New Metallica - "The Day That Never Comes" (Live At Leeds)
As Amrit sagely noted when discussing Metallica's new 7:56-long Death Magnetic track "The Day That Never Comes": "At 5:00 [it] becomes the last half of "One." (Literally.) Before that, it's 'Unforgiven' meets 'Fade To Black.'" (But not really as good as that. James says: "Love is a four letter word / You're in this prison." We say: Ooph, James said that.)." Or, as a wise commenter said in dialog form:
"So guys, for the new album I'm thinking we record all Load era type songs and then tack on 3 minutes of And Justice For All style jamming...""Sounds great, James, our dumbass fans will never catch on!"
To add my two cents, this live version of the track, recorded with more than one camera at the Leeds Festival, is muddier than the recorded take, but clearly demonstrates that the center does not hold.
It's "The Song That Never Comes," a bunch of things that sound familiar, but never add up to much beyond sounding familiar. If you want more late-period live Magnetic, you can still hear the Ozzfest rendered "Cyanide."

You don't need "metal knowledge" to opine on the quality and merits of a Metallica song (especially these days), but in this case you happen to be dead wrong. If Brandon is the same guy I think he is, he oozes "metal knowledge," as evidenced by countless Show No Mercy columns he has written for Pitchfork that have certainly impressed me (and I've been listening to metal for over 25 years).

why do you continue to bash bands that can sell out arenas, and for the most part are making solid music- Metallica, Verve, Oasis- show some class Stereogum- Not sure what your objective is anymore- For the most part- the artists you are positive about- are not making timeless music - (see Metallica, Verve, Oasis) also don't think the press teams are keeping score- one day you'll want something from them and they'll say sorry. It's about respect.

1. Lars hasn't gotten worse, he was always a poor, tasteless drummer. He is a tennis player who has an interest in drums.
2. Metallica are poor, tasteless musicians.
3. "metal knowledge" = understanding the constructs of poor song writing that depends on technical merit to give false musical validity. Good music has nothing to do with how fast you can play.
4. Selling out arena's is not indicative of making solid music. It simply means that you are effective at appealing to the mindless masses who have no interest in exploring any musical options that differ from what has been crammed down their throats by corporate radio for the past 20 years.
5. Metallica are not timeless they are shameless.

The comment about recording load-style songs w/ tacked on jams is entirely accurate. Also accurate is that most of the fans - and I'm a guy who credits ...And Justice for turning me into a musician - will eat it up.
I was happy to hear Kirk's playing though - I've always thought he was a humble guy who knows he isn't God's gift, despite the ridiculous guitar player accolades. He just plays fun, fast, singable solos and this time around his playing is cleaner than I've ever heard it, and he isn't abusing the wah. Just the fact that he's gotten more articulate/less wah-heavy is a pretty amazing step forward for him as Metallica's lead guitar player... even if Metallica sucks so hard now that it doesn't matter.
But for anyone who thinks Metallica has always sucked and been tasteless... the transition/clean sections from To Live is To Die, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice, and parts of the clean/acoustic guitar layering in One is just patently gorgeous music. "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Bleeding Me" off of re-load and load are also fantastic, weird songs.

Either way these guys are fucking legends. they recorded 4 of the greatest metal records of all-time and were always lightyears ahead of the competition...bob rock of course put an end to all that...stop fucking hating. i agree that people take this stuff way too seriously. this is music we're talking about. all it's here for is to listen to and enjoy. if you don't like one album from another; don't listen to it. listen to the one you do like. you're not going to die if metallica dosn't write something as good as AJFA and yet somehow still sound original. yes the new stuff that we've heard so far sounds similar to other things they've written in the past, and that's because it's metallica. metallica will always sound like metallica.
not that i didn't like st. anger (i thought it was good song writting. it's a good fun listen if you can get your head out of your ass, get over the recording concept, and get over the fact that it dosn't sound EXACTLY like other metallica), but i'm glad to hear them getting back to that good "classic" metallica sound again. the guitars are good, the drums are good, trujillo's bass sound is very refreshing, and james is back to singing the way he does best. I hope he keeps on putting that real ugly "yeagh" at the end of every sentence. it's fun.

humm... lotta bad words in each direction. just wanna throw in something: You DO have to have "metal knoledge" to at least reckognize where it comes from. Sure the slightly boring first ballad-part is no killer, neither is the short "One"-reminescence. But the undoubted late Thin Lizzy / early Maiden-influenced double lead following, the riffs in between and Kirks solo towards the end are the fucking best Metallica moments since "Justice"-days. And worth any of the unspectacular rest! Period!!!!
