New Beck - "Modern Guilt" (Live @ The Echo)

thumbnail icon: New Beck - "Modern Guilt" (Live @ The Echo)

Last night Beck did in L.A. what he loves to do in L.A., hitting the Echo (or, Echoplex) for a "secret show" and work through some rarities -- in this case, stuff from the out-any-day-now Modern Guilt. According to LA Weekly (via TDS), it was a "not-quite-packed" affair which featured some reworkings, like a My Bloody Valentine-y (yes, they are everywhere) fuzzed-up take on Sea Change's spare and broken ballad "Lost Cause," as well as the debut of new tunes including "Gamma Ray," "Replica," and the title track from Mr. Hansen's new Danger Mouse-stamped LP. So here, a first listen to "Modern Guilt," thanks to our L.A.-based YouTube Samaritan:

Not as radical as the psychedelic Caribouisms of "Chemtrails," but definitely in line with that "overall 1960's British vibe" early listeners have tagged the LP with. That coda feels like some good Zombies stuff, or maybe even a slowed down take on Simon & Garfunkel's "Hazy Shade Of Winter" (yep that one that the Bangles covered). I'm sure more from the show will pop up today, so we'll update the post as we find 'em.

Definitely has a 60's vibe to the whole performance but sill manages to sound fresh, so kudos to Beck.

The Other Matthew

Since when is there a lady-folk in Beck's band? Did he lose someone? Oh noes!

Sounds good. Anyone have video/audio of the new Lost Cause?

The outro has a Turtles, "Happy Together" kind of vibe. Very excited for the record. And like everyone else, I'd love to see/hear that new version of "Lost Cause."

Everytime I see or hear new beck, I think back to futuarama when bender calls beck a "musician who transends genres even as he reinvents them", and think , how true.

Actually, that outro sounds like a straight lift from Savior Machine by Bowie on the Man Who Sold The World album. Or one of those songs. I'm old now.

This new stuff sounds fantastic. I totally expected a soft album, as his pattern typically goes, but I'm glad he's surprising us yet again.

But dude's looking like someone dressing up as Beck for Halloween in 1995.
