Jim DeRogatis, Greg Kot, And Conan Hate The Doors

You don't often see music critics on late night television. Maybe with good reason. Last night Jim DeRogatis and Greg Kot, longtime Chicago writers and hosts of Sound Opinions, did a pretty good job on Conan. DeRogatis dissed the Dead and managed a Kraftwerk reference (in reference to Alicia and Frank, nonetheless). And Kot's vexing Bono anecdote is great. Both of 'em took easy digs at Dave Matthews (those 15-minute violin solos) ... and the Doors (who Conan also dislikes). The main reason they were there (besides the strike) was to recap the all-past, no-future Grammys.

Somehow will.i.am wasn't mentioned. Damny. We like how DeRogatis sagely termed Kanye, "Jack Nicholson of the Grammys," i.e. everyone feels the need to reference him (right, Vince Gill?). They seemed sorta nervous (aka they seemed like music writers). Did you catch when Kot said Grateful Dead when he meant DMB? OK, easy mistake. Insulting Max? Unforgivable. Though according to Kot's recap of the night, looks like Weingberg's more concerned with getting to a Spice Girls show on time than kicking DeRogatis's ass. Good thing, since Jim already has Ryan Adams to contend with.

Come on, DeRogotis, you should have brought up your hatred of all things Bruce Springsteen. I wonder if a conscious effort was made not to mention it with Max sitting there.

i'm surprised Kot did not spend the whole time talking about how Wilco is the greatest band in the history of music.

The Doors suck? The Dead suck? Dave Matthews sucks? Finally, some critics who agree with us -- everybody sucks but me!

Wow, I can't believe they cut out the segment where Jim went on a rampage and ate three of the stage hands.

According to Kot's blog, Jim dig take a swipe at Springsteen. Apparently that didn't make it to air.

How can a rock critic mix up Dave Matthews and the Grateful Dead?! And they don't like Jim Morrison--losers. Obviously their tastes are questionable, so why should we care what they think?

no doors = no stooges (or MC5) = no punk rock

its a fact. the doors were darker than the velvet underground, less pretentious, and more fun to listen to. jim derogatis is a clown.

Faces made for radio. But, thank god. They have the best show on music I have ever heard.
They just failed in their first major tv appearance. Jim tried too hard. I imagine Greg bitch slapping him backstage.

Kot's a smart guy. DeRo is entertaining. Together: Radio magic!! I'm addicted to their show.

Do you really have to resort to fat jokes? I don't think they tried to hard...they did an awesome job for their first time on National TV. Dero got a great side swipe at Max W. I think it was fantastic.

Dumbest statement ever:

"no doors = no stooges (or MC5) = no punk rock

its a fact. the doors were darker than the velvet underground, less pretentious, and more fun to listen to."

DeRogatis and Kot may be a couple of super nerds, but they're right on about the Doors.

my problem with these guys is..

i didnt really hear them make critiques about the MUSIC. i heard them talk about Jim Morrison's DRUNKENESS, Dave Matthews' FANS, the HIPPIES that followed the 'dead around, and about U2's FAN CLUB.

the same thing was done with Ryan Adams, DeRogatis doesn't criticize the music, he criticizes the people based off of HIS interpretation of them.

Fucking elitists putting other people down just for the sake of it. they even ADMIT it in this video. it's Horseshit.
