Jemina Pearl Makes Solo Debut In Brooklyn

thumbnail icon: Jemina Pearl Makes Solo Debut In Brooklyn

Those of you afraid Jemina Pearl's post-Be Your Own Pet "legacy" would be capped by her cover of "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker" with the ever grim Thurston Moore should likely stop worrying about things like that, but can also rest assured the gal has more Karen O stage antics (+ Karen O hair), pop punk up her sleeve, and leather pants on her legs. Pearl played her first post-BYOP live show over the weekend at the Music Hall Of Williamsburg, opening for the Fluid. The song "So Sick!" comes with some it's-good-to-be-back stage banter.

Someone posted the complete set list. It's unclear how many of these are covers:

01 "Band On The Run"
02 "No Good"
03 "I Hate People"
04 "After Hours"
05 "Nashville Shores"
06 "So Sick!"
07 "Heart Beats"

its a shame that thurston moore gave his stamp of approval to her or BYOP, because without it this girl and her joke of a band would never have gotten the media attention or credibility that they did.

at the risk of sounding like a completely jaded asshole, it astounds me that anybody over the age of 19 or 20 buys into this as anything but trend-following hipster bullshit.

just to clarify, i legitimately love byop, especially jemina pearl's lyrics. "becky" and "the kelly affair" were probably my favorite songs of last year. they're fun, funny, energetic, catchy... i don't know what's not to like.

Trend following? Just because you don't like them doesn't make that true. BYOP was one of the most fun bands I've seen live, and for that matter, put out a couple of really good albums. Really, it just seemed like four kids playing really sloppy punk and having a good time while they did it. And that's a lot more endearing than watching, oh, say, four bearded jerks singing about sex being on fire. Fuck that.

I heard she was terrible live on Saturday, and this proves it.

I wouldn't describe BYOB as trend-following or hipster at all. If anything, they seem to be subjected to more snark than praise by the usual hipster set. If I had to put them into a group I'd say they had much more in common with the teenage, XS t-shirt wearing Warped Tour kids than late twentysomethings wearing v-neck sweaters and listening to Grizzly Bear.

That's what I enjoyed about them. For someone that usually listens to that self-consciously arty stuff, it was nice to listen to a bunch of kids blaring out short punk songs without a care in the world.

I'll throw some more BYOP love into the ring. Sometimes it's just fun to listen to kids make fun music. I think they got too much hate.

That said, I'm a bit disappointed that her solo stuff seems to be in the same vein. I thought she'd try something different...

People seem to either really LOVE byop or really hate em...me I totally loved them...I loved their wild, untamed - yeah, sloppy - sound...that's a big part of what made them so cool...who the F wants to hear the same boring tired old 'precise' every-note-and-drumbeat-in-place TAME BLAND pop-'punk' (ha) sound...kim ON...and the debut album is KICK-ASS, "Bunk Skunk Trunk" and "Bog" being especially great but I love it all...I love Get Awkward too even tho' it ain't quite up to the debut's briliance...anyway, great to see Jemina finally doing something - you rule!!

i completely agree with the love/hate view on byop, and i absolutely loved them. they didn't take anything to seriously and made great garage punk music. so many bands fall victim to being to serious *cough emo cough* that there sound was really refreshing to me
