Neko Case Unleashes Her Middle Cyclone On Interface

thumbnail icon: Neko Case Unleashes Her Middle Cyclone On Interface

"Unleash" might seem like the wrong word for Neko Case's classy, countrified sounds, but even though a couple of these performances are muted and she's only joined by one other vocalist and an acoustic guitarist, when she tilts her head back and belts it out, you imagine she could be heard over even the biggest of storms (or, in more musical terms, a Glenn Branca Guitar Army). We've seen plenty of live performance's of material from Case's sixth album, sure, and there's a reason why -- the woman really can sing. Broken record. See:

"Don't Forget Me"

"Middle Cyclone"

She also did the recently animated "People Got A Lot Of Nerve." You can watch that, along with some interview footage, over at Spinner.

Middle Cyclone is out via ANTI-.

and some dark-ass roots!!!

I kid.

Neko Case is one of the best things about being alive. She is pretty, funny and sings great. However, I don't think her lyrics get enough wttention, which is a shame because she is really good. I know she does a lot of covers and didnt write a lot of the older material, but the stuff that she HAS written is frustratingly good without ever being over-written.
People talk about Conor Oberst and I wonder if they have ever bothered paying attention to "Outro with Bees" "Margaret vs. Pauline" or "This Tornado Loves You"

Thats not to say shes better than Oberst in particular or that there is anything wrong with that kid's output. I just think there is a lot to be said for Neko's economy and subtlety that can get missed.

Sure she is pretty and she sings great, but that bitch can write too.

Behind "Pharaohs" those are my two favorites off Middle Cyclone. Can't wait until next Monday night.

She's not the greatest lyricist but her voice and music make up for it. She was the best parts of the New Pornographers and she knows it.

wha?........her lyrics aren't great? I think she could maybe have left off a few of the weaker tracks on the last few albums, but when she is good she is great and beautifully poetic

I really agree. She uses such an amazing juxtaposition between nature and violence. It is kind of of bummer that women are not more often recognized for more than being beautiful and having pretty voices,.
