Les Savy Fav's Big Break

Those lovable NY art-punks Les Savy Fav have schooled us on drug lingo and perfume ads and patterned products, but gearing up for last week's Randall Island show with Arcade Fire, LCD Soundsystem, Blonde Redhead, and Wild Light, the "obscure underground band" decided to document the hopes, dreams, and backstage chicanery that goes into rocking out for 25,000 with all sorta current indie-hep acts.

Turns out its equal parts good and bad: pedicures, "iPod phones," top hats, organic cleaners, vests, and Easter baskets of fruit along with reduced guest and set lists and no bass or Limoncello (fuuccckk!). For those of you with short attention spans, the near-finale pronunciation of "Patrick Swayze" should be more than enough to keep you glued to the screen for the duration. Considering Tim Harrington's sundry half-soaked stage antics, a Dirty Dancing collab (Harrington replacing post-cool nose Jennifer Grey?) would actually make good sense. So, so romantic.

Band To Watch: Hospital Ships

As we pass saturation point for press coverage of Montreal, Portland, Brooklyn and et cetera, it seems Lawrence, Kansas is poised for its coming turn in the music media trend piece carousel. At least from what we're hearing; this marks...

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
