New Live Hold Steady - "Lord I'm Discouraged"
The boys and girls of America are still turning out in droves to see the Hold Steady as they continue touring on the back of last year's Gummy winning LP, but you can't blame the guys for wanting to shake up the setlist and keep things fresh. The folks at MFR wrote in to tell us there's three new tunes making the Steady's set these days, stating their fave to be "Lord I'm Discouraged" ("Magazines" and "Joke About Dyer'Maker" are the other two they're playing). It's a break away from the fist pumping barroom anthems, something more along the lines of "First Night" in its closing time balladry, Craig sounding wistful, maybe shedding a tear in his beer, looking for an uplift of spirits, or maybe just another cup of 'em. This clip comes from the band's performance in Columbus, OH on 10/27.

Coming out in droves? Really? Then why was their show next week in San Francisco (a hotbed for indie rock, usually) moved from the 2400 person capacity Warfield to the 800 capacity Mezzanine?

They just played two nights in Chicago (at the metro, the capacity of which is 1,100), both of which were certainly sold out. And based on the comments on MFR, there were a lot of people at the MPLS show as well. Weird that SF got down graded. Don't know why that would be.

They've actually been playing a new one called "Ask Her For Some Adderall" quite a bit as well. As far as I know, "Joke About Jamaica" (or whatever they're calling it) was only played in Chicago on Tuesday.
And I was at the MSP show last night...it was definitely sold out. But you'd expect that, what with it being the hometown for most of the guys. Sad to hear that other shows may not be selling as well. This show actually got moved from First Ave to the (seated, larger) State Theatre because of the draw.

don't know the capacity of the Tralf but the Columbus show felt awful packed by the time Hold Steady hit the stage. a little thin during Art Brut and Federale, but the place was definitely stocked up by the end of the night.

I was at the Metro show...it was definitely sold out. The only show I've been to there that was more packed was LCD Soundsystem last Spring.
Great show...new songs sounded good...pumped that they recorded it for a live album

they downgraded by choice in a couple of cities like here in philadelphia. when they got the schedule for the shows they called up their booking agent and figured that playing a larger less intimate venue would be no fun. plus they weren't close to capacity at the electric factory and nearly sold out the tla, so any of these kids going would rather see them at a smaller venue anyway. much appreciated.

heyo i took that video! and to be honest I didn't think the Newport in Columbus was packed.... I mean there were alot of people, but we definitely weren't sardines and crammed in there by any means. Very doubtful it was sold out.

Consistently the most soulful band in rock right now. Filling the gap that's been around since Uncle Bob went off course. Despite infatuations w/ the Battles and Don Cabs of the world, I will always come back to groups like these guys and Lucero.

I'm hopefully going to see them in a few weeks in Richmond, VA. I'm really looking forward to it, I hear they put on an awesome show, and videos like this make me really excited! Just have to buy my tickets. I should probably get on that...
