Metal That Sounds Like Other Metal
Someone named BakNBlack came up with a pretty ingenious and ongoing project, pointing out where various rock and metal riffs echo, borrow, pillage, and/or pay homage to one another. It's rich enough territory that he can afford to be picky: "NOTE: I will not be doing anymore 'Metallica-Megadeth' comparisons." We hear you -- that's like comparing Apples and Beach Boys.
Oh wait, there's already a Volume VI, featuring Nirvana and Kyuss, David Bowie and Metallica, Styx and Judas Priest, and others...
So much fun! In fact, we really should borrow and adapt the scenario. So, ahem, any Indie That Sounds Like Other Indie possibilities? Set up that dual deck and start close listening...

It's metal, for cryin' out loud. If you try to innovate too much, your fans call you sell-outs and abandon you faster than a fat kid leaves fruit behind.

Don't take it so hard most music played on guitars electric or acoustic has a very narrow path to tread. Remember The Flaming Lips CD "Zaireeka", where you assembled your friends together with four stereos & played four different disc at the same time. Or that "Wizard O'Floyd Dark Side Of The Oz" Cd & VHS stoner party favorite. Hint, it works well with all sorts of combinations. I'll bet you wish you still had a boom box now.

above all else, how the fuck did this guy know/find these songs. I can't decide if i'm impressed or frightened.

There are alot of songs with the same chord progressions. For example,(I had to get my guitar out) Green Day "When I come around", Bush "Glycerine", Better than Ezra "Good" Blink 182 "Damnit" all have the progression F, C, D, Bflat.

Jesse,
There are about a hundred punk and punk-derived songs with that same chord progression. Half the songs by the Misfits take that progression, just in different keys. "Skulls" is one example. It's like the magic riff or something. So catchy.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Boards of Canada-'roygbiv'/Radiohead-'All I Need' yet. Stereogum can't make a Radiohead post without citing it.

The Strokes are quite good at this, actually: "Last Night" is a total rip off of Tom Petty's "American Girl" and "Razor Blade" is a total rip off of Barry Manilow's classic tear-jerker, "Mandy." I actually think the latter is kind of awesome...

Remember that song in Spaceballs when the Winnebago makes it's first appearance and we meet Barf and what's his name?
