New Flaming Lips Video - "Borderline" (Madonna Cover)

If 2008 was about band reunions, 2009 seems to be the year of high-profile compilations. A new entry into the Dark Was The Night/Heroes mix is the dramatically titled Covered, A Revolution in Sound, meant to celebrate Warner Bros. 50th Anniversary. It's unclear if Michelle Branch handling Joni Mitchell or Adam Sandler doing Neil Young constitutes a revolution in sound, but Flaming Lips' heavily psychedelic and percussive take on "Borderline" is at least fun (thanks for the tip, Joey). It's also good for morale to see Coyne vocalizing more than his hatred of Arcade Fire. You can watch the guys make like Madonna -- with Coyne's nephew's band Stardeath and White Dwarfs -- after the jump.
And, if you're curious about what else is on Covers, here's the track list:
01 Flaming Lips with Stardeath and White Dwarfs - "Borderline" (Madonna)
02 The Black Keys - "Her Eyes Are a Blue Million Miles" (Captain Beefheart)
03 Michelle Branch - "A Case of You" (Joni Mitchell)
04 Against Me! - "Here Comes a Regular" (the Replacements)
05 Missy Higgins - "More Than This" (Roxy Music)
06 James Otto - "Into the Mystic (Van Morrison)
07 Adam Sandler - "Like a Hurricane" (Neil Young)
08 Taking Back Sunday - "You Wreck Me" (Tom Petty)
09 Mastodon with Billy Gibbons - "Just Got Paid" (ZZ Top)
10 The Used - "Burning Down The House" (Talking Heads)
11 Disturbed - "Midlife Crisis" (Faith No More)
Covered, A Revolution In Sound is out via Warner Bros.

I could care less about the Lips and lost all respect for Wayne after his Arcade Fire diss. I'm with Final Fantasy on this one and could care less for a drug culture demagod who probably needs a high in order to pull off his happy hippie-nicest guy in the world attitude.
Score = -25
Actually, I met Wayne in the Dublin airport a few years back and he's a pretty nice guy, especially given the fact that I don't look like the stereotypical lips fan. Feel free to critique is public opinions, but he seemed genuine to me. I'd rather pay someone like that for music than Fifty-Cent.
Score = 1
Wow! That album looks awesome! (It does not look awesome). Hey Wayne, here's an idea, instead of talking shit about other bands and participating in terrible covers albums, how about writing a new FLips record.
Score = 6
dude's been sober for years...also, the used covering talking heads...guuuuuh

I take back everything I've ever said about the Flaming Lips. That was epic. Amazing. I am at a loss for words. Wayne's voice never sounded so lovely... one of my fave tracks of 2009 for sure.
Hey, it's almost worth buying what I'm sure will be a shitty album (I have a hard time giving money to something with Disturbed on it).
Score = 5
I enjoyed the crap out of that.
Wayne, Keep bringing the fun.

Amaaaaaaaaazing.
To the dimwit that attempted to use the diss "drug culture demagod ((sic) it's demigod, you twit. i mean you are typing into a computer with a free dictionary and spellcheck). Anyhow why don't you throw out every piece of music that drugs had some involvement with and you'll be left with a Jordi single. I need a cocktail. Waiter!
Score = 0
Are you serious? EVERYONE involved in making ANY Jordi song was CLEARLY on drugs LOL! Dur dur d'etre un bebe!
ANYWAY...covers tend to suck but this one really works. Great job Lips, you guys owned that song. Now all the world needs is for Gwen Stefani to die so she can stop butchering classic 80s tunes by "covering" them!
Score = 1
Simply the best.
Score = 2
Even shitty songwriting crumbles under the awesome sonic weight of the flaming lips; this is amazing. They are this generation's pink floyd.
Score = 4
TAKE THAT BACK!

Flaming Lips FOR THE WI... waaait a miinute!
Score = 1
INcredible. Grab some headphones for full effect...
Score = 0
This is good. I really don't think it matters what bands say about other bands. Although I know there are a lot of dbag hipsters who don't give Lips credit. Get over it. Tunes are tunes....this one is good.
Score = 1
Who gives a crap what Wayne Coyne thinks of The Arcade Fire :( I was actually quite disappointed when Coyne retracted his statement about them, as much as I love The Arcade Fire, myself. People were such pussies over it... god forbid Coyne should state a fucking opinion, now ALL RESPECT IS LOST and he had to give an apology he probably didn't even mean just to get everyone's panties untwisted. Give me a break. ANYWAY - I've been waiting for this video for awhile -- it rocked me. It rocked me good.
