New Linkin Park Video - "What I've Done"
You probably like Linkin Park about as little as we do, but we're always curious about what the kids will be listening to. And since the irritating rap-rockers have a new album coming out that most assuredly will debut at #1, we thought we'd show you what they're up to, just so you're a well-informed hater. Clearly this is the band's attempt at a Very Important Video -- unless the images of 9-11, Gandhi, Castro, Saddam, the KKK, and melting glaciers are meant to be ironic. Wait do they have irony in nü-metal? 'Cause that would explain a lot.

if you thought kevin federline, nickelback, and kid rock were bad, then you've never heard linkin park. much worse than cute is what we aim for. video's even more boring than snow patrol's chasing cars, both lame versions.

did i forget to mention, WORST BAND OF ALL TIME!!!
Score = 0
Ok there was no need for this. Had I wanted to watch a Linkin Park video, then I'll wait until it comes on television or search for it on youtube myself...since it's the place to look for videos that haven't debuted yet.
Many people have complained about it before, and well I guess I'm joining the bandwagon Gum.
If you don't have any real news to write, then take the day off.
Score = 0
suck it calllwell. just don't watch the video. stereogum, any and all diversion from my pitiful life is much appreciated.
Score = 0
Oh, jeez.
Score = 0
Calliwell you could have just not pushed play. Agreed it is terrible. Nonsensical garbage with some sort of save the world message in pictures. When did the whiny guy turn into Bono. And why does everyone have to make a desert video. And I'm out.
Score = 0
I didn't hate it - ignore the video, and it's a highly-forgettable alternative record. Something that'll play in WalMart, and that anyone can ignore.
What I did find interesting was that it wasn't Linkin Park - it was a moderately-talented band backing a singer with a one-pitch (but still big) voice. Where's that Shinoda guy? Yeah, he couldn't rap any better than the average high school open mic-er, but I guess I just expected him to be there.
Score = 0
Seriously? I'm pretty sure I've seen that video a million times before. Yeah yeah we know people in Africa are starving, there's a revolution in some shitty backwoods 3rd world country, and everyone's been brainwashed by the climate change propaganda. Oh Lord save us the world is going to hell.
Score = 0
Oh jeez, the soaring bald eagle totally did it for me. Nothing says cliche symbolism like a bald eagle soaring through the clear desert sky. Damn I love it.

Do you really think this is going to do well? The nu-metal "kids" who liked Linkin Park when they first got big aren't kids any more.
I doubt teenagers these days even know what Linkin Park is.

I liked Linkin Park when I was in middle/high school (I'm in college now) so I guess that's why I kind of like this song. It's nothing brilliant, but it's not Paris Hilton or Hilary Duff. The video, though, is total shit. (And good point: where did Mike Shinoda go? Off with Fort Minor, into oblivion?)
Score = 1
um, guy, IT IS worse than paris hilton, hilary duff, or nsync. it's a FACT. i don't see how anyone who knows at least 2 different music notes can slightly like anything by this piece of shit band. even infants and retards with an iq of less than 50 don't enjoy linkin park. fort minor also sucks so much, that guy makes kfed and vanilla ice sound like tupac and big l.

Perpetuating the pretentious indie douchebag stereotype one post at a time. What the hell happened to the actual writing? Angry hipster twats with blogging power.
Praise Jesus for Stereogum. My indie cred has been saved with this hard hitting "post"...

I will ALWAYS be a tasteless consumer whore for Linkin Park! Thanks a million times for that video even if it is terribly cliche.

oh, come on, im sure all of you can sing 'in the end' word by word. admit it, even though the video was shit, the song was tolerable.

I hope this post was ironic.
1. Don't couch this post in that lame "well informed music snob" excuse. You know you're doing it for the hits. period.
2. At least it's short. And maybe it'll get some kids interested in "big issues." What's so tacky about that?

I'm looking forward to Stereogum's coverage of the new Rooney album!

and why do these "mainstream" posts get the most comments all the time, We all like them and we need to exercise our elitism by bashing these sort of posts.
anyways, I dont care too much for nu-emo-metal. Its an alright song. The video is a bit corny with all the conscious stuff going on though.

Anyone else kind of feel sorry for the rapper guy?
Because if nu metal's taught us one lesson, it's that rapping over rock and metal is just complete shit. And I wonder if during the making of the new record the rapper guy was always coming to the studio, excited about all these new raps he'd written, and how the other guys decided to deal with it. Did they just keep putting him off, until they decided to let the producer have a "talk" with him?
In the end, though, it's nice that they at least let their boy, you know, strap on a guitar and whatnot. I wonder if they plug him in.

He looks like a Dave Gahan wannabe, you frickin' doofuses. Same old song, same old shit, same old formula.

wow, that was deep. i mean, starving kids, nuclear war, women who are overly-conscious of their body shapes, animlas in oil slicks, and i haven't even mentioned half of the rest of it....linkin park really are tackling the big issues head on, and i'm sure they'll provide us with deep and meaningful solutions to all these problems and more come next interview.

I'm a fan of Linkin Park's other albums. Not this.
This is the best they could come up with in 4 years? It's as if they are trying to streamline their sound by stripping out everything interesting. Mr. Hahn gets narrowly a memorable scratch in, and Shinoda is relegated to that guitar melody. I'm wondering what six people are going to do on stage with essentially four parts. And then the cheesefest video is just shit-icing on the shit-cake.
I hope this isn't representative of the rest of the album.
Score = 0
This is like one of those videos you do in high school where you have to relate everything said in the song to a cliche image.

Good call, KingHater. This song is funny, because in the really high frequencies you can make out the sound of the record company talking to them about The Fray and All American Rejects.
I love how they took the crunch off their heavy guitars, dude sang more than he screeched, and the rapper guy is completely absent. I can't wait to see which radio trend they'll fit into in 2011. God willing.

Linkin Park is a great band. Sure, I'm not that big of a fan anymore, but being one of those "Nu-Metal Kids", I still remember them and their awesome music.
If you don't like their music, then at least respect them. Because they ARE great musicians!
Score = 0
To KingHater: You clearly don't know Linkin Park. Because if you did, you wouldn't have said all that stuff about 'that rapper guy'. Those 'other guys', as you call them, would never say that. And they most certainly wouldn't have gone to the producer.
Maybe you should start thinking first, before you write crap that isn't true.

I agree! Apparently most of you don't know much about Linkin Park. That's ok, just don't post and act like you do. Mike Shinoda ("the rapper guy") has always played guitar for the band and does so in several songs when they're on stage, so it was of no surprise to me to see him playing in this video. There are several songs on their other albums where Chester sings all or most of the song, so this song isn't any different in that regard, so the comment about talking to producers about not having Shinoda rap doesn't make sense. Finally, LP has always been a band that takes on all sorts of issues in their music and videos. They've volunteer for disaster relief efforts and have already played at Music for Relief and Live 8, so for them to headline a Live-Aid type concert this year (as stated in a previous post) would only stay true with what they have stood for and done in the past.
Yes, the video could have been better...as an LP fan I would love to hear more screaming and something heavier for the first release off the new album, but overall it's not terrible and I'll definitly still be buying the new album.
Score = 0
I've been a semi-fan of Linkin Park during their career... I've seen ups and downs of their productions. I think Chester has a great voice, though Linkin Park rarely puts it to any actual use with all the angst they poorly portray through Chester's clenched teeth.
As far as Mike Shinoda goes... he's a musical genius who can't rap worth a fuck. Simple as that. I think Mike Shinoda has a strong ear for melody and presents fairly creative musical concepts. Effectively crafting these concepts into final products, however, has not always proven to be his strong point. Personally, I think Mike tends to get caught up in cramming too many his ideas into some of the singles he's produced. Of course, what "makes" a song for people is such a diverse topic that it's impossible to argue that a seemingly random turn in a song shouldn't belong there or that a certain rift just doesn't really belong there... When creating music, you really have to remain open minded to ideas and musical concepts in order to enjoy anything other than a few limited genres of music.
As far as Mike not making a vocal appearance on this track... honestly, who the fuck is going to whine about a band changing up their sound? Diversity and Variety are the only two things which keep the music industry alive. Look at System of a Down, Christina Agulaira, Puff Daddy, ACDC, Alicia Keys, Led Zeplin, Bones Apart, Tim McGraw, SlipKnot, or whatever you listen to or think is "good music"... the only thing that has allowed them to exist in the music industry is a mixture of Diversity and Variety - in whatever way you want to think about it. No one wants to listen to a block chord repeated over and over, much less during the course of an hour, and especially not over several years... Regardless how much people hate listening to people bitch and whine, Linkin Park still exists because they are offering a sound to the table that other artists arn't fufilling.
Boohoo, not everyone loves your indie rock or other underground creations. Not everyone loves satanic ritual or christianity either. Watch out! The world might just end based on a small collective of narrow minded people who perfered that all music sounded to their liking... oh, but then that'd make your shit mainstream... and you'd have to whine about that too.
Pointing back to another post:
In saying that this music is worse than Paris Hilton, though, or some relative air head... you've succeeded in embarrassing only yourself in more ways than I could ever call you out for. I laughed really hard at that. Kudos.

Obviously you guys are the kinda ppl who judges a book by its cover, i doubt anyone of you guys know what Minutes to Midnight is about. Minutes to Midnight is a reference to the Doomsday Clock which calculates how many "minutes" to midnight. Midnight is when scientists believe the world is gonna break out wif nuclear war. The Doomsday Clock has changed in time due to Hitler, Iran testing nuclear weapons but has also gone further away from Midnight due to peace treaties and end of wars. Linkin Park are just showing the events that have changed the time on the Doomsday Clock.

It really pisses me off when a band like Linkin Park comes out with a video like this, and certain people criticize them for trying to send a (god forbid) truthful message. Maybe if these people actually woke up and tried to solve the problem they're causing, then they wouldn't have to listen to bands like LP sing about it and we would all be free of these peoples' stupid whining. Anyone who knows Linkin Park knows that they've done a lot as far as humanitarian and environmental efforts are concerned, and they were doing it a LONG time before this video. And no, they're not like U2's Bono who will waste $100 million on marketing to raise $2 million for Africa. LP actually cares, and all you haters can just shut up because, honestly, no one cares about your criticism when you yourselves are the source of the problem they're talking about.
Score = 0
life is suffering, how important is it to shit on ones attempt to sing, inform or entertain. You show your ignorance
Score = 0
All of you people trying to criticize this song, please shut the f*** up. You obviously have nothing better to do than whine and complain about this video. I for one enjoy their music. Linkin Park is a humanitarian band that spends alot to help suffering people around the globe. Clearly, many of you have your heads stuck too deep up your assh*les to appreciate music. dsa has it correct, Minutes to Midnight is a reference to the doomsday clock. And as for Mike Shinoda's absence, he is there. He just isn't singing anymore lead vocals. He is, however, singing in the song.
And my final point: Rock music for the win. Critics, please go to hell.

I know this sounds crazy, but LP's first major release was an extremely important piece of music history. I am almost certain that without it, the Postal Service would not have existed. I know, crazy, but potentially true.
With that said, this song does stink. It doesn't have the original angst of the debut.

Any one who doesn't like linkin park is retarded they are the only rock band that have made their sound unique .
come on honestly most of u people trashing on the Lp probably like new found glory or sum 41 which sound similar to umm let me guess blink 182
so i dont know how u people get the idea that linkin park is no good their sound is the most unique out there
so better stop being hypocrits out there and learn how to appreciate uniqeness so peace out

In all honesty, I first heard this song on the radio. "New Linkin Park single coming up". I was pumped, Linkin Park was the seed that introduced me to the world of rock which led me to all the bands I worship now. Music starts, dope piano Mike, Rob nice beat. But 15 seconds in the smile faded from my face. Fuck. There goes another band to the corperations of America. Poppy, simplistic, Chesters singing voice sounds pretty good, oh god Mike can't be "nah nah nahing" at the end. As the song faded from the radio i tried to hold up hope, maybe this was the most radio friendly song chosen by record exects as the first single, there has to be something better on the album. Maybe Mikes lead vocal song on the record will sound good. May 11th we find out, but you'll find me behind my computer, cuz this song lost LP my 15 bucks.

Oh yeah, and all those complaining about the video, Go bury you head in the sand. All you hollow heads should think first, if it isnt too much trouble.
The new LP album is called Minutes to Midnight, this title is referencing the Doomsday Clock. This clock was introduced when a physicist wife, who was an artist drew the clock for a magazine cover.
If this clock should reach midnight, we are all dead.
Wow, now this video has a little common meaning to it doesn't it.
The clock even advanced in January of this year, from seven, to five.
So all the images you see in the video, are all things that weigh on the clock and determine its movement, towards, or away from midnight.
All LP is trying to say is, are you some twisted sick fuck that wants it closer to midnight. Or do you want it to move away. That choice they leave to all of us.
Oh yeah and Chester looks like a fucking panzy. Still a good video tho.

the new songs a little soft for my taste and the video is pretty chockfull of cliches.. its a cool idea, but i think it could have been done a little better- there've been a lot of similar videos with image clips of the same sort of thing.. someone should try to make an impacting message in a way that doenst involve copying every other video...
anyway, i just had to get this out: i saw the video for the first time this morning, and HOTDAMN if Chester doesnt look just like my boyfriend in that crazily sexy new style of his. if theres one thing i love about recent music, its his new wardrobe. yowza

I am sorry, I agree that we could do without another "Save the world video" and I am not commenting on the video, but it has a CLEAR message....That is why we are all going to suffer in the end, because people don't give a shit.... I went through Hurricane Katrina, my home used to be BILOXI, MISS and my husband is a soldier, and has been to Iraq every year since 911. Until you have something ripped from you, you will never appreciate anything. So stop chastising the world around you and realize what you are doing and what you have to loose. Skinny women get over it, size -0 doesnt look good on anyone and if you are going to starve yourself at least donate the money you are saving on food and give it to people who really want to be a size 6 but can't afford it. Racist's stop hating a culture you know nothing of, and seeing every Arab for a Jihad, A Black man or woman for the n- word or a White person a cracker, a Mexican for a beaner, An Asian as a chink because chance's are they are here to get a better life, and they work a hell of alot harder than you. And don't judge war because you would not be free to live the way you do if it wasnt for the men and women that serve our country.

I cant say anymore caus ive grown out of nu metal and do think its shite now but if people get enjoyment out of it then wats the prob, jus dont listen to it urself. they're hardly the worst band in the world and its a cheesy video but they aint hurtin anyone. end of the day they're making $$$$$$$ and livin the life, dont take things so seriously, like the music u like and hate the music u hate, we're all guilty of hatin sometimes jus dont go outta the way to make other people do the same.

I think the song is pretty good...I miss some of the older stuff but then again..this is just one single..I haven't heard the whole album yet...they've always experimented with new sounds...and if anyone hasn't thought about it yet, one step closer and numb sound almost like two entirely different sounds..but they're both good songs. At the danger of comparing them to an incredible band like the Beatles(which let me point out right now...they are not equal...I'm just using this as an example)...the beatles music style at the beginning of their career and their sound at the end were extremely different..they lyrics also varied as well...people get older and they change...so how they feel about the world...what they want to express...also changes. Face it most of these guys are 30...they're not the angry young college kids they were in 2000...change is good. I've always appreciated their sound and their lyrics...if you look back at all their other music videos...believe it or not..this is one of their better ones...cliches yes...but LP has never really been good at making music videos...you can't be good at everything...the music and chester's voice makes up for all of it though...this is one of the best bands I've ever heard.
