New Paul McCartney - "Ever Present Past"
"Ever Present Past" is a fitting title for Macca's first cut for Starbucks, at least musically. While the song's not bringing back the Beatles sound, it isn't far from his flights with Wings, nor solo records like McCartney II (see: silly synth and compressed, mixed-down guit in the hook). Still, sales will be brisk: it's bubbly and nostalgic enough to make a mark with a similarly reminiscent audience, he's a Beatle, and you can buy it with your Starbucks prepaid card.
Memory Almost Full is out 6/5 on Starbucks' Hear Music. Lyrics after the jump.
"Ever Present Past"
I’ve got too much on my plate
Don’t have no time to be a decent lover
I hope it isn’t too late
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
My ever present past
I’ve got too much on my mind
I think of everything to be discovered
I hope there’s something to find
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
My ever present past
The things I think I did
I do, I think I did
The things I think I did
When I was a kid
I couldn’t understand a word that they were saying
But still I hung around and took it all in
I wouldn’t join in with the games that they were playing
It went by, it went by, in a flash
It flew by, it flew by, in a flash
There’s far too much on my plate
Don’t have no time to be a decent lover
I hope it’s never too late
Searching for the time that has gone so fast
The time that I thought would last
My ever present past
The things I think I did
I do, I think I did
The things I think I did
When I was a kid
When I was a kid

Thanks for posting this. It's great that Paul's already coming out with a new album, regardless of its label.
Some other fans have observed that the verse melody sounds an awful lot like "Don't Get Around Much Anymore" which Paul did on his Russian album. Is Paul pulling a Dylan here? ;)
I kinda dig "Ever Present Past" and I definitely hear the "McCartney II" likeness, which is cool. The thing that is so typical of Paul though is that he sings the same happy tone no matter the subject matter. Nigel Goodrich helped him get out of that, but obviously this song shows that Paul really hasn't really changed. The guy is cool - he just doesn't always know how to show it.

Memory Almost Full is such an "old-man-confused-by- technology title. Like the name of a Tim Allen stand-up special.

This is his best, most commercial single in years. People may make fun of it because it is McCartney, but the reality is that if a younger artist released the same exact track they'd be championing him.

I love this! Looking at photos of Paul and Linda makes me sad. This is very poppy tho

I liked the single. Lots of hooks, nice lyrics. It has definitely a radio appeal and I hope they give him some airplay.

Wow. That's actually an impressive tune. Aside from a few unfortunate detours (that horrible 9/11 "Freedom" track...) Paul continues to age rather gracefully.
The video, on ther other hand, needs some work.

Oh should have mentioned, that's not the official vid! That's just the single, set to a fan's Macca flipbook. Though Paul's been increasingly vocal about Linda's influence on the new material...

I like it. Reminds me of some of the new Modest Mouse stuff.

it really is quite good.

Surprisingly good. Chaos and Creation was a decent album, but it was still too sugary in places. It's good to hear that he can still put out some good music, though. Keep at it, Paul.

nice hooks, catchy chorus, cool sound...Paul is still the man...I agree that he takes hits for being McCartney but for sure if someone younger put this out it would be a Billboard top ten...maybe top 5...it's a shame the young guns don't have one-tenth the talent...there's a lot of crap out there today...

you all were joking, right? right???

I LOVE the new single !! I loved some solo stuff, and some not...got turned off of him throughout the 80's, and only came back to listen to the later period stuff in the last two years...Flowers in the Dirt, Off The Ground, Flaming Pie, Driving Rain, Chaos & Creation in the Backyard, and Run Devil Run are ALL actually great albums !! He is one incredible hot streak...usually releases original material every 4 years, but this is a very fast follow-up (fastest in over 25 years)...if the single is any indication...then, as Nick Lowe might say it's Pure Pop for Now People !! Just amazing !!!

Oh, radio will definitely pick it up. If only because the decision makers are usually forty somethings who grew up with Sir Paul. Actually, it's not a bad tune.
I always wonder what would happen if Hit Radio stations would pick it up and play a song like this between, say, Beyonce and Avril Lavigne. A lot of younger people might even like it.

kinda poppy, isn't it!? Anyway, a fresh, new song of macca is always well-accepted, but i prefer chaos & creation's works, for now :P

I just caught this on the radio here in Long Island, NY. It was on the oldies channel and I was only in the car for less a half a minute of the song (the end) and I Instantly knew "this sounds like Paul" Its a great catchy tune and I can't wait for the album now!

If Paul should tour again this song will have everyone on their feet. Utterly infectious. Melodically it is pure joy.

This video is made by a fan, who had some spare time, so it's not an official release.

What's not to like? Good clean fun, Classic Paul. He's like the Energizer Bunny, he just keeps going and going....

It will also get tons of video and airplay because of the tie-in to Starbucks.
He finally has a label that will promote his new material.
Also, look back at his work starting with Press to Play. They NEVER release the strongest track first as a single. Starbucks, Capital, Columbian, etc. A bunch of executives with no music marketing acumen and even less taste in music.
So, if you like this one, the rest is probably BRILLIANT!
Peace and Love,
Keith

IT'S A GREAT SONG AND THE STYLE OF IT CAN REALLY MIX IN WITH THE WORKS OF THE NEW YOUNGER GENERATION. IT REALLY SHOWS THAT HE STILL HAS THAT MAGIC OF CREATION IN HIM.

Listening to "Ever Present Past", it's hard to believe Paul is going to be 65 this year! Love the "The things I think I did" chorus. Very catchy. Seems to me Paul may have given Heather's lawyers some fuel with the opening line: "There's far to much on my plate to be a decent lover."

Krup: keep listening rap, would you?
i believe this is what you hear. DOn´t like McCartney? Poor guy!

His voice still sounds amazingly young and vibrant.
This comment from above hits the nail on the head: "This is his best, most commercial single in years. People may make fun of it because it is McCartney, but the reality is that if a younger artist released the same exact track they'd be championing him."
Any other artist releases this, it's top five material. Just like most other recent McCartney stuff.
Older artists like McCartney don't climb the charts. Hopefully being on the Starbucks label and in the bazillion stores will remedy that.
McCartney has one of the most unfairly criticized solo careers ever. Early on, he was inconsistent but you could always find good tracks on any album. As he's aged, his albums have gotten better and better. His last six studio albums, starting with "Flowers in the Dirt" have been outstanding (and have gotten mostly positive reviews). "Memory Almost Full" sounds like it may continue that streak.

Wow!! It is great to hear Paul rock and roll with a GREAT new tune. Maybe it start a trend with the current songs (that is being polite) to go back to good old rock and roll with a melody and decent words. Of course what would be better than to have a Beatle lead the way back.
Score = 0
a great tune for a guy who never gets treated quite fairly by the media---yet always produces---and always sees the glass half full
Score = 0
I think I think he has done it again.Paul has continued his streak since Flowers in the Dirt.If this single gets good air play it will be in the top 10 for sure. Just can't wait for the album and hopefully an 07/08 U.S tour.

Memory Almost Full is a glorious album. Paul knows how to write songs that everyone and I mean everyone can sing, something rapper's cannot do.

Paul Mccartney is a living legend, that a lot of so called Pop stars today could learn a lot from. His solo albums have always been experiments in sound and vision. They have not always been treated fairly by the critics, but if you always based your listening purchases to what they say you should buy and not buy, you have missed some classic Macca moments. The new album Memory Almost Full, harkens back to his early post Beatles output, and dare I say, ranks up there with Band On the Run, Tug Of War, Venus And Mars, and Red Rose Speedway. Paul always has made his best music during times of stress and controversy. This new album should prove to old fans and new fans, that the muse is back in its full flowering form. Welcome back paul, and thanks for this years best album

Excellent album. I think it is actually better than Band On The Run, and in places it is also as good as Abbey Road. My fave album of 2007.

What's with the statement about making fun of him because he is McCartney.
Paul McCartney is a billionaire; is one of the most famous people in the world; sold 17,000 seats for between $100 and $300 in one hour in my town last year and has written more classics songs in a six-year period than 10 artists put together.
Therefore, it does not seem such a bad thing to be McCartney and I don't think his solo career is all that maligned.
As for the song, yes, it's a pop jingle. Gee, I think Paul (and the Beatles for that matter) have always been popsters with just the slightest rock edge every now and then.
Bob Dylan derided the Beatles for their poppiness in the 60s. Paul got over it and went on to become the richest and most succesful Beatle, while Lennon let it get to him.
There is a place in the world for pop.
