New Animal Collective - "My Girls"

thubmnail icon: New Animal Collective - "My Girls"

We've heard the Merriweather Post Pavilion version of "Brother Sport." Now, as the Pavilion leaks, it's time for "My Girls"'s shimmering, windblown group harmonies about not needing much: "I don't mean to seem like I care about / material things like a social status / I just want four walls and adobe slats for my girls." For now you can hear at icantfly (via You Ain't No Picasso). We'd listened to a snippet of the track earlier; this time, make sure to keep your ears peeled for the entire thing, because it goes somewhere by simply adding layers (and repetitions) to the vocal round. You may remember that from Coachella. If not, here's something to jog the memory:

Maybe "My Girls" is the counterpart to Panda's "Bros." Right, Carles?

Merriweather Post Pavilion is out 1/20 via Domino.

Couldn't you print the correct lyrics? "I don't mean to seem like I care about / material things like a social stats / I just want four walls and adobe slabs for my girls."

Hah, too bad you're wrong too. It's "adobe SLATS". I love when that happens!

But anyways, this song is friggin' amazing.

A social stats? What? "Status" or "stance" sound a lot more like what they're saying.

Ugh. Lennox has outgrown the dork in the hat. Tare is a drag on the sound and a complete distraction. His contribution doesn't do much to serve the song here.

Yes, I am listening to it, and I've listened to countless performances of the song available on the net. And once again, I'm listening to Avey Tare destroying another otherwise perfectly pleasant song that he didn't write, beginning principally with his contributions around the 3 minute mark of the track.

If anything, Avey's vocals need to be turned UP especially in the chorus.

Tasteful 80's... Eurythmics "Here Comes the Rain Again." Even better 80's pop Fleetwood Mac's "Hold Me". It's Chris's song and yet it's even more Lindsey's because of the insanely powerful production. Both LB and AC have spent there time with "smiley smile" that's for sure. If you listen closely to "Getting Hungry" you could almost swear Stevie Nicks is in the mix...

Amrit, You must publicly perform fellatio on me while apologizing and saying "I'm SO SO sorry I posted about an ANIMAL COLLECTIVE SONG MR. SHERIFF"--it's ok if the words are muffled while you are choking on my cock. If you fail to perform this act on me I will sue your ass.

I think Avey's voice needs to be turned up!
He's also doing a different harmony on the chorus, from what he was doing in the earlier live sets. I prefer the older harmony's.
I also prefer the piano sample from the live sets, rather than this synth.
But all in all it's still a remarkable song, I've just come to enjoy their previous arrangements

I agree. Just from these two songs, it's surpassed anything that could possibly come out next year. I mean, not that I'm not hoping people attempt to outdo them.
Fuck, I could see January 2009 being better than 2008 as a whole. (I like 2008)

Not a bad track. Noah Lennox has such a great voice... I just can't help thinking I would be much more into them in general if they would drop the stupid gimicky names and just go by their normal ones. It is hard to take a guy who calls himself Panda seriously. I know this will probably be perceived as sacrilegious because of the aura that Animal Collective has, but seriously, doesn't that pretentious little detail bother anyone else?

It took a little while, but the studio version of this has finally grown on me. I love the way the vocals were recorded. And to all who are bashing Avey, (of course you are entitled to your opinion) you realize that the verses wouldn't be what they are with out his and Panda's call and response style singing. Also, I love the wooooos he does in the middle and at the end to accent the symbel crashes. That makes the song ten times mor fun. Also he wrote a lot of good material for this record. In The Flowers, Summertime Clothes, Taste... quality music in my opinion. That's what I've always liked about AC, Panda Bear's pop stylings are counterbalanced by Avey's less palitable music sensibilities. Not to mention the contributions of Geo and Deackin. And as long as I'm rambling, I don't see how people can say SJ was the bands most accessible record. It's texture is so strange and uneven. Feels was poppier than that album in my opinion. Besides, MPP could be the new recipiant of that tital, but it also might be their most athearial work.

this may be my favorite AC record. and previously my favorite was the original Avey and Panda LP. It has some elements from that melody wise, but much more "tight" I was not really into the hippy dippy chant phase, so I guess I like the electronic leanings on this one. "my girls" will be a fav of 2009, I'm sure. also, "My Girls" seems a bit "dubsteppy" to me. The half time swing but around 110bpm thing.

What are adobe slats anyway!!!!!!? Adobe (software) platforms?

Also, sounds like they sing stats, but all lyrics I found have status.... :)
