New Arctic Monkeys Video - "Crying Lightning"

thumbnail icon: New Arctic Monkeys Video - "Crying Lightning"

Hype Machine non-casualties Arctic Monkeys enlisted Josh Homme to produce their third LP, and you can feel the QOTSA frontman's deft touch (nullus) in the sludgy psychedelia of this first single. Its video is appropriately dark and stormy, with the newly shaggier foursome rocking out on a cramped CGI ghost ship. The clip premiered tonight on UK Channel 4 and on YouTube immediately after. Apparently Arctic Monkeys fans are Web-savvy.

Humbug is out 8/25 via Domino. The band's first US gig in almost two years happens at All Points West next weekend.

Ah, those guys are so cool. I always knew they could light their own instruments by merely floating around.

Doesn't it feel great when a band that comes out with such amount of hype is... well... actually pretty good? Probably the only hype band of this past decade that has managed to stay afloat.

I give you my thumbs up and my ears are waiting for your new stuff.

Remember when everyone was like "Arctic Monkeys are the new Beatles?" I like Arctic Monkeys more.

As a fan of their first two albums and a Josh Homme fan.

This is going to be fucking great.

Love this song but thought the video would be more of a james bond thriller with bombs and action. This is a weird video but I know I will grow to love it. Can't wait for their album.

What a great song. I thought that after the last album they were doomed like most British bands to re-record the same album for the rest of their career. This is a step forward.

Why do I always get a Harry Potter vibe from these guys? Oh that's right they're ridiculously British.
That's a very good song and it deserved a better video.

Unimaginative Director#1 "Let's put the band on a boat and throw buckets of water at them!"
Unimaginative Director #2 "Ya, and then add giant images of them playing their instruments cause that makes so much sense, ya?
Unimaginative Director #1: Ya!

Decent song. But i'm afraid the video director took a bit too much peyote out in the desert.

Is this video directed by Richard Ayoade?

I wouldn't be surprised if it is as it has a distinct Mighty Boosh/Garth Marenghi feel to it. Think Old Gregg on black lake...

Anyone know?

Yeah it was directed by ayoade, i saw the behind the scenes of this video, they said the point was to "fuck" with peoples heads. I think they missed the mark though

Always respected these guys since they blew up because of their disdain of their own over-hype. Figured they'd stay alive.

that boat is real!

love them. love the sexy undertones. its about a girl who puts up a front(crying lightning) to scare away guys. but its not "half as impossible as everyone assumes" to get past all that.

If Ennio Morricone and Julian Casablancas were from Sheffield and had musical children they would sound like this. namely the best thing of the year so far.

eh. their first album is pretty by-the-numbers british post-libertines indie rock and they kinda keep going downhill from there. i still the first album a fair amount, but this shit sucks.

meh screw the credits i love this new progression in their sound...defends their case against the one-trick-pony slander. the video's wicked fun, reminds me of a delacroix painting...sure they're not reinventing the sound spectrum but if you could just let go of your hyper-elite musical morals that don't permit you to suffer anything unless it's the flagship of a new sub-genre, then you could potentially just enjoy listening to this track

I'm old Greeegggggg.

I thought this song was very boring. Psychedelia is so hot right now, though. As the display case at Macy's will tell ya': it's the summer of love.

I like the new song. This is a nice break from their older sound, so I find it refreshing. Also, I found another link to the video in case anyone's getting a copyright restriction message:

The video is pretty ridiculous, but the song sounds promising. I'm looking forward to this, which is odd, because I never really used to give a toss about these boys.

Loved the Robert Quine-esque shitty anti-solo towards the end. Reminded me a bit of a similar one in the Hives' "Diabolic Scheme."

It's weird when a band is produced by someone way less talented than the bad he's producing.
