New Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - "Telling The Truth And Going Away"

thubmnail icon: New Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - "Telling The Truth And Going Away"

From being one of Fallon's first music guests to telling us that rumors of their demise have been greatly exaggerated, the Class of '05 music industry case study that is Clap Your Hands Say Yeah have been somewhat on the scene this year. Still, less than expected: It was fair to think The Great Buck Howard -- the Tom Hanks/John Malkovich movie in which CYHSY were performing/starring as themselves -- would be the next watershed moment for them. except that apparently that movie was so terrible we barely knew it was released and it's already on On Demand where I've been told I should not watch it, because it should not be watched ever. Anyway Clap wrote some new songs for the film, one of which they performed over the closing credits. It's a mid-tempo strummer that's somehow registers both as promisingly melodic and fairly lifeless, or maybe that's just the camera editing and vibe carrying over from the movie's doomed shoot. Anyway, Tom Hanks's son makes a cameo.

Thanks Matt for the tip! New Clap Your Hands music is happening, of that we've been assured; we're just not sure when.

I'm pretty neutral about this band, but I'm always surprised to learn they're still around. Best of luck guys, I guess. The song's pleasant.

There is just no energy in this song at all. I understand that it is a downtempo track, but they are playing and singing like they just downed horse tranquilizers.

To tell you the truth, i wish you'd go away.

I saw the movie and I liked it. I thought it was cleverly done and smartly humorous.

Also, after seeing this part of the song, I scoured the internet to find an audio recording of the song. I did find it as a studio recording and I think it is one of the best CYHSY songs available. I highly recommend trying to find it over listening to this version from the movie. It is far more lively and well produced.

I'm pretty sure they didn't write this song specifically for the movie; I have a copy of Alec Ounsworth performing it solo several years ago. Not sure if it is the same version Doyle refers to above, but I definitely prefer it to the version in the clip.

The linked version from Alec above is the version I was referring to. When I got it, i was told it was the band. I do see that the link shows it otherwise. It sounds like a full band playing the song however. Regardless, it is good.

This is their best song since their debut album, most definitely.

They better not mess this one up when they record it like they did with track "Some Loud Thunder".

They did record this.

This is not a live recording done for a film, listen to the slide guitar and the effects going on with it, in the video they're lip syncing to a studio recording they previously made.

Either way, I didn't care for this one way or the other the first time hearing it, but on second listen it's actually sounding pleasant. It'd make a good track 8 to an 11 song album.

Careful, amrit. I read Stereogum for frank but fair music review and commentary. Severely bashing a film you have never seen and plan never to see and overtly linking the band the article is supposed to be about to the bashing? That reeks of Pitchfork-like bias and ineptitude.
