This happened at the Queens Of The Stone Age set during the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo over the weekend. A rowdy dumbass threw something at Josh Homme, who was apparently battling a fever. He was not having it. What followed was a profane, slur-laced tirade so intense I can't do it justice by transcribing it. That's why we have YouTube.
Kid probably learned his lesson. Though Josh could use some lessons of his own.

Whatever happened to Concert Etiquette? When my older, more hip sister allowed me to attend shows, she made sure I followed or at least was aware of some important guidelines. The most important was the one in which I do nothing to embarrass her. I fucked that one up more than once, but I never threw shit at the band, and I played college baseball, it would have been fun trust me!!! I had respect, if not for the band, than for Rock N' Roll. For anyone who has ever tried to perform in front of people, it's not always easy. When people have been criticising Homme's use of language, others have responded by implying that this is defending the bottle thrower, which isn't the case. I think most people would agree that the bottle thrower deserved to be embarrassed and possibly insulted, but it just wasn't necessary for homophobic language to be used.
And there's definitely a double standard at work- defending Homme by saying it's a rock concert and he can say whatever he likes, but ignoring the fact that he essentially gets extremely worked up over someone throwing a bottle, which could equally be considered part of the job if you're performing on stage. I don't agree with this but it's the view some people are putting across- I think both artist and crowd have a responsibility to behave in a certain way, and in this case both the boy and Homme made themselves look stupid.
I think the video posted of Jack White is a much better example of how to deal with it- he points out the stupidity of the person and embarrasses him in front of the entire crowd, but doesn't resort to pointless cursing, homophobic insults or empty threats which the artist knows they can issue because they've got a security team backing them up. What if the boy had managed to climb onto the stage to face Homme as he suggested? Obviously security would intervene before Homme would ever suffer any attack, or he would punch a stupid young teenager in front of an entire crowd. What a big man. Embarrassing the boy and getting him thrown out by security would have been enough without all the stupid bravado.
And like I said, I absolutely hate people who behave like that at gigs, throwing stuff, spilling drinks, or pushing people, but you just have to expect that you're going to have to put up with it at most large gigs. But I think when the artist behaves as poorly as the audience member then they give up the right to talk about protecting themselves from harm.

Generally the idea in this context is "it's bad to be a faggot so I will call you one."
Given the fact that homophobic terms, like racist terms, are still thrown around like this (without any thought to its associations) Homme would, in fact, be correct: it is still a bad time to be black or gay or anything other than what Josh Homme is (white, middle-upper class, male and straight).

As a woman with two lesbian mothers, I find it disturbing that this man had nothing better to say when he was upset than to imply that he was homosexual, to call him a derogatory term referring to the female genitalia, and to suggest that he lacked a penis and was therefore defective. There are a lot worse things that can be true of a person than homosexuality, not having a penis, or possessing female genitalia. (I've seen Queens perform live and have to wonder what he'd have said to me if I'd thrown something at him. Would he have called me a dick? Told the whole crowd I was missing a vagina?) I think this videoclip says more about the ability of some folks to engage in rational discourse than anything else. Even if Josh Homme were a raging homophobe and the offending fan were a flaming stereotype of gay malehood, the issue was not one of sexuality, but of consideration. And if the whole point was not to communicate but to be funny - well, I still haven't ever understood when hurling crass and cliched insults (not tossing out a pointed witticism at the proper moment a la Winston Churchill) became hilarious.
