MGMT Bring Thanksgiving To Paris

thumbnail icon: MGMT Bring Thanksgiving To Paris

Always up for making a/the scene, MGMT fully indulged their Thanksgiving performance of Oracular's spectacular "Kids" with some seasonal showmanship in this clip from French variety show Le Grand Journal. While I'm sure Parisians find ways to give thanks on a daily basis, they don't have a Thanksgiving Day with America's associated lore per se. So welcome our voweless cultural ambassadors, teaching the French about that first cold, hard winter and the generosity of a doomed native civilization by dressing as hipster pilgrims with a table of feasters in front, a Segway rider in back, and flanked by a swath of sexy, pug-toting Native Americans on one side with an artist capturing all the elements of the supper on the other. History is the best.

Fun. But what guys, no meta cornucopia?

Wow MGMT lip sings? This is sad. The vox are a little perfect. When perfect I mean the compression and sound is of studio quality. They can't get that kind of vocal sound on a tv set like that. Not cool

they aren't lip syncing they always play this song as their encore and they just play the track while the sing over it.

They don't usually perform like this. Look up their live performances on Jools Holland on Youtube.

How come they nevey play their instruments for this song? Is it because they're not talented? umm...I figured.

yeah, they did that at lolla and people thought it was lame. At a bloc party aftershow these canadians were making fun of them saying they had a tape recorder on stage with a mic next to it,.

I saw these guys open for Beck in MPLS a few months back. I've always dug their tracks but their live presence was even more anemic than I had been prepared for after reading reviews. Their entire set was devoid of energy from the whole crew and a pervasive sense of boredom was the only palpable sentiment I could see in their faces. I know Minneapolis isn't the center of the musical world but .. damn.

Kids was the worst of the lot too... I vividly remember the bassist and drummer standing around on stage just shooting the shit throughout the track, bored as hell and almost annoyed with the crowd. The entire song was sequenced or on a DAT with zero - ZERO - improvisation or tweaking, like they just pushed play and kicked back. Really. If I hear a stunning bassline and some vocals I expect a degree of interactivity that just wasn't present. I'm not sure if that was part of their schtick or what but, my god, it was depressing to see in person. My poor girlfriend looked crushed when she saw how uninterested the band seemed in her favorite song. Either way we had fun but if I wanted to hear the album cut at high volume I could've stayed home and cranked up the stereo.
