New Against Me! Video - "Stop!"

Released in time for the US Presidential Election, Against Me!'s video for "Stop!" reminds us to think wisely about what's important, but also of Kurt & Co.'s "In Bloom," at least in its black and white, camera-mugging cheesy TV thing. Sitting on a couch, the AM! boys alternate between hating those televised images (they toss food, whip out the baseball bats) and rocking along to the SPIN, Ben Lee, and Springsteen-approved sounds.

Not one our favorite New Wave tunes, but a fun video. Is the TV host the guy who plays the pink-suited bully/warmonger in "White People For Peace"? You know, AM! played "Stop!" on a real TV show (Letterman), but the video seems to have been stripped off the web. Anyone? Anyhow, the last couple Against Me! videos have been label montages, so it's nice to get an official turn. Plus, it always good to see the smiley drummer. Is that guy ever sad?

New Wave is out on Sire.

I love this song. It's one of my faves from the cd. Considering how much grief Gabel knew he was going to get by signing with a major, the content is a nice insight into that frustrating decision. Replete with the dreams of superstar rock band success there is also the fact that they would be shunned by the very fans that made them who they are.
Sound Opinions from Chicago made some great points about this album, in particular the name, New Wave. Sire records being the big label in question was also the label that coined the phrase "New Wave" in the late 70's. In order to sell punk to radio stations that were afraid of the word.
Gabel seems to know that, as well as he knows the ramifications of a big label jump. The cover colors being black, yellow and white....these are also the colors the label used.
Smart song, smart band. They also knew that just when you might be thinking, "Jesus, I get the point already", to end the album. 33 minutes. Nice.

i doubt if anyone remembers Cinema Beer Goggles on here (much less lived by it back in the day), but i wonder if similarities between 10 Foot Poles "broken bubble" video on there and this video were an intentional homage or just another punk band tapping into a suburban oversoul.

Also: Completely embarrassing song.

Also: Does anyone else think it's hilarious that that's Pignuts from the Scams?

yeah, that's Paddy from Dillinger Four. for those of you who don't know Dillinger Four, go listen to "doublewhiskeycokenoice" and you might recognize that opening riff from a certain grammy winning song and album.

p.s. does anybody get the notion that the guys know that this is the worst song on the record, thus totally mocking themselves and their letterman appearance in the video?

p.s.s. best live band around right now? yes.

I loved Cimina Beer Goggles and Beer Nuts. I totally forgot about that Ten Foot Pole song, but now I am going home to find it.
Thanks

@bearface: re:ps. - man i hope so. re: pss - definitely. the only reason i get bummed out about how popular they've gotten is that they've outgrown the venues they rule so completely. seeing them at music hall of williamsburg was kind of a shock; still good, but man...

@kidgotham: that ten foot pole song is totally rad. about ten years ago me and my buddies went on a road trip from new orleans to austin to see them play over easter break... we got to the venue and it turned out it was 30 Foot Fall, not Ten Foot Pole. J Church, played though, so in retrospect it was worth it.

Music Hall of Williamsburg? How bout Terminal 5? And now they're on an arena tour. I remember seeing them at the original Common Grounds in Gainesville in 2002.

Moving up the modern rock chart after a shaky start.
