K without insurance if they are lucky.
Score = 0
Why is anyone surprised by these comments? By now you must have realized the internet's only purpose is to give stupid people a forum to whine about shit. Oh, and porn, lots and lots of porn. Its a shame you people never developed a decent sense of humor.

I thought shitty music was killing the music industry. Shit, most "artists" don't even write music or play instruments now.
When I download somthing I will buy the cd if I like it, or else I won't listen to it anyway. Compressed music blows.

tribute is a cool song.

I took this from the tour page on tenaciousd.com.
"The Official Tenacious D Policy on the Filming and Photographing of our Shows:
Have fun, go ahead tape our shows, but be cool and don't sell our stuff."
Doesn't sound like the kinda band that mind a bit of downloading.
It was obviously a joke/satire on the idea that piracy is killing the artist.

jack black was hilarious in saving silverman!
"beer bong for the lady?"

you guys(criticizing JB) are douches... can you blame a guy for trying to make a buck? especially jb and kg. sure you can say JB's already got enough money, but he also produces films and the more money he gets the more great films he can make... besides the kage really probably does need this money it's not like he's landing the leading man roles too often. i for one am going to this movie and it is going to fu*&ing rock!

i just wasted 10 minutes of my life listening to you depressing dickheads put jack black down. lets get a couple of things straight here.
1. - jack believes in rock and roll.
2. - he expresses it through comedy and he is funny. in fact, he is funnier than all of you lame up your own ass higher pedestial yuppies.
3. - he is making a living by doing this. you dont like what he does? then dont watch it. dont tell a man how to do his job! i dont go to the shopping centre and tell your dad how to clean puke off the floor for minimum wage, do i?
4. - did you not see some jack black fan coming in here and retaliating like this?
so please, just let the man make me laugh without going into a deeper meaning. its comedy for fucks sake!

You people are pretentious idiots. Go watch the original HBO Tenacious D series and get a clue. This is part of the D schtick.

Jack Black. Jesus' Son. Very Good.

Don't you just love how he seems to think that the only reason ANYBODY ever makes music is cash?

Now when are we going to get a PSA for the music industry that tells them to stop being a douche and actually pay the bands a decent portion of record sales? Who knows, if the bands got paid rather than the RIAA stealing all their money to sue people we might actually get some decent music for a change. I've been buying from Magnatune and the like because they treat their artists properly, I won't even think of buying a CD if the label is on my list of RIAA labels, so a lot of the big name bands are out for me but I'm doing a better job of supporting musicians than the people who ail about piracy but then support the real thieves every time they go to the record store.
