Mandy Moore Covers Rihanna

"Umbrella" has been so inescapable this summer, topping charts from Canada to Croatia (seriously, Jim was just there and they play it constantly when they're not losing your luggage). In this week's Hills season premiere MTV strategically used Rihanna's smash, as well as the sultry, acoustic take by YouTuber Marié Digby (take that Heidi, you lying bitch.). But the deluge ain't over yet. Former "Candy" girl and current Triple-A radio hopeful-Duritz muse-actress Mandy Moore dropped by Yahoo! to deliver an even more mawkish full band version. You'll love her intro: "This was one of my favorite songs, um, I guess, of the moment? I don't know, I'm not a big Top 40 sort of listener and I don't tend to listen to this type of music..." Um, enjoy?

I love Mandy Moore. Especially since she dissed her own acting and singing abilities. She certainly seems to be the most down-to-earth pop singer out there. I kind of feel sorry for her, not really being able to find her place in the music world. I'd love to work alongside her (not innuendo) and help her find her sound, or her niche, because she's just not come near anything substantial yet. She's definitely got talent.

this mandy moore chick is trying to make fun of something nice. that video is number one for a reason. This "artist" (mandy moore) is incapable to create her own songs and so she toke someone else's song and "improve" it (please notice the huge amount of irony). It's very easy to criticise, but it's a little hard to create something nice.
Conclusion :
-RIHANNA - GOOD (keep up the good work girl).
- mandy moore - BAD (play nice girl )

Mandy Moore seems to be on the right track. At least she's not wigging out like Britney Spears (although a few topless photos would be nice) and she's at least trying to make her music a little more credible. Maybe she should experiment with acid or something. I don't know. But I like her well enough I guess.

Say what you will, Mandy Moore does interesting covers (seriously what woman her age covers "Senses working Overtime"?)...

The Rihanna original is tempting in a guilty, guilty pleasure... especially since it reminds me of the 80's for some reason.

Kudos to Mandy Moore for this version which works really well.

Off to find the MP3 I know must be out there by now.

I didn't think she was trying to make fun of the song, but it did seem rather odd though. The song has actually been remixed twice. The third remix is pretty good. You can probably find it on YouTube.

if you watch the juxtaposition of mandy, in her somewhat-conservative (at least for hollywood) dress, against the music video of rihanna, a girl who isn't even twenty (i believe) dancing in underwear and fishnets with a whip inbetween her legs, it's an interesting comment on pop culture and what is expected of women who are barely out of their teens. just thought i'd mention it.
i liked the song better originally though...mandy didn't do anything to it, she just basically sang the lyrics in tempo over one of her own songs, which all sound the same.

Am I the only one who thinks the original version of this song is a tuneless blight on the pop landscape? Moore's cover is a curiosity, not much more than that.

LIFE wise.. unlike her predecessors.. britney fro example.. what the heck appened to that girl.. she's wasting her life!!

I think I would have appreciated the song a little more had Mandy Moore not condescendingly commented on how "I'm not a top40 kind of listener and I tend not to listen to this type of music". Oh I get it, you're not into mainstream. Mandy just had to make a cover so all the anti-top40s, including herself, could listen to it without fear of being judged by their peers. pathetic cover.

that it is the funniest thing ever. not mandy singing umbrella but that comment about croatia. i was just over there and the song was seriously playing everywhere u went. it was a bit freaky actually, not being able to escape from 'umbrella ella ella ehhhh'. and its true, they do seem to lose everyones luggage!

Mr Weenie, maybe she really doesn't like the top 40 but likes this song. I don't see why that so often makes someone a phony. The music in the pop charts is mostly genuinely poor!

This is just wretched!

Why is MM trying to be deep? "I don't listen to this type of music," is a bunch of crap. If you're trying to be on some other level, try being honest. You DO listen to pop music and its okay. Listening to everything IS cool, but covering the most popular pop song when you're Mandy Moore is NOT. What a stupid idea, who are your advisers anyway?  Way to go... next time save it for the shower.

Its not just phony, its hypocritical. Ridicule the top 40s and then listen to Gregg Gillis mash them up and say its brilliant. If Rihanna wears a skimpy dress its trashy but if its Uffie thats cool.Come on. Is mainstream that taboo for the indie kids these days?

i think this version is great! i hated the Rhianna version the first time i heard it, she has this weird, nasal or whatever you call it type of voice and makes up for it by wearing skimpy cloths which really degrades a woman.. especially the "ella ella eh eh eh" part, she sounds like a pirated CD. mandy moore on the other hand did the song more justice... i can now listen to this song without thinking that my player isn't working.. and to all those who are dissing MM for her cover, you're just jealous coz you can't sing this song half as well as Mandy can even if your pathetic lives depended on it!
