New Jenny Lewis - "The Next Messiah"

thumbnail icon: New Jenny Lewis - "The Next Messiah"

In preparation to drop Acid, Jenny's been posting some not very amusing sketches to YouTube, featuring Ben Gibbard, Jonathan Rice, and actual music from the LP. So, yes "The Next Messiah"'s special sketch involves Ben Gibbard in a closet with a bunch of pink heart-shaped balloons that have Acid Tongue inscribed upon them. After that gets over with, you'll hear the song, which is far away from the gentle country and choral backings of the title track. Instead it's a stomping (and later, funky) southern blues-rock bit with slide guitars and lots about Jenny's daddy ("he was a chancer" and a bouncer and, of course, the next messiah).

Strong shift at 5:17 and if you haven't yet, you can hear "Acid Tongue." Here's the DL.

that's not two songs. there's just a change at 5:17 into another movement. it's pretty clear it's not two songs, because toward the end of the recording she starts going back into the "next messiah" stuff.

even though i did enjoy the title track, i can't help but still feel jenny lewis and the rest of her friends in rilo kiley are nothing but opportunistic genre thieves only capable of replicating what has come before rather than doing anything even a little unique.

you're fucking ridiculous. every artist takes from their influences, but if you think JL and RK are exactly replicating their influences then you must not have heard them.

"[Ben Gibbard], please come out of the closet."

I kid. That dude's not a player but he totally crushes a lot.

I love Jenny, but... those sketches are very unfunny. Blake got all the humor in Rilo KIley.

It's like the middle of nowhere tour. She needs to come to Seattle! I was *this* close to driving to Colorado, but I'll just be getting back from Tucson...

Alan Knut?

Blake is possibly the un-funniest thing I've ever come across...

looks like Jenny is ditching the sweet harmonies of her last LP RFC in favor of a grittier sound. Couldn't be more fitting, or any less awesome.

Epic.

Those sketches are so not funny. They're the kinds of things your gf would make thinking is really good but you'd have to feign interest in or else.
