Jay-Z & Alicia Keys Played The World Series

thumbnail icon: Jay-Z & Alicia Keys Played The World Series

With "Empire State Of Mind" Jay-Z's cast himself as the Jeter generation's Billy Joel. His NYC's all about pills ("MDMA got you feeling like a champion, the city never sleeps, better slip you an Ambien") and his song might pack a cringey Alicia Keys hook, unless "bright lights will inspire you" will inspire you, but having Jigga open Game 2 of the World Series with this Blueprint 3 track seemed to go over well with the fans (and judging by some faces, even the Phils). There's some interesting crowd noise when he gets to "I made the Yankees hat more famous than a Yankee can," but you might have to give him that. Jay-Z rapped it live (check the echoes), Alicia sang it to a backing track (check the not-echoes), and the Yankees won by scoring three points -- one for each Blueprint! I am a very big fan of sporting matches!

Game 3 is Saturday night. I'll be seeing Malkuth, Liturgy, Tara Jane O'Neil, Mount Eerie, Bad Brains, and the Jesus Lizard, so you might have to let me know how it goes. Sports!

It's better than a lot of other hooks on Blueprint 3.

don't understand why that chorus is more cliched or cringey than a thousand other hits. plus, this is derek jeter's music when he steps ot the plate, and he's the best.

hey stereogum,

some people enjoy sporting events, many of them quite intelligent/progressive/whatever the fuck you guys get off on perceiving yourselves as. just because someone can discuss Lebron James' chances of staying in Cleveland after this season even if he wins a ring or the merits of Derek Jeter as a clutch-hitter in late october doesn't mean they fall into the stereotypical male jock pile (NO HOMO).

Yankees definitely owe some merch royalties to Jay Z and Fred Durst. To a lesser extent, Puff Daddy, who made a video where his posse sported every rainbowed colored hat available back in '98(!)

I actually like(d) this song, but if I hear it again my head might explode. We get it: Jay-Z is from New York, New York, New York, which, incidentally, is where the Yankees play.

Also, there is a Philly "remix": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6ZI76XNKkk
It is THE WORST.

enjoyable performance for me.

The piano continued via the second keyboard player stage right. (although it could have been a backing track ...not sure really)

Spewing hate is a very simple and quick release for all sorts of negative emotional build up, self inflicted emtional suffering, and the like (I'm not cool enough ..I'm not smart enough ..I should look like X...etc.)

Although it (spewing) never really deals with the problem(s) head on as the suffering continues and builds again shortly after the release. And the cycle continues (spewing / judgements ..etc). Awareness and action each and every time this occrus is the only way to break the cylcle. It takes a lot of work ...most people don't bother.

Have a great wekend!

I wonder how this would've worked had it been the Mets against a non-NY American league?
