That was quite possibly the worst attempt at harmonies ever performed. When Robert Smith is singing backup, it's decent, but I felt like rubbing a cheese grater accoss my face when Johnathan Davies was trying to "sing" In Between Days.
Anyone know where I can get one of those memory erasers from the Men In Black movies???

Here's a fun game: pause the video anytime there's a close-up on Johnathan Davies' or Robert Smith's face. Without fail, it looks like they're trying to push out a big, stubborn poo.

I see where this is going and I'm going to put an end to it right away. Do not turn this into a Smith versus Moz debate. They are both as close to heaven as one can get on earth. PERIOD.
In comparison, Korn's music and Jonathan Davis' voice is about as close to hell as one can get on earth. I'm sure he's a cool guy and I'm sure he's a big Cure fan (and I'm sure Robert S. loves his ass kissed), but this video is atrocious.
It makes me want to listen to some Justin Timberlake to wash the pain away.

All downhill from there. Robert Smith looked better in South Park.

I want to find a positive spin to this, but it's hard. I'll say this - Robert Smith is open-minded, at the very least.

That being said, Jonathan Davis has the worst voice on the planet. This is far worse than the Radiohead cover.

For what it's worth, Robert Smith's voice still sounds good. Too bad he's wasting it with such an awful performance. (I almost got through without attacking it)

The Cure's Unplugged was quite beautiful and highly recommended, and I'm not even much of a Cure fan.

Way to promote your shitty band DW, taking shots at Smith who's contributed more to music than you ever will.

That being said, again Korn are terrible, and yes The Cure's last album was pretty hit-and-miss. However, anyone that saw them on the Curiosa Tour knows Smith's still got it.

Just to stick up for Team Cure as much as I also love the Smiths, Moz hasn't made a good album since Your Arsenal and that's not subjective, that's fact. Anyways, back to the matter at hand. This would have made me sick to my stomach, but it doesn't matter anymore because I stopped caring what the Cure did after Wish. That was the end of The Cure as far as I'm concerned.

Shocked.

Yes, I also blame Ross Robinson, in a way. Someone needs to tell Robert Smith what is going on in the world. Robert should let me (why not?) produce the next Cure album (after the upcoming album, obviously) and so should Morrissey.

The last good Morrissey album was not Your Arsenal, it was Maladjusted, and furthermore, his best album is Vauxhall and I. Hell, the last two could have been good, but the poorly deployed protools production made me want to die.

Yes, die. This is Morrissey, after all.

Also, last point: the battle has never really been Cure vs. Smiths, it has been Cure vs. Depeche Mode, in my experience.

I mean it's not the best performance ever but It wasn't horrid. Whoever was playing keys needs to die, but the rest was fine. At least Korn had the foresight to know they would probably suck Unplugged so they tried to draft as many big names as possible to bost their profile a bit.

I'll be curious to see how different the mixed and edited CD version of this performance will sound.

Yay! It's an argument!

First, to the guy who claimed I wrote in promote my own band, I must say I'm confused. If you are assuming the band I mentioned is mine, I'm flattered. If not, and you stumbled upon my MySpace page, then that, dear sir, is your own fault. I never told you to look behind that curtain.

Second, Korn has not been relevant since "Issues". It is partially their own fault for not being creative enough to try new things in their band. If you keep on with the same formula, you're going to slip.

It is also partially a fault of culture itself. The world has passed Korn by, along with Limp Bizket, Staind and a thousand nu metal crunchers. Not their fault that the favor fell to emo and screamo - bands like Def Leppard and Whitesnake, even Van Halen to a degree, lost a foothold after grunge. It's just how it is.

But MTV Unplugged is an easy out. "Let's tinker with our formula in this safe environment, far away from our regular gig so we don't accidentally alter it". Well, that's not creativity. That's fear. Let's not confuse one for the other.

And where Robert Smith is concerned, he has several really good albums in his past, but that is that. I have not forgiven The Cure yet for the awful shell game known as "Bloodflowers". Smith has antecedent credibility, which is why he was asked to be on this show, but few, even among his most ardent fans, think he's ever going to hit those creative peaks again.

Which is all to say that I feel wholeheartedly justified in criticizing this program. I have many, many favorite bands that wil never again hit the heights of former glories. That's just the way it is, and toothless defense will not change it, much as I'd like it to.

Ergo, cogito, Chico, Zeppo,

I love how DW just assumes he speaks on behalf of Robert Smith's "most ardent fans." Not everything can be Disintegration, and Bloodflowers certainly isn't a shell of an album (like, say, Ringleader of the Tormentors). And at least Smith admits his appearance is completely preposterous.
That being said, this match-up is completely intolerable - has Jonathan Davis ever heard himself sing... fucking awful.

Oh Dw, how adorably coy you are!

First of all, linking to your band/project/profile in your comment isn't providing much of a 'curtain'. It's more of a 'hey, look at me!' move. But we'll leave that for the moment. I was a bit harsh with the 'shitty band' comment - it just struck me as self-aggrandizement at the time - so my apologies there.

Even if Smith's current musical endeavors don't match his past glory, it doesn't make him past his relevance. Just look at the current surge of crappy emo you mention; how many of those bands owe a clear debt to The Cure? I'd wager Panic at the Disco, Cursive, Fall Out Boy, etc. wouldn't exist in their current form if not for Smith. Sure, we could hold that against him since all those bands are terrible, but I like to think it all comes down to that pesky 'free will' thing. Any shitty bands Korn are responsible for, however, are entirely their own fault for setting the example in the first place.

Posted by: Sean at 03/06/07 8:55 PM  | Reply
Score = 0 Vote up Vote down

Coy? I dare say, I know not of the pond you speak. For the sake of clarity, Strapping Young Lad is a band fronted by Devin Townsend, who was a part of Steve Vai's group for a short period of time. I mentioned it because the poster before me seemed to quote from a recent SYL song.

Yes, my name is linked to a MySpace page, but one would never know that unless they bothered to click my name and, frankly, that's like breaking into Henson Company to find out if the Muppets are anatomically correct. Why would anyone do that? Fuzz fetish? Beats me (also a possible fetish, but I digress).

As for Smith, and relevance and essentially lumping all fans into a single viewpoint, fine. Guilty as charged. However, I'm certainly not the only one who feels that if new material comes out tomorrow, it will not be met with the same enthusiasm as the recent Warner remasters did. That is what I mean about relevance in it's purest sense: that The Cure cannot generate excitement with new stuff but certainly can with old reissues.

For a fan as I consider myself to be, I got turned off after the really strong strides "Wild Mood Swings" seemed to take, only to have that progress lost on "Bloodflowers", which had a couple good tracks and a lot of long, meandering boring tracks. The self-titled album didn't help. Now, can you say you'd get more excited by more of that than, say, a spanking new reissue of "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" or "The Head On The Door"?

Forget about who were influence by the band. Every band is influenced by someone or another, and that doesn't mean a thing. Ben Folds is influenced by Joe Jackson, Joe Jackson by Steely Dan and Steely Dan by William freaking Burroughs. William 'Naked Lunch' Burroughs is not responsible for "Songs For Silverman" being kinda dull; only Ben (although I'm still a fan). The Cure is not accountable for spawning Fall Out Boy, only for their own releases.

All of which is to say that I have nothing to blatantly sell anyone, this whole Korn Unplugged thing was a mistake on the parts of many, "Wish" is a fantastic pop album, William S. Burroughs is dead, Ben Folds should have lunch withthe other two Five, Fall Out Boy makes me swallow glass and you can totally be a hero to elementary school kids by shouting, at the top of your lungs, "poopyknot".

Poopyknot!!

Yes, you seem to digress quite often. Meandering diatribes & evasive puns aside, I never referred to Strapping Young Lad. Only you downing Smith then linking to a personal project in your comments. You can use as many mildly amusing yet highly questionable similes as you like, but the simplest answer usually being the truth, you want people to click the link. It's an optional inclusion in the commenting system and isn't required to post. That's all I was referring to originally and as I said I believe I was a bit harsh. However, it certainly doesn't help that suspicion when you deny it with a rather spurious defense.

Onto Smith...you surely can't deny the power of influence as being an essential ingredient to relevance? Even if one hated the musical output of say, The Beatles or their subsequent solo projects, you surely couldn't deny the importance of their influence on modern music.

You've qualified relevance as pertaining only to the band's current musical output but that's certainly a self-appointed restriction that no one else is bound to follow. The fact that people are still discussing him, still arguing over the current output, still citing him as a source of inspiration, still cloning his personal style, etc., would point to his status as 'Still Relevant'. By way of contrast, I don't see all that many people claiming Korn as an influence though perhaps I'm simply not listening to the right music.

Now, a point-by-point on your last paragraph:
A)I'm glad you aren't selling something
B)This WAS a terrible idea
C)'Wish' is great though it's no 'Disintegration'
D)I believe he is, but I'd need to see an M.E.'s report to be sure
E)'Songs for Silverman' may not have done it for you, but 'Rockin' The Suburbs' is brilliant and the 'other two' didn't really have all that much to do with anything in the first place
F)You shouldn't allow Fall Out Boy to make you do anything. If they jumped off a bridge would you?
G)I've not tested it with school children yet but I just gained the undying devotion of everyone in my office

OK, so it's not great, certainly, but it's not as bad as everyone is saying. Except for the parts where the guy from Korn sings.

Also, I have to chime in here about the Cure. Disintegration is a great album, maybe one of the best albums of the 80s. But that doesn't mean that the Cure are no longer relevant. Wish was also a good album, but I would say that you aren't paying attention if you have ignored Wild Mood Swings. That album was excellent! And while Bloodflowers wasn't all it was cracked up to be, there are a few songs on there that were amazing (like Bloodflowers & Out of This World) and if you can't see that, then you never really liked the Cure. Then there's the self titled album, which was also amazing. The opening track, Lost, was the most impassioned song Smith has written for a while... angry on par with Shiver & Shake or Disintegration (the song, not the album). Also, Robert Smith has been collaborating with people for a really long time and most of the time it's quite good. This particular collaboration sounded like a good idea to me, but that's because I forgot how awful the guy from Korn sounds.

As for the Moz vs. Robert Smith vs. Depeche Mode... get off it.

Give Robert a break. The man is pushing 50. He looks great for his age. He's not supposed to look 25 anymore. He looked younger than Jonathan Davis. I thought he sounded great too.

Wild Mood Swings was a downer compared to the rest of their stellar albums, but come on, Bloodflowers and The Cure (LP Version and NOT the CD version) are fantastic albums. Bloodflowers is a masterpiece. How can anyone hate this? The Cure still has it in my book.

As for Korn, I'm not a big fan, but I enjoyed the unplugged songs.

You all may believe as you shall,
however i think The Cure is doing
good for a band that never really
wanted nor anticipated all the
attention they have.Robert is a right
genious and deserves more than he is
being credited for.He wanted The
Cure to be a band that was not in
it for fame or money, but for the
sake and passion of music.

As for Morrissey, someone needs to
put him out of his missery. He cries
entirely TOO much.Yeah Robert cries
and moans, but Morrissey is "a
professional moaner".i don't think
i've heard Morrissey sing a happy song
yet.However, i don't listen to Morrissey
very often if at all.So i don't guess
i have any room to speak on that behalf.

Korn isn't as bad as any of you may think.
You must admire the fact that they have
the courage to take the plunge and do
something different. You may call it posh
or camp, but i believe they are an alright
band.

I've liked The Cure for about a year or 2
now and what suprises other people is i'm
only 14 years old and i like a band that
came way before my time.i used to like rap
and all that stupid shit, and now i like a
band that consists of men wearing make-up.
i love it and also respect their uniqueness.
They're a great band and you have to give
them credit for continuing what they do
although some people who act like ungreatful
twats. They started a whole new outlook.

And one last thing.....ROBERT IS ABSOLUTELY
GORGEOUS AND FUCK ALL YOU ASSHATS WHO ARE
BASHING HIM ON HIS WEIGHT...AHEM wbeka.YOU
MUST HAVE WEIGHT ISSUES TO HAVE BASHED ROBERT
LIKE THAT.YOU DON'T KNOW HIM.FOR ALL YOU KNOW
HE COULD BE THE MOST ACE PERSON OF ALL THE
PEOPLE YOU KNOW.GO FUCK YOUR MUM YOU SORRY
RAT MOLESTING NECROPHILIAC OF A CUNT. :D

How the hell can anyone NOT like this video?...Obviously ..you bastards don't have good taste in music.....i think the harmonies were perfect..everything blended. and i want to thank the *~+Miss Haylee Rochelle+~* for actually knowing what she's talking about, and not making a complete ass of herself on the internet...you kick ass..and also Kat,Alan, Kyle,Goon, and anybody else that i don't know, that isn't making a complete dick of themselves for everyone to see.....

KoRn is amazing for one thing...and i don't care what you assholes think....they are a great band, not because they sound great (which i think they do) but because they write music that pertains to their emotions and personal experience!!!! that is what makes a good band...

oh and the reason there was a rabbit, horse, and a pig is because it pertains to the cover of KoRn's "See you on the Other Side" album.

anyone who is willing to sit on the internet and write about shit they don't understand...really need to get laid or something...go get a job.

All you guys SUCK BIG DONKEY D**KS! You have no idea how awsome it is to see two of the most influential bands still alive conform into one ball of talent. the Cure has been rocking the world longer than most of you have been alive. Korn has been around setting new standards, and has blown open doors for so many other rock bands. I think that if you don't appreciate the meaning behind this preformance than you are a literal assface.

what tha F.... Robert did one song with korn and the cure fans start loseing it.

it was good for KoRn fan's to experience such a unique voice which is what both those bands have made it on, Unique Styles & Sounds . A lot of you are carrying on like it has somehow changed the world!!!

KoRn bless there poor early original souls lost there way once they moved into the musicslut <wiki< teen section of the music shop.....

Broken down //// most intense Cure fans would never like a band like Korn but it wasent done for Cure fans was it ? It was done for KoRn fans and from that side people are very happy to be humming "yesterday i felt so old" to a much deeper sounding korn riff.... Robert Smith is a very diverse fella and KoRn fans would automatically get why he did this if he is a fan

oNce again it was one song!!! and to see the vultures go after there supposed musical god so savagely, kinda is a bit sad !

I am off to sample some Robert smith for my progressive house ,thanks Korn....anyone got any objections…

ish!

Wow I left watching the clip with good thoughts then I got bombarded by a bunch of narrowminded fanboys. Either you like KoRn and hate the thought of your heavy music being mixed with soft 80's, or you love the Cure and can't stand KoRn. Personally I love The Cure, and I was never really a big fan of KoRn but they are ok I guess. I think they did a pretty good job mixing two totally different genres together. I'd like to see any of you take something like Make Me Bad and Inbetween Days and make them work together. I enjoyed it. And Robert Smith does not look bad, at least he doesn't look like every other stale stereotypical emo/trendy fuck head out there. Tho I did gag when I heard he played with Blink 182 -_-

Bloodflowers is getting trashed, The Cure is, Korn is, each and everyone of you as well. I might as well join in the fun. I've liked Korn for a long time because they have done alot of interesting and exciting things, soundtracks, experiments, etc. Their music is sometimes fun to listen to. The Cure is/was an AMAZING band who released nothing but hits, from Three Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry - Through Wild Mood Swings. BloodFlowers does have a few fans, (very few) but its kinda like watching the movie and likeing it OK because you never read the book, if that makes sense. Alot of their old school fans didn't even like Wild Mood Swings, but I did. It was classic and new.

Anyways I thought the performance was both horrid and great. Robert hasn't looked that good and sang that good in a long time. Those songs surely didn't go together anymore than their voices do. :) But I can tolerate listening to it a couple times, because like it or not, its new Robert stuff :)

Cheers

Korn sucks. The cure sucked too, but the Korn sucks more. Broccoli sucks. Brussel sprouts too.. Poverty sucks, so does Racism and hang-nails. Constipation sucks. What sucks more than heavy traffic... what the hell was I talking about?

I like The Cure and I love Korn. Try getting the energy out of anybody elses shows that you can get from a Korn show. The performance did not suck and all you little homos that wanna suck Robert off are just jealous that he's out there stepping outside of the mold with the heaviest hitting metal band out there.
