Kanye Does That Thing He Does That Resembles Singing On American Idol
As Simon Cowell likes to say, American Idol "is a singing competition." It's a show where four judges who are varying degrees of witty, clueless, lucid, and the dawg pore over the minute inflections in tune and tone of thousands of contestants' voices in an attempt to find the one and only American Idol. Until next year, when this process that speaks to a nation forever worshipping prefabricated idols who glide by on superficial sheen but little pathos gets a reboot. 'Cause really, it's all about singing in tune!
So Kanye West did "Heartless" last night on the show, obvs.
Perfect.

Great song. Performance? Not so much. It's getting harder and harder to defend you, Yeezy.
Score = 6
i mean, it makes sense. someone's gotta teach the kids how to use the auto-tunez.
Score = 20
kanye's performance makes more sense than ryan seacrest does at any given time.
Score = 9
This site is quickly becoming Kanye v. Corgan.
Score = 5
one more reason not to watch american idol

I've never seen somebody wear that much denim.

Canadian Tuxedo

Don't know why American Idol even bothers to (supposedly) find people who can sing fo' realz when the Auto Tune junkies are the ones making the big bucks.
Score = 16
painfull to watch...

there are no excuses to be made for kanye west? personally, i hate him. however, i can excuse some of his earlier stuff. but this last album is pure rubbish. why can't we all admit it?! robocop is the only decent song.
Score = -6
you are wrong.
and robocop demo was WAY better
Score = 0
Don't they normally ask the judges what they thought after the performance? I guess they couldn't lie to Ye's face and tell him he was great because then the contestants would mimick his shitiness. That performance, like all of his performances of songs from 808s & Heartbreak, was just AWFUL.
Score = 3
But... but... what happened to his hair?! Is the mullet gone for real?
Score = 8
See kids...ANYONE can become a multi-platinum selling pop star. Talent is optional.
Score = 7
Some dull moments, some pretty epic ones (this scream at the end!).
Score = -1
I agree with the general consensus. There are a few spots where the auto-tune seemingly drops out... it's true that he can NOT sing. lol... I guess they don't have an Elvis emulator like he would love to jump into.
Score = 1
You would think him and his group of professional technicians and musicians would have figured out a way to make the auto tune sound perfect for his live performances by now. Mostly it is due to when he sings off pitch the auto tune chooses the wrong note. But after his first performance you think he would have said oops I should fix that.
Score = 1
Ok everyone. Relax. Stop hating. Obviously Kanye West isn't a singer. He's no Ne-Yo, nor Omarion, or any other soft ass singer you can think of. But he is an unreal producer/songwriter. He's progressing as an artist. And I can guarantee that he will be done with this audio tune shit after this album. He might rock it a little after this but he is just using it as a way to make a certain type of music to match how he is feeling right now. Bottom line is he's richer and cooler than anyone who has ever looked at this website.

You're gonna be a little embarrassed when you go back and read that post later.

Robot Jones,
That was HILARIOUS! Made me laugh my good laugh for the day. Thanks!

This sounds mysteriously like Kanye, minus the ALL CAPS!!!!!!!!
Score = 9
Kanye looked like the CEO of Levis
Score = 6
i dont understand why everyone is still arguing about how bad he is as a singer. Everyone has known he was bad since love lockdown in september (or whenever that was,) and it seems stupid to still be caught up on that.
that said i thought this performance was pretty cool

kanye needs to sit down...permanently
Score = 0
It ain't just about singing, you gotta have showmanship. Kanye was obviously there to show the wannabes contestants all about that.
I think the SNL performance was worst actually, but it's laughable that a singing competition would feature this guy.
Simon: Absolutely dreadful. Pack your denim bag and head back to singing in the subway at peak hours. *audience boos* Well, I'm just being honest.
Score = 6
I would absolutely love to see the hyper-critical one tear apart Kanye's performance right there. Just asking him what he's doing on a singing program.
Score = 0
ANY competition that would have Paula Abdul judging someone's singing talent obviously is either clueless or has a pretty ironic sense of humor. Kanye West is an overrated tool. So he can speak quickly over rehashed Daft Punk songs. Wow, what a talent.
Score = -3
there is a band? there are back up singers? does kanye have a monitor?
Score = -1
seriously kanye. why?
Score = -1
I love Kanye and everything, but that was some seriously ironic shit. American Idol. Really, Mr. West?? But what's even more sad is that some of you think he seriously considers himself a singer.
Score = 1
Hey stereogum I thought you liked his new stuff. Thought I saw him in your heavy rotation awhile back.....Then you title something saying "does that thing he does that resembles singing"? D'you like him or not?
Score = 0
yeah decide so that all the commenters on here can follow suit, because people are getting confused - HOW SHOULD WE FEEL?!?!!?!?!?!
Score = 2
Yeah i saw that, it was terrible. Kanye doesn't/can't sing, and should stick to the 'spittin' rhymes' to a beat without a tune.
Score = 0
dang the video got removed. im bummed i can't share in the mockery.
