M. Ward Brings Letterman "Never Had Nobody Like You"

thumbnail icon: M. Ward Brings Letterman "Never Had Nobody Like You"

Mr. M. Ward is on the perennial promotion circuit thanks to the sizable success of his She & Him feeding directly into the ever-swelling support for his solo endeavors, so here he is again, doing the talk show thing. Matt's mostly comfortable being the visual focal point here, although he's brought enough players and background singers to both disperse the attention and flesh out "Never Had Nobody Like You"'s fuzzy shuffling blues-bar guitars and overarching throwback boogie. Although really, you don't need much more than Matt's husked and char-burned vocals to earn audience attention:

Fun performance, although the levels were a little off for those backgrounders. Studio version has a better mix:

Right. Because nobody knew of M Ward before She & Him, but Zooey Deschanel was a household name.

Its actually three members of Oakley Hall.
I saw him in Buffalo on Monday night and he was spectacular despite the horrible sound.

Same set up for the show as here on Letterman? And was the set list mostly Hold Time and Post-War material?

i was gonna go to the tralf too. Ended up only going to my bloody valentines day at soundlab then got sick. M. Ward always sounds good, I've liked him since I first heard his cover of "to go home."

Zooey Deschanel sucks, and so does M. Ward. No offense, but this was better than on the CD because the troll wasn't singing backup.
