New John Vanderslice Live Video - "Kookaburra"

Tomorrow marks the release of blog-beloved indie rock troubadour John Vanderslice's latest LP Emerald City, and JV's celebrating the record with a show of love back to the blogosphere, premiering live vids of his entire album via ceremonial lap of his daily reads. John had this to say about the project and his affair with the internet:

My breakfast is so blog-heavy. It's me, a bowl of granola, and my hot-rodded G3 doing the rounds every morning. It's how I learn about great new bands and records, and it's made feel a very real connection to the music community in a way which I feared might be vanishing all together.

Why not pay the internet back? Why not record the new record played live at Tiny Telephone, showcasing the many talents of my band mates, and providing free love to very worthy fans and blogs I adore? Done and done!
Recorded entirely in said all-analog studio in San Francisco's Mission District, the virtual tour has been dubbed "Emerald City: Live From Tiny Telephone," and fittingly, it starts at the start -- with the scene-setting opening track "Kookaburra."

Or click here for the vid in bigger and more beautiful format. There's more virtual trek to come, of course -- take the jump for the slate of John's tour stops and album stream info.

From here, the Vanderslice blog express stops at, in no particular order, You Ain't No Picasso, My Old Kentucky Blog, Brooklyn Vegan, Gorilla Vs. Bear, Catbird Seat, Six Eyes, An Aquarium Drunkard, and Chromewaves. Check in with those sites for more tour in the coming days, and stream Emerald City in its excellent entirety at MySpace. The record's out 7/24 on Barsuk. There won't be any tour shirts, but if you need a souvenir, grab "White Dove" MP3 here.

Derek, if he looks bored I would guess it is because he is focused. This is the actual recording of the track for the record, they did the whole thing live like this. Nobody wants to be the band member that causes the whole take to be blown in the name of looking like you're having a good time. That's just my guess, though.

WTG: That is not actually the recording of the track for the record, as this footage was shot about a month ago.

The entire promotion behind "Emerald City" has been bungled from the start. They lopped the two best songs off of the record with no explanation a month before the release date, not to mention standing firm on releasing the putrid "Time To Go" as a first single.

Now Vanderslice is retrying the same "live video for each song" format that didn't work out for Sloan the last time around. I'd say JV had a better shot at this if the "Emerald City" songs were interesting in a live format. Unfortunately... not so much. Better luck next time.

I recently was introduced to JV by WERS radio from emerson College in Boston...wow!!!!!!!!!!I can't stop listening to his stuff...the words, the rhytms?, the note stretching, the harmonies, the incredible percussion things going on...he and his band are amazing.
