New Live of Montreal Video - "For Our Elegant Caste"
Even though it didn't make it onto Out's list, of Montreal's most recent work Skeletal Lamping is a fun, ambitious, polysexual, Ziggy Stardusted record. In this live footage, of Montreal tackles one of Skeletal's tracks "For Our Elegant Caste" while it was still titled "Softcore," as Kevin Barnes calls the "environmental" song in the clip. We're also treated to a creepy guy in a silver mask getting his "id" engaged by a guy in a tiger mask. Which is something you don't get on the album proper. All the action was captured in Fall 2007 at the Avalon in Los Angeles.
Skeletal Lamping is out 10/7 via Polyvinyl. It's available for preorder and paradigm shifting. Also, for folks in the Seattle area, there's going to be a "of Montreal's Skeletal Lamping Laser Listening Session" 9/12 @ 9:15 (sharp) at the Pacific Science Center in the Seattle Laser Dome. I'm a huge fan. And while I usually really appreciate bands stretching boundaries and trying new things, Kevin hasn't really been charting new territory with his glam 80s dance pop stuff since he rebelled against E6 some years ago.
What is this album #4 of this incarnation? I look forward to the next phase in hopes that it will be more unique. I liked him better when he was less famous and that was because his music was a bit more challenging. So many of his decisions seem to be a directed at commercial appeal.
That being said, I still love of Montreal and love thier music; Kevin's worst is still pretty f-ing awesome.

What is commercially appealing about Skeletal Lamping? How is this album not challenging? Granted, I came around to it much faster than other people who said it had to grow so I am not one to say it's incredibly difficult to like but cmon. This is not an album you give just anyone to listen to and expect them to be immediately be into it at all. An Eluardian Instance and maybe this song and another on their own are pretty easy to get into but as a whole, and for the average person, nah.

Well, since opinions are hardly verifiable or, for that matter, debatable, I would say 'okay, you disagree, good then'. But I am confused when you admit that you found it easily and immediately accessible while disagreeing with my opinion that it is accessible.
I guess we just all have to fight, right? That is another id impulse, isn't it?

what about skeletal lamping says "commercial" to you? if anything, this release says that kevin is, as he always has been, making music for himself. he doesn't think twice about commercial appeal.

Here's where my anti-glam 80s dance pop stance began: the 80s. That is why I gravitated towards alternative - it wasn't style obsessed - it was about the music. I hated this sort of thing in the 80s and I hate it now.
I suppose I should be crucified because you are an of Montreal fan (like myself) and have reservations about the direction of one of my favorite bands. Go ahead. And if you love being as antagonizing in person as you are online, I'll be at the Tabernacle show in Atlanta on 11-8-08.

Man. What ever happend to groups having enough natural charisma to keep the audience entertained. Most bands today make me feel like i'm listening and watching Pee Wee's Playhouse.
