More people can identify Mike Patton than they can Wolfmother. I love how some people think just because Patton's not in a high-profile band that he isn't as famous as Wolfmother.
Go to any college campus and survey all the kids you can find--most of them will probably not only know Patton over Wolfmother, they can tell you all about his side projects and his work with John Zorn.

wolfmother = great...cover band.
Please, he's just saying what anybody with taste is thinking when they see them live.

Whoa I've never heard Patton talk normally.. I always thought his voice would be deeper.
To the haters, get out from under your pop rock and go pick up Peeping Tom, it should be accessible enough for you.

Mike Patton sucks

I don't think anyone is saying Wolfmother is so great...I'm well aware they're simply mimicking better 70's bands.
But come on, Faith No More? It wasn't good when it was 'popular'.

mike patton is fucking genius... but i didn't really like peeping tom.... i like fantomas and mr. bungle...

Bottom line, Mike Patton is responsible for nu-metal. This I cannot forgive.

50 years from now Mike Patton will still be remembered as being one of many inventive musicians of our time.
2 years from now, Wolfmother will be forgotten.
Score = 1
I'm in college and I have no idea who Mike Patton is. I do know who Wolfmother is. As '70s knockoffs, they're alright for what they are. I am definitely not under a "pop rock" of any kind either, so that can't be to blame. Afterall, I am here at Stereogum. I just don't know who the hell he is.
You do that campus survey. I'd like to see the results.

Don't get me wrong, i liked Faith No More. But come on, they are not that great. People know Faith No More, but not what the lead singers name is. I happen to enjoy Wolfmother and their old sound. For all you mike patton fanatics? what the hell? you think he is innovative. Bull. He didnt join Faith No More until 1988. The band had 2 albums that sounded the same before he joined.
Score = 0
i think mike is hilarious.
Score = 0
how can people hate mike patton? he IS innovative and he speaks the truth! wolfmother blows. i had to stop watching them at lollapalooza. the 70's called and want their black sabbath rip-off band back. let's get some taste, folks.
Score = 1
In the grand scheme of music history, both Mike Patton and Wolfmother are pretty irrelevant.
I did see Wolfmother's "Love Train" video in Champs Sports today. Strange place for a Wolfmother video.

i'd like to tell you all about my new band peeping wolf. we are like a cross between black sabbath and faith no more. actually, we sound more like wolf mother with mike patton-like vocals. our main goal is to bring the fans of wolfmother and mike patton together. thus, forcing everyone to rate us favorably if anyone happens to take a poll about us on a college campus. we also hope to one day play at lollapalooza. i think we will be a relevant band for years to come.
Score = 0
I'm not the biggest fan of Wolfmother. But at the same time, as far as "the kids" are concerned, I'd rather that's what they get into than some horrible nu-emo garbage. Listening to Wolfmother would likely lead a young, impressionable music fan down an influence trail that would eventually point to Sabbath and Zeppelin. But what would listening to Panic at the Disco or My Chemical Romance lead to? What informs the sound of that sort of band other than similar bland, mall-punk crap?
Score = 0
dillinger escape plan - irony is a dead scene. best cd ever.
Score = 0
i dont hate Wolfmother, but thats no reason to lie about Patton like that, he's still among the most innovative, and the fact that you can only bring up Faith No More to trash him shows how little you know about anything.. Fantomas, Tomahawk, General Patton vs. the X-Ecutioners, Mr. Bungle, his work on Bjorks acapella album, and on top of this running Ipecac records...
to quote Xtina - you think you know, but you have no idea.
Score = 0
Right, Patton's talking about recording an album of 60s Italian music with an ORCHESTRA, but he's trashing Wolfmother.
I KNOW who Mike Patton is, and if he had not been identified for me in that clip, my reaction to HIM would have been, who the fuck is this guy?
You're done Patton, and have been for a long time. Step aside.
Score = 0
oh please... i've never been in a famous band, and i think wolfmother sucks. i guess my opinion doesn't matter then?... ok, maybe not. still doesn't change the fact that trying to emulate or copy a 'retro' sound - without adding anything new or contemporary to it - amounts to a little more than empty shtick... posturing at best.
wolfmother blows. and no, they're not the darkness II. at least the darkness had a sense of humour about themselves.

I have friends who swear Patton is a God - but I don't believe them. Fantomas, Tomahawk, and esp. Mr. Bungle get a huge "meh". Over-Rated clap-clap---clap-clap-clap.
As for Wolfmother - sounds pretty good to me. What's wrong with covering what you like? I say more Sabbath, more Kyuss, more of anything that puts you in the basement with your friends staring at ESPN classics in a haze of sweet, sweet smoke. If it leads the "kids" to Fu Manchu, then god bless 'em.
Score = 0
everything is right with mike patton.

This is seriously silly stuff. Comparing these two acts is like comparing Madonna with Britney Spears. One has an on-going career, influences genres and fans, constantly re-invents him/her-self and has been in the business for years. Not to mention running a label, collaborating and recording with other hugely influential artists spanning from all genres and seemingly not giving a shit what any one thinks in the process. To say that the “kids” of today don’t know who Mike Patton is, is both irrelevant and bares little weight in ones artistic merit. Half the bands people mention on this board are unknowns in the big scheme of things. The day that I, or any of you for that matter, base tastes, interests and validity on numbers is the day you are lying to yourself and everyone else. If this is going to be based on something as shallow as popularity well it ends up being the same result anyway since one artist has sold millions of records in one incarnation or another while the other is new to the game. I don’t hate Wolfmother by any means but jumping on some one because they don’t like another band is pretty damn ironic coming from a hip blog msg board. We hate everything!
Score = 1
I remember seeing Faith No More, before their big "hit" open for the RHCP (in their first incarnation) at the Orpheum in Boston. They closed their set with not one, but two Black Sabbath covers.
Don't know Wolfmother; don't follow Patton's career. And while I tend to agree we with him, it's not like he was always on the vanguard.

People who only mention Faith No More need to do their research. Even disregarding Pattons numerous other projects, FNM's Angel Dust still blows away Wolfmother.
That being said, I can still get down to Wolfmother. I don't think they are changing the face of music or anything incredible, they just do a really good job of emulating bands of the past.

Not a surprising reaction from Mike. He has also griped about how terrible Rage Against the Machine was...a group that took obvious cues from Faith No More! That said, I'm in the "Mike will be remembered, Wolfmother will be forgotten" camp. Rock on, Mike...and keep putting out challenging records!
Score = 0
the reason woldmother sucks is not because their sound is retro, which it is. there are plenty of good bands who do basically the same type of thing and who actually rock. no, the reason wolfmother sucks is because they can barely hack their way through songs which contain one simple, repetetive riff. c'mon, man! that guy needs to practice. he is an incompetent guitar player. he has difficulty playing and singing at the same time. i mean, tony iommi would take some fucking SOLOS and just kill it.
Score = 0
mike patton - i'll give him a thumbs up for being innovative, but at some point that innovation needs to lead to something enjoyable to listen to. lovage was tolerable, i want to say tomahawk was tolerable as well, hated pretty much the rest of it.
the best thing faith no more ever did was the covers - theme song from midnight cowboy, easy - smart choices.
wolfmother is what it is - fun, big riffs, big hair, enjoyable enough. yeah, everyone will probably have forgotten them in a couple of years, but they don't suck by any means.

doesn't matter if he's right (yes) or wrong, it's fun to watch someone react that way.

wow, you people are so fucking ignorant. I've never seen a bunch of retards like on this site. Mike Patton is one of the greatest musicians of all time, he has influenced countless people during his career and has NEVER released any album that was sub-par. He will go on to be remembered for the rest of eternity. THAT's how great he is.
Then you have wolfmother who are trying (poorly) to be a Black Sabbath rippoff. They have one shitty album out, with one shitty single and all these amazing "college" kids think they know anything about music just cause they never heard of Mike Patton, yet know who Wolfmother is? Wow, you guys are so enlightened, you know of a shitty flavor of the month band, but you don't know about a prominent figure in the music industry who has been around for more than 15 years. No one cares about your stupid opinion, cause chances are, if you don't know who Mike Patton is you are ignorant.
Wolfmother sucks
Patton's numerous projects are all amazing. He is the greatest. He really knows how to rock. He has changed the music industry forever. He will never be forgotten. He is forever. If you don't like it, it just means you don't get it. Well, I get it buddy, and "it" is amazing. Anyone saying Patton is "washed up", or that his career is "over" needs to check out all the new albums he has released in the past years, and the many more to come.
The guy knows what's up, I mean, he married an Italian woman and learned the language, he knows that Italy is the greatest country in the world (and the World Cup champs of 2006) and he wanted to be a part of it. No man is smarter than Mike Patton.
Wolfmother doesn't have a chance to reach 5% of the greatness Faith No More achieved. And Mike Patton, well, he's untouchable

Listen ya little wankers, you shouldn't be on this site if you don't know who Patton is. He is only one of the geniuses that has influenced everything modern you listen to today. So fine, you don't know who he is but don't make an ass out of yourself by exposing the truth of your ignorance. Read a book, peruse a site, ask the door guy at your local venue. I mean c'mon! Do your homework.

I gotta join the Patton camp on this one. Mike Patton is incredibly talented, can and has worked in every genre, and runs one of the better indie labels around. Wolfmother... I like Sabbath too. Which is why I own Sabbath records.

Love Patton or hate him, you have to admit he's an artist. Wolfmother are jumping on the irony bandwagon. Something which Andrew WK does so much better. Plus, listening to them in that clip, I think Mike Patton was offended by the vocals,as was I. That voice is terrible.

Well, Lovage is a hip-hop project. And you might want to add this to your hipster scorecard; Vice magazine gave Fantomas's last album a ten.
Plus, Roddy Bottum - Faith No More's keyboard player-was in a great indie pop band in the '90's called Imperial Teen. Score another one for the indie scorecard: Pitchfork approves

Every fucking thread is always "ohhhh, my music versus yours". Fine, Mike Patton doesn't like Wolfmother. Hes probably pissed because he can't talk about all of his 'cool projects' while a band is tearing it up onstage. I'd be pissed too.
Ok, yeah, Wolfmother is Black Sabboth's bastard son. In case you haven't noticed all the kids today, guess what "SUPER-COOL RETRO" shirts they're all wearing? All the classic rock -- Zepplin, BS, ACDC, etc. What Wolfmother is doing is making cash, and if you can't respect that, you're an idiot. Cash is wonderful, and whether or not they'll be around in 3 years, they'll probably have more money, have been more famous, and fucked more chicks then you will.
Patton isn't a god, but he is pretty fucking cool. I'll admit, I haven't heard every project hes done, but whatever. I enjoy his music, probably wouldn't wanna hang out with him, he seems like a dick.

God Bless Patton for putting out good music to combat all of the Wolfmothers and the retread/cover bands of the world. That Wolfmother guy has the shittiest voice - such an earsore.
And somebody give Peter DiStefano a job! (and not one as Panic Channel's 2nd guitarist)

Ok, Mike Patton isn't as famous as he used to be, because he doesn't want to be.
Faith No More, at one time, was on top of the world.
They could have done what RHCP did, and sell out after they got popular, but FNM did the exact opposite, and made an album that was way ahead of it's time.
He could do a bunch of mainstream music, and be even richer than he is, but he'd rahter do what he wants to do.
I'd never heard of Wolfmother before I saw this, so I can't really talk about them, but from what I heard an infant crying> Wolfmother.

Patton turned down INXS when they asked him to be their singer.
Patton turned down Velvet Revolver when they asked him to be their singer.
Patton turned down Korn when they asked Peeping Tom to play the Family Values tour.
For all you Patton haters - when you've had the opportunity to turn down shit like that, and take the high road of making GOOD MUSIC over making QUICK CASH, then you can smack-talk Mr. Patton. Until then, you can suck it.
Did I mention that a REAL 70s rock band, the Who, asked Peeping Tom to open for them at 7 dates in the US and Canada? Mmm, yeah. Not so much with Wolfsabbath. I mean Ledmother. Or was that Creamother or Wolfyuss? I don't remember. It doesn't matter. They don't matter. Patton is acclaimed worldwide as a forward-thinking, diverse, multitalented, self-taught master of music. Wolfmother is widely regarded as simple, safe, easy, and nothing more than purposefully retro.
When you step out of the limelight on purpose, set up your own label, and put out exactly what you want without a bunch of corporate suits molding your image or telling you what to do and how to do it, then you can criticize Patton. Until then your arguments show you as uneducated, fad-following simpletons with no taste or perspective.
Cheers!

Reducing Mike Patton to his work with Faith No More is like thinking of Radiohead as the band that did "Creep." Sure, he may not have had huge commercial success with his later stuff, but it's always challenging, new music.

Alright, so I'm old. Big whoop.
This bitchiness sounds like high school, when the debate was whether Iron Maiden kicked Judas Priest's ass, or if AC/DC would beat the snot out of Ozzy. I haven't heard Wolfmother, nor am I really jonesing to. Peeping Tom is disappointing, primarily because that was the running title for the Patton / Zorn collaboration. This ain't that.
But Faith No More was more than the progenitor of nu-metal, Tomahawk is good stuff and Fantomas is really incredible in the field of experimental rock. I give Patton credibility points overall. Does his opinion ultimately influence me? Not really. Neither do the endless debates over who "rock" and who "suck". Hollow dismissal means very little without some factual claim support.
And Patton was on Sepultura's "Roots" album, so nyaaah nyaaah.
(And Pinetop Seven beats them all)

First of all, blaming a musician for a glut of rotten bastard children who cite them as an influence is ridiculous. Blaming Patton for Nu Metal is like blaming Bill Gates for internet stalkers.
Also, what's with the hate for FNM? Patton is largely responsible for their huge maturation between The Real Thing and Angel Dust. As for Mr. Bungle, they were incredible, end of story.
As for FNM playing Black Sabbath songs earlier in their career, Patton had nothing to do with it, and he's expressed a complete indifference towards the band several times.
I'm always surprised when people use a band or musician's popularity in an attempt to support their side or to invalidate the opposite end. Come on, ad hominem.
There was also a comment about how Wolfmother's shameless cash grabbing attempts were perfectly respectable. What is music even for if you're doing it for money. There's nothing wrong with making money if your integrity is intact, but if you're out there for a buck then you're not an artist, you're a performer and a monkey.

Patton's got a lot of b*lls criticizing anything considering the horrific music he's put out after Faith No More. For all you people proclaiming your hatred for Faith no More: Patton is much more than a one hit wonder. He has been in COUNTLESS ammounts of other bands, and has appeared with more artists than half of you fucks can count to. Fantomas, Peeping Tom, Tomahawk, Bungle, Lovage, Weird Little Boy, General Patton vs. the x-ecutioners, Adult Themes, Bjork, Dillinger Escape Plan, and the list fucking goes on. I've never listened to Wolf Mother, so I'm not going to bash them. I couldn't give a fuck less if they're the next big thing, or ALL YOU COOL COLLEGE Kids like them. Really. What does it matter if some kids at college like them, or not? And for college kids, they are pretty fucking stupid to not have at least heard of Patton. He may not be the next Fred Durst, but ya know what? Fucking good! Mike Patton is Mike Patton, and will continue to be Mike Patton for years to come. The man is an artist. An innovator. And to deny the obvious is just pathetic. Regardless if you like the mans work or not, it obviously takes some skill to put a record out. Really, who can dictate when a band sucks or not? (Patton!) But aside from that. We, as fans, have different tastes. I, myself, am into Avantgarde. Some guys like Emo...But our musical difference means nothing, aside that our taste differs. The only music that truly sucks, doesn't exist. And even then, silence can be the most beautiful thing. Like this damn debate..Really needs to be silenced.

Oh shut up you idiot. No one here hates Faith No More, or at least most don't. If we hated Faith No More we wouldn't even know who Mike Patton was. Most of us dislike, or let me rephrase that "most humans who've heard the music he's made after Faith No More think it's crap". Besides Faith No More, the only good album he's made was his first Mr. Bungle album. After that everything was ruined (pun intended).
The fact that he's played with all those ridiculous bands no one's even heard of doesn't make him a good musician. It's also stupid how he whores himself around with all those (very unknown) gay bands with stupid names. If he stuck with one band he'd maybe make some listenable music again. Anyone who likes his music is GAY.

I like Mike Patton's work for the most part, and there is no doubt he started and immediately shunned many trends. He is a brilliant musician and composer, unquestionably. Having said that, I heard of Wolfmother from Ferall on Sirius and searched out their music. I recognize all of their influences and I like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Pink Floyd and ELP. I understand Wolfmother is popular worldwide, but they came to Orlando last night(I was there) and tickets were still available until the day of. All of you rock snobs are hating on a group because they are bound for greatness and it will give you a head start on hating them. Wolfmother has no pretensions and come to rock and put on a show. A couple of years ago that douche from Godsmack said Jack White was ruining rock and roll, no reason given, he was just ruining it, and this is what Mike Patton sounds like. Shame such a brilliant mind would focus on HATING another band. Most of you think that a band is only cool until someone actually hears them and masses of people like them. Marxist Bullshit. If someone sits down with nothing but profit in their mind, they're not going to sound like Wolfmother. 3 Doors Down, yes. Creed, yes. Dave Matthews, yes. Wolfmother just sounds like a group that wants to play heavy and hard and get laid at the end of the night by many hot chicks. They are sexual, evil, doomy and nostalgic.
Fuck any of you, Mike Patton included, that spew cynicism just to try and prove to yourself you're not trendy and you're some kind of musical conniseur. If he wants to sell records, reunite Faith No More. Otherwise he should keep making obscure, progressive music and those of us who don't read Rolling Stone or Spin or watch MTV will support him because he is a musical genius. And then those of us who just want to rock sometimes will also support Wolfmother and Jack White and respect you if you don't.

Hey I'm not a Wolfmother fan but they sound good. Of course it sounds like classic rock Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath, but who cares since rock has been dead for how many years now? Better than nothing. The music channels don't know what to play so all they do is play hip-hop. And the rock stations don't know what new stuff to play either so they keep playing old stuff like Nirvana or whatever. My gripe with Wolfmother is the singer's appearance and the video they made for their hit single. Does he really think he's in the 70's? Does he really think it looks cool?
Wolfmother probably isn't even aware Mike Patton still exists so it doesn't matter. No one cares. He can say whatever he wants, he has been lost into obscurity. If you told Wolfmother "hey the former lead singer of Faith No More Mike Patton dissed you on tv" they would probably get offended but probably wouldn't even know that he makes music 1,000 times worst than them now. They'd probably go "who the hell is he to criticize us!!". In the clip Mike Patton says they suck almost like he's still in a top band like Faith No More. Not like he's one of the worst artists the world has ever seen. Ok, one of the worst artists that used to be in a great band the world has ever seen. I don't know if that clip showed up on tv (is that "thee" G4 channel, I didn't know they covered music).
Patton deserves to be in the Guiness Book of World Records for how many collaborations he's been in and bad unlistenable music he's made. The only reason he even gets an interview is because he was once the singer for Faith No More. Like FNM's drummer Mike Bordin once said "he can collaborate with all the bands he wants, but he will always be known as the former lead singer of Faith No More". hahaha
