Menomena In A Basement

Been a while since we've heard from Stereogum crush Menomena, but that doesn't mean we don't think about them longingly on nostalgic walks in the park or stare longingly at the image of their album art. The Portland trio recently descended into the depths of Juan's Basement, where last we saw Jesse Sykes, to perform the propulsive prog-gospel pop of Friend And Foe champ "Muscle'n Flo." Juan knows video; dig the jerky cuts through the verse and the trickling bridge's underwater-rippling soft-focus. Quite stylish.

I think I saw Jim Halpert. Jim and Juan? Juan and Jim? Krasinski is taking over the world.

Yeah, that kind of looked like Jim standing around as the band was setting up. Do you think after the interview, but before he went back to Scranton he checked out Menomena in Juan's Basement?

Quit Your Day Job: Ungdomskulen

The Bergen trio Ungdomskulen play proggy post punk, mixing chops and hooks with a sense of humor. But they don't sound like Primus. When I was in Norway a couple years ago, "Ungdomskulen" seemed to be on everybody's lips (or...

Premature Evaluation: Beck - Modern Guilt

It's been some time since we learned Modern Guilt, Beck Hansen's eighth album, would be some sort of psych rock minimalist '60s trip with Danger Mouse. Since then, we've gotten a look at the old-school jazz/Blue Note-style cover art and...
