New Black Kids Video - "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You"

You have to figure this was the one band least envious of the Vampire Weekend hypestorm. While both sides of the Atlantic were lavishing praise on the young Columbia grads, the even younger Jacksonville Kids were able to enjoy a few moments in the shade and out of the scorching spotlight scrutiny. Which gave everyone enough time to pause and remember, hey, "I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend..." is a really fun song. Well we hope they enjoyed their time out, because with this video, the proper Almost Gold push (i.e. so long, free MySpace demos) is on. This is a re-recorded version of the song you know -- a little sturdier in the rhythm section, a little brighter in the mix -- and the video's colors and cheerleaders makes good on all those cheer-core tags the track got back around CMJ. The clip's a tad scattered -- it's a visual hodgepodge of powdered wigs, neon shadows, and literal lyric illustrations (two left feet, represented by ... two left feet) but they are still kids, after all.

The single is out 4/7 on Almost Gold.

dude's vocals need some serious j-lo-ing.

I dug that. the video is visually pleasing and captures the goofiness of the band and the song pretty well. It looks like the band isn't taking themselves too seriously, but I do think this is their stab at a much wider audience. surprisingly high production values. Someone's putting serious money behind them.

His lip syncing was pretty poor, though. almost ruins the fun.

I really luv the track and am not (yet) part of the backlash, but this video is some Cheetah Girls shit.

Other than the not-quite-right lip syncing, I liked the video. All the colors and excitement and movement fit the song very well. And what a good song. Super-catchy, yet not in a bad way. Definitely a dance-party song.

i felt like i was watching 120 minutes. you know, back when it had credibility. the band has that not-ready-for-primetime we can't act thing going on which i think is endearing. and i find i enjoy the song more now that the sound quality is cleaned up. i'm excited to hear more from this band.

The very literal imagery is also reminiscent of old MTV. Also, I like that little Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge moment at the end. I dig it, but I actually kind of prefer the version of the song with the vocals more buried. Hopefully, they can live up to all this hype when they finally release an album.

ahahahah. the music video is so terrible, but the best part was the pew pew pew! gun lazers.

I assume this is the "professionally done" mix of the song. Don't like it. At all. His vocals start getting annoying less than a minute into it.

The video itself? Cheesy, really.

The song still works for me. This video, however, does not. The lack of a solid concept, or any real direction with a talented band and hefty budget is pretty disappointing.

It would take a lot to make me NOT love this song. It's one of the best pop singles in years. Bernard Butler brought the demo out of the murky waters and he knows the drummer seems to be the talented on in the group, BUT I think it was a mistake to not keep the Robert Smith impression vocals. The screeching added a great texture to the song and actually made the vocal sympathetic in its brattiness. Video is cute, I mean unless you have animal head bicycle guys scaring you in a one take, who cares about videos today?
