New No Age Video - "Eraser"
Last time we wrote about No Age, John Norris was interviewing them about the lo-fi scene. So not all that surprising the LA duo were invited to MTV to chat with Pete Wentz and debut the Andy Bruntel-directed clip for "Eraser." It features lots of slo-mo running, balloons, and those colorful t-shirts everyone loves. FNMTV guest panelist Kid Sister gave it a thumbs up! Watch this way...

Dean and Randy even did a little comedy skit with Pete after the commercial. And a statuesque Barbadian singer named Rihanna performed (I think she's gonna be big, you guys). Next week: the first video from She & Him, featuring banjo-playing ghosts.

im gonna be honest here. I know alot of people like these kids, but no matter hwo amny times I listen to any of their songs, I just...I don't like it. I really don't find it appealing or even enjoyable. The video was weird,too.

I am totally with you, gaby. I don't really understand the hype. There is nothing technical in the playing or in the songwriting that really does it. Unfortunately, I think it is a case of a really mediocre band getting popular because of their indie-ness rather than their talent.

Here are some of the reasons I have loved everything about No Age since they came onto the scene:
1) It can be noisey
2) It can be pop
3) It can be loud
4) It's not technical (technical songwriting can be a turn-off for me, especially when it comes to noise and punk)
5) When, you listen to "Weirdo Rippers," you can set your head on a pillow and take a nap. When you put on "Nouns," you get ready to party. The fact they that they have been able to show an array of sound in just a few releases demonstrates a good craft on a style that is very minimalist to begin with.
6) Everything the guys do has the best of artistic intentions behind it -- from their album booklets, their music videos to their signature t-shirt design
7) They are awesome live
8) Dean Spunt has a great roster on his record label, including Abe Vigoda, who rock.

And if you disagree with that, why even bother checking out No Age (or 90 percent of the artists covered on this web site) to begin with?

A band can be talented in two ways: having skill or having inspiration. Ideally a band will have both qualities, but I think people who love indie music (or punk or many other genres) prefer inspired music over virtuoso instrumentalists. No Age isn't skilled but they are inspired, and I, for one, like the noisy, jangly whimsy of this song.

of course not everyone likes No Age...but I sure do. Regardless, it's pretty crazy that they actually played that video. Most of the song doesn't even have vocals. But whatever, it's one of the best videos I've seen on MTV in æons.

I saw No Age play at the Getty Museum in LA last Friday. It was rad. They were so out-of-place at that venue - there were tons of much older museum patrons that were way confused and running for the hills when they started playing, because they were not prepared for that kind of sound at all.
It was cool because they were well-aware that it was kind of an absurd gig, but obviously honored to be playing there. They were sort-of chuckling to themselves in disbelief the whole time as the sound guy scratched his head and shrugged.
Slam dancing jump-roping, and lots of hullabaloo going on at what is normally a pretty stuffy place. It was a cool vibe, and some great outdoor scenery. And they sounded pretty good despite the fact that their sound was barely hanging on the edge of control the entire time.

I saw No Age for the second time last night here in El Paso. I had so much fun again.
It's all about their attitude. thats why they define their music as "punk". It's the way the music makes you feel. And sure it's not so technical....who gives a fuck? Good music is good music there's no denying this.The fact that they thought, "hey all we need is pre recorded jams, a guitar, drums and our voice." is pretty badass and simple, they didn't need all of these tools and effort o amke me smile, tahts whats dopeeee. The music got me pushing people around but with smiles and then i danced some more and pushed some more and shook my hair and booty every where, i did it thoughout the whole show man. It's always a matter of opinion you like em, alright .you dont, alright. just don't not give them any credit.
i've had 2 experiences so far...and i'm pretty fucking sore today.

Your right, their not very technical but that's not the point. As for indie-ness? Are you kidding? When my friend saw them with me a few weeks back the first thing he said was how "joe shmo" they looked. You don't like, whatever, we all got our tastes. IMO, No Age are great (and Dean is a very nice fellow)....and so is Mika Miko, Abe Vigoda, The Muslims, and The Sess. (the last two are some San Diego bands, close enough . They've played The Smell.)
