New Phoenix Video - "Lisztomania"

thumbnail icon: New Phoenix Video - "Lisztomania"

Nineteenth century classical composer Franz Liszt was the Rex Manning of his day. He got so many chicks, you have no idea. And they would faint at his concerts because he was so awesome. If you're surprised it took this long for a pop act to celebrate the phenomenon in song, you are not a Rick Wakeman completist. But that's fine, Phoenix's tribute is much catchier. In Antoine Wagner's low budget video for the Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (always with the classy titles) single, the French quartet take an inflatable zeppelin bearing the album's name to the Franz Liszt Museum in Bayreuth, Germany. Appropriately enough, by the end of the clip a crowd of ecstatic European hipsters is tousling Thomas Mars' hair. Cool it ladies, he's taken.

If you missed Phoenixomania on SNL earlier this month, all three (!) songs can be viewed here. In January, Mars told us he's especially looking forward to taking "Lisztomania" on the road, and we announced the band's North American dates yesterday, so get with the programme.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is out 5/25 in the US on Loyaute/Glassnote Records.

I think it could have been a good video. My biggest gripe was that they used two different cameras, or at least made it appear that way. Grainy looking 8mm and an HD camera. Plus, there was a goofing off portion, and two separate performance sections. The one where that seemed informal in the house was cool and fit along with the theme of being in Liszt's house. However, there was the uncalled for live performance that did not work.

Great song though. I hope they do well with this album. Not the best album of the year, but perhaps the most fun.

yeah, i think they'll do well with the album especially because they seem to have such a cult following. figures with most music out there being absolute crap -- i'm glad to see these guys and others do so well.

i agree tho, album is a lot of fun, but not a track 1 to last track kind of record --- if you listen to it too many times, its hard to distinguish one song from the next.

i hope some ad person doesnt kill it by putting it on a commercial tho (i.e. old enough - raconteurs, such great heights - postal service -- RIP)...

Consistent delivery of hooky pop/rock has been Phoenix's story since their first records.

Just blogged a piece on French Rock's inventiveness in the 70's from Gainsbourg to the much more obscure. Phoenix fit into that lineage imho...

Between Phoenix, Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective the coolness factor of indie rock has exponentially grown this year.

Honestly, this is a great song, and this is a better video for it, in my opinion. The song doesn't necesarily have an '80s sound to it, but it has a 'get out and dance' attitude to it that fits very well with the 80s mentality found in these movies.

Anyway, I have only heard a few songs from the new album and, like this one, they have sounded awesome. But I have this acheing fear in the back of my mind that it's going to be this years MGMT. Front heavy with a few major standouts, and then weighted down with a bunch of filler.

Of course, I'm only afraid of this because I have heard the first few songs on the album and they were so good I have a hard time believeing the rest of the album will keep that same high quality.
