Julian Casablancas' "First On-Camera Interview In Three Years"

thumbnail icon: Julian Casablancas' "First On-Camera Interview In Three Years"

As mentioned, Julian Casablancas is releasing his debut 8-song solo full-length Phrazes For The Young this fall. To help get folks excited for it, he sat down for his first on-camera interview in three years to discuss the differences between recording solo and with a band (one is collaborative, one not so much), music he's currently listening to (Beirut, Telepathe, Dirty Projectors, Beach House), what to expect from the Strokes' eventual fourth record (it'll be "pretty damn good..."), and etc. As far as Phrazes goals, he wants to inspire, of course, and "to capture the catchiness of modern music" but also "[get] at the power and seriousness of classical music or older music." (Judging from an instrumental interlude, he's not kidding.) Watch his hair blow in a gentle breeze while you take a listen.

There'll be a "special series of U.S. dates" followed by an official solo tour later this year. Keep watch at juliancasablancas.com.

The expression "and etc." is redundant, because etc. is an abbreviation for et cetera, which means "and others".

think his voice sucks too much to make anything other than gutter sleaze rock

I actually think his voice is pretty fantastic. It may seem like a strange reference point, but the comedy collaboration he did with Lonely Island, 'Boombox', shows how capable he is of singing to synth-heavy music and his voice sounds brilliant.

I like how he says that there are at least 10 great bands out there nowadays. Presumably that includes the four he lists, so it means there are only 6 slots still available for JC's affection.

Holy Moly... and people were hating on Muse's United States of Eurasia and Uprising. Judging from the samples, this is going the same synth-opera route.

Looks like these Strokes fans are gagging over the interview and not paying attention to the samples. Hate to break your bubble, but this doesn't sound promising!

I wouldn't exactly call it operatic, he's not singing in the same or even a similar register to Matt Bellamy. In any case, I don't have a problem with Muse's instrumentation, I just personally find their lyrics to be (mostly) God-awful, while Julian Casablancas' lyrics are consistently good and occasionally excellent.

True. It'll be a synth-symphony.

Actually I believe the samples are for Julian's solo album, not the next Strokes one. His will be full of classical synth sounding stuff because as he said in the interview he can go off and do his own tangents that he can't do with the band...maybe you should pay attention next time

Um, I know the samples are from his solo album. It's safe to say that all these people are Strokes fans because he has not put out any music of his own to have personal fans.

It's good to know that he still looks cool after all these years.

All I can say is that if loving the Strokes is wrong, then damnit I don't want to be right...

Only 10 bands (at least) out there that are pretty good....this guy needs to get out.

i am not going to hate on this. the synth textures and solo introspection shit sounds like latest of montreal though...

It seems Phrazes For The Young might have enough "classical synth" juxtapositions to keep it interesting. Despite all the hate, I'm still looking forward to it.
