Mastodon Perform "Divinations" At Spinner

thumbnail icon: Mastodon Perform "Divinations" At Spinner

You don't get the banjo intro or sacrificial virgin, but Mastodon does offer up the rest of Crack The Skye's first single. It's not one of the best Mastodon songs ever, but the guys put a lot of energy into its execution, so I'll give them that. In addition to "Divinations" they also do Crack's "Oblivion," Blood Mountain's "Colony Of Birchmen," and sit down for an interview. But the single comes first.

You can watch the rest of the performance along with the Q&A at Spinner. In the interview they talk about meeting Lemmy and playing with Metallica and give shout outs to such "new" (?) bands as Isis, High On Fire, Lightning Bolt, Mars Volta, Torche, and Kylesa (who's Static Tensions is one of the best albums of '09, by the way).

Crack The Skye is out 3/24 via Reprise.

Thank you for staying on Mastodon, Brandon - your posts are refreshing in sea of throw-away indie - I'll take more low end any day, rather than vote with my wallet for
SEO indie bands - I dig timeless rock - You should check out Entrance Band. You
might just fall in love.

This song is great, the band is stunning live and the most original and talented band out there right now. This album will be great, and it might be their best work yet. Although Blood and Thunder is classic already, so saying it's not their best work is not an insult at all. Thanks for not strictly concentrating on the all too precious indie rock like She and Him and the like. BORING.

...and why are metal bands so into this old-English aesthetic when they are playing a genre that is so incredibly far-removed from anything resembling those times? It would be like if all hip-hop artists had a raging boner for 12th century France or something. I feel like I could possibly appreciate this genre if I had some grounding -- but without any context it just comes across as kind of ridiculous to me.

Actually, metal has substantial connections to medieval music. Metal bands frequently use modes, which were the precursors of modern scales. Also, metal bands often connote evil by using the tritone, which has been recognized for its dissonance since the Middle Ages.

Damn son! I was in the middle of thinking "This person is probably wrong when musical theory comes into play...." and you just gave them a free education in "Music 101". Good work!

In the Middle Ages almost 60% of vaginas had sharp fangy teeth that would chew wangs asunder, like they wuz Chiclets™. This was known as "Vagina Dentata" or "Courtney Love Syndrome". It was believed that if you played "Heavy" music on the harpsichord or lute it would cause the teeth to fall out. For more information on vaginas or lutes please visit your local library.
