New Linkin Park Video - "What I've Done"
You probably like Linkin Park about as little as we do, but we're always curious about what the kids will be listening to. And since the irritating rap-rockers have a new album coming out that most assuredly will debut at #1, we thought we'd show you what they're up to, just so you're a well-informed hater. Clearly this is the band's attempt at a Very Important Video -- unless the images of 9-11, Gandhi, Castro, Saddam, the KKK, and melting glaciers are meant to be ironic. Wait do they have irony in nü-metal? 'Cause that would explain a lot.

I'm a fan of Linkin Park's other albums. Not this.
This is the best they could come up with in 4 years? It's as if they are trying to streamline their sound by stripping out everything interesting. Mr. Hahn gets narrowly a memorable scratch in, and Shinoda is relegated to that guitar melody. I'm wondering what six people are going to do on stage with essentially four parts. And then the cheesefest video is just shit-icing on the shit-cake.

I agree! Apparently most of you don't know much about Linkin Park. That's ok, just don't post and act like you do. Mike Shinoda ("the rapper guy") has always played guitar for the band and does so in several songs when they're on stage, so it was of no surprise to me to see him playing in this video. There are several songs on their other albums where Chester sings all or most of the song, so this song isn't any different in that regard, so the comment about talking to producers about not having Shinoda rap doesn't make sense. Finally, LP has always been a band that takes on all sorts of issues in their music and videos. They've volunteer for disaster relief efforts and have already played at Music for Relief and Live 8, so for them to headline a Live-Aid type concert this year (as stated in a previous post) would only stay true with what they have stood for and done in the past.
Yes, the video could have been better...as an LP fan I would love to hear more screaming and something heavier for the first release off the new album, but overall it's not terrible and I'll definitly still be buying the new album.

I've been a semi-fan of Linkin Park during their career... I've seen ups and downs of their productions. I think Chester has a great voice, though Linkin Park rarely puts it to any actual use with all the angst they poorly portray through Chester's clenched teeth.
As far as Mike Shinoda goes... he's a musical genius who can't rap worth a fuck. Simple as that. I think Mike Shinoda has a strong ear for melody and presents fairly creative musical concepts. Effectively crafting these concepts into final products, however, has not always proven to be his strong point. Personally, I think Mike tends to get caught up in cramming too many his ideas into some of the singles he's produced. Of course, what "makes" a song for people is such a diverse topic that it's impossible to argue that a seemingly random turn in a song shouldn't belong there or that a certain rift just doesn't really belong there... When creating music, you really have to remain open minded to ideas and musical concepts in order to enjoy anything other than a few limited genres of music.
As far as Mike not making a vocal appearance on this track... honestly, who the fuck is going to whine about a band changing up their sound? Diversity and Variety are the only two things which keep the music industry alive. Look at System of a Down, Christina Agulaira, Puff Daddy, ACDC, Alicia Keys, Led Zeplin, Bones Apart, Tim McGraw, SlipKnot, or whatever you listen to or think is "good music"... the only thing that has allowed them to exist in the music industry is a mixture of Diversity and Variety - in whatever way you want to think about it. No one wants to listen to a block chord repeated over and over, much less during the course of an hour, and especially not over several years... Regardless how much people hate listening to people bitch and whine, Linkin Park still exists because they are offering a sound to the table that other artists arn't fufilling.
Boohoo, not everyone loves your indie rock or other underground creations. Not everyone loves satanic ritual or christianity either. Watch out! Minutes to Midnight is a reference to the Doomsday Clock which calculates how many "minutes" to midnight. Midnight is when scientists believe the world is gonna break out wif nuclear war. The Doomsday Clock has changed in time due to Hitler, Iran testing nuclear weapons but has also gone further away from Midnight due to peace treaties and end of wars. Linkin Park are just showing the events that have changed the time on the Doomsday Clock.

In all honesty, I first heard this song on the radio. "New Linkin Park single coming up". I was pumped, Linkin Park was the seed that introduced me to the world of rock which led me to all the bands I worship now. Music starts, dope piano Mike, Rob nice beat. But 15 seconds in the smile faded from my face. Fuck. There goes another band to the corperations of America. Poppy, simplistic, Chesters singing voice sounds pretty good, oh god Mike can't be "nah nah nahing" at the end. As the song faded from the radio i tried to hold up hope, maybe this was the most radio friendly song chosen by record exects as the first single, there has to be something better on the album. Maybe Mikes lead vocal song on the record will sound good. May 11th we find out, but you'll find me behind my computer, cuz this song lost LP my 15 bucks.

The new LP album is called Minutes to Midnight, this title is referencing the Doomsday Clock. This clock was introduced when a physicist wife, who was an artist drew the clock for a magazine cover.
If this clock should reach midnight, we are all dead.
Wow, now this video has a little common meaning to it doesn't it.
The clock even advanced in January of this year, from seven, to five.
So all the images you see in the video, are all things that weigh on the clock and determine its movement, towards, or away from midnight.
All LP is trying to say is, are you some twisted sick fuck that wants it closer to midnight. Or do you want it to move away. That choice they leave to all of us.

I think the song is pretty good...I miss some of the older stuff but then again..this is just one single..I haven't heard the whole album yet...they've always experimented with new sounds...and if anyone hasn't thought about it yet, one step closer and numb sound almost like two entirely different sounds..but they're both good songs. At the danger of comparing them to an incredible band like the Beatles(which let me point out right now...they are not equal...I'm just using this as an example)...the beatles music style at the beginning of their career and their sound at the end were extremely different..they lyrics also varied as well...people get older and they change...so how they feel about the world...what they want to express...also changes. Face it most of these guys are 30...they're not the angry young college kids they were in 2000...change is good. I've always appreciated their sound and their lyrics...if you look back at all their other music videos...believe it or not..this is one of their better ones...cliches yes...but LP has never really been good at making music videos...you can't be good at everything...the music and chester's voice makes up for all of it though...this is one of the best bands I've ever heard.

Well, to all of you haters up there, of Linkin Park and whoever else in the music industry, I would like for you all to review your facts before ripping on such bands. Now first of all, the summarization of this video has "card-stacked" the points against songs and images like these. First of all, Linkin Park has decided to abandon rap-rock, because they had not aimed for such a song genre. In their new album, Minutes To Midnight, reports and interviews have indicated that the band will be leaving out much of the rap and nu-metal sounds from the older albums.(And they probably won't even get to #1 in the music world, because rappers already hate them for "not really rapping", rockers hate them for "not rocking enough", which leaves only the small group of people who listen to their mixing-rap-to-rock skills.) Then, as for the last few words above, Linkin Park puts considerable effort into their music videos, and they try not to make such a big political deal from it. Although they do include images of "What I've Done", it is purely due to the matching with their lyrics. If you really listened to the song, you would notice that it is about the rapture/apocalypse/ragnarok, where in that time, a review is taken for the human race. It shows the bad parts of what our species has caused for one another. Sure, you could state that "Oh, they show too much irony in their video - it doesn't make sense", but then you would be overlooking their saying of "Let Mercy Fall And Wash Away". You would also be overlooking the symbolism in the growing plant.
As for those who have only come to brag how Linkin Park makes other bands look good, why do you even bother with watching if you know that they suck? I believe that is the hypocrisy here. Sure, I don't like those meddling people who just come in to say "Linkin Park Rocks. Woot!!!", but burning on a group who puts effort into music is equally as bad.
Finally, I'll say that children these days can get into anything, and that they have odd behaviors to check out more odd things, but that's just because they're children. As the years go on, earlier generations learn more about adult and comprehensive materials. It's not a great problem we have to face when it comes to information from music. It is just what we have to face when parents lack the skill to stop our children from imitating the bad parts in community. In fact, they should learn more about the world and the cruel truth from the thousands of lies. That's what separates them from "kiddy" and mature. It is not music like Linkin Park that turns them bad. It is just their environment where bad information is tested.
And obviously, if you want a plot or something, you don't go into music to find it. To whoever compared a book to a song, I laugh, for obviously we all listen to songs for enjoyment. I personally like "What I've Done", although it may lack the music comprehension that appears in such bands as "The Rolling Stones", "The Beatles", and etc. The only reason why such a small idea is put into music videos is because artists like to add flavor along with text and song.
P.S. We all have our own beliefs, so I do not except you all to suddenly come to my side of the argument just for this. I'm just posting this comment up so that others who come here can learn more than just one-sided fact. And to all of you who just come to post because they're upset, remember to respect others' beliefs and know that everyone else might have something other in mind. this video is absolutely awful. linkin park is a decent band, at best. but after i saw this video, i was like, 'who do they think they are, U2?' anyone else think the clips of the band were way too similar to the vertigo video? or maybe the killers' 'somebody told me' video? i suppose rocking out in the desert is hardly an original concept, but their way of making it unique was to throw in a bunch of free-use clips of nature and news events? i thought foo fighters hit bottom when they did it in 'best of you' but at least they're a good band. and they didn't use clips of 9/11 to cheaply make their video seem memorable and meaningful. it was a condensed version of the cheapness that 'united 93' was.
in summary, this video is a poorly made rip-off of so many other videos and ideas. it sucks.

I think that all of you who don't like the video or think it is stupid, is because your and the countless other generations before ours F***ed up this world so bad. Almost all of the images you see are of wars from the "Babyboomer" generation, the civil rights movement, and the development and use of the atomic bomb in WWII, and the global warming issues we all face today and if we do not do something about it today, there will be no tommorrow for our children. I think the reasons you do not like the video is because it shows all the messed up things that have occured because the past generations did not learn from the mistakes of the ones before them. This video is meant to show all of the horrible things that have and are still happening on this tiny little planet of ours which we call the Earth. It shows us that it is NOT to late to change the world and that it is up to every person to do their part. Maybe, no hopefully people will open their F***ing eyes before it is to late....

No one's right, no one's wrong. Accept that other people enjoy music different from your own tastes and just let it be.

I'm a science teacher and one of the curricular units I teach covers environmental responsibility. Last year, one of my students asked if she could share this video with the class. While I was apprehensive at first and insisted on previewing it, I was unexpectedly amazed. I found the lyrics and visuals were great at delivering a very clear message: We have a responsibility to recognize that our actions are harming our world and its people and we need to change what we're doing.
"What I've done." Such a simple statement, yet a huge one. Actually recognizing and taking responsibility for mistakes instead of casting blame elsewhere or dening the existence of a problem - it's refreshing to hear. And it's an important message to our youth and world today.
I think Lincon Park has made this a really smart video. And the lyrics go so well with it. Actually, it has impressed me so much, that I have started to show this video to each new semester of Science students I teach. Then, I ask my students what they think the video is saying to them. And ever time I am amazed at the comments the students make and the different things they see and pull out of the it. It has proven to be a very positive video/tool.
Believe it or not, teenagers/youth do listen and take notice. So regardless of whether or not people like Lincoln Park, this video has sparked some really positive discussions in the lives of my students, and it has caused them to look differently at themselves and what WE’ve done.
