New Ryan Adams Live Video - "These Girls"
From the same session that yielded a string-lit, blurry clip of Ryan & the Cardinals working through "Everybody Knows," we bring you this easier-on-the-eyes take of Ry's guys getting grungy on Easy Tiger's "These Girls." Tip: Fire up the lava lamp at five minutes.
Before you get your premature evaluation on, though, it's worth knowing that the song sounds NOTHING like this on the record. Head to Ry's Space for a 90-second snippet of the track in all its country-folk glory (along with studio samples of Tiger tunes "Halloween Head," "Two," and "Everybody Knows.") Or just head over to appreciate Ry's love for Mark Slaughter. Pre-order Easy Tiger, out June 26th, on iTunes and get MP3 and live video of "Two" -- but the real boon is a super-secret password for advance Ryan Adams concert tix. Good deal, 'cause you haven't lived 'til you've seen him strut in patent leather platforms.

what i don't understand is what's the deal with the advance ticket thing when a lot of the shows on his tour are already sold out? Makes no sense bc the tix for all the shows have been on sale for weeks to the general public. Unless it's from some special stash for this deal. anyone anyone?

I'm so sick of all this Ryan Adams hype.. he's so boring.

No, it's just my opinion. I was suckered into buying his albums time and time again because people preach of how wonderful he is, and they all suck. He's incredibly bland.
Heartbreaker broke the camels back, for me. That is such a long, overblown, melodramatic, and most importantly BLAND album.
But I'm glad you like him, and I'm glad you like him enough to vehemently defend him like this. It's always good to like an artist so much you'll fight to the death for them. I have a few musicians I'm like that with too. Though, I'm a little more.. uh.. literate, I guess.

Heartbreaker a long, overblown, melodramatic and bland album?
Wow. I mean. Wow. Your opinion. But man, I would not trust it farther than I can throw it.
I am also interested in which bands you would die-hard defend.
I have never thought as Ryan Adams as bland. In fact, many people Ive introduced him to have discovered, as I will always stand by, there is a Ryan song for every mood. I think that is the opposite of bland. Bland is John Mayer.

As much as I like it, I like the original Hey There Mrs. Lovely better...just sayin...
Still has me on the edge of my seat waiting for the album.

I find it incredible how he can completely change his style and make the same song sound like two totally different things, like they're from two different planets or something. I truely love everything Ryan does. He's an inspiration.

I think that there are some songwriters who are more literate than ryan, but they are hard to come by if you're going on lyrical content.
Granted, Ryan isn't the best at not typing and rambling while a bit high now and again - but can't we all say that? He's got a beautiful way with words, and a lovely little voice on him that is amazing considering the way he has been harsh to it o'er the years.
He has a huge combination of voice/guitar/songwriting and personality (for better or worse)
He's top tier in my opinion.

Everybody is entitled to their opinions, that is why music is such a personal art. Remember, once a song is released, it becomes the listener's--no longer the artist's. I think that "Gold " and "Demolition" are two of the best written works out there. I put him up with Gram Parsons(the half-dozen great songs that he wrote in his short life). Like him or Hate him, it cannot be denied that he is a self-abusing tormented artist and sometimes that is what it takes to write the stuff he writes.

This version made me cringe after hearing the original "hey there, mrs. lovely". This new version honest to god sucks horrifically compared to the original. I've been a huge fan for years, but if this is what I can expect from the album than count me out. The only remotely interesting song thus far seems to be "everybody knows". Go back to making Love Is Hell music Ryan, for the love of all that is good!

hahaa. it's funny how people take thigs so seriously on the internet. fo real. y'all so sensitive. take it easy, or as ryan would say "easy tiger."

Ryan appeals to all kinds of music lovers. From metal lovers to folk singers, everyone can appreciate RA. He brings something different to every album he's done. Heartbreaker had the acoustic ballads, Rock and Roll had, um, rock and roll, 29 brought out the longer story telling songs, etc. etc. I don't know how anyone can listen to RA and find something they can truly hate about him. Also there is a rarities and unreleased boxed-set of Ryan stuff that is set to come out this summer which includes the unreleased albums 48 Hours and Suicide Handbook.

Saw him Live last night in London, he wasn't playing any instruments himself due to his "skateboarding accident"...... but i still have to say the show was remarkable.
I think alot of people just dont "get" ryan. He's not your average, run of the mill, 9-5 Commercial radio..... that's what he hates being, hence the reason he does no, or very little press for any of his work ever since Gold....... he had his stint at that, hated playing it live, so now he's doing what he loves and.... as far as i can tell, is enjoying his live shows.
Give the guy a break, the day any-one on here can release 9 albums in 10 years, then you can have your say about whether his albums are "bland" or otherwise.
ps. i dont know if you read the article just below the video here Rut, but this isn't the version that's going on the album

one of the best... there arent many who can crank out so many great songs. its impossible to have a ryan adams "greatest hits" album in my opinion.
-for all those who dont like him, and think he is bland, boring- why do you waste your time writing? it does nothing at all. if you really enjoyed music, and understood it- you would like him.
its you people who just write for the hell of it, just trying to get a response and feel like youre cool.

Because believing Ryan Adams is bland certainly makes a person interested in the same sex. Or something.

Well, I'm glad my comments warranted such repsonse.
As for my opinion on Ryan Adams determining my sexual orientation..well.. uhm.. well...yeah. Sure.
Someone asked me what musicians or artists I'd defend so vehemently, well for one, Elliott Smith. Other bands would be The Wrens, Okkervil River, the Beatles..
and I'm sure you'll all say terrible things about those artists I listed. Go right ahead. I don't care because I know what an opinion is. It's not an attack on any one person or any one idea, it's just an opinion.
Easy Tiger is kind of okay, too. Halloweenhead is a decent enough song, but some others come off as cheesy. Also, after listening to the studio version of "These Girls", which is actually alright, this live version is fucking deplorable. Good god, he raped his own song.

I absolutely love Whiskeytown, Heartbreaker, parts of Gold and and like 6 or 7 tracks on Cold Roses. But do you guys really think that everything he does is great?
The last couple of albums he's written have had some cringe-inducing lyrics. I remember one song on Jacksonville City Nights where the line that he was singing was so fast that he had to talk really fast just to get the line out. You couldn't understand him and it did not rhyme with the line that came before it. That is laziness. And for someone who has written pop masterpeices such as "Damn, Sam," "Crazy About You," and "16 Days," it is really dissapointing.
I think that the new album will be yet another mixed bag of great and God awful tunes. Hopefully he has another Heartbreaker or Pneumonia in him somewhere.
Oh and Evan 1, thank you fot trying to be civil rather than just spewing hate like so many people tend to do. I might not agree with your opinion, but your articulate expression of it is always welcome.
And anyone that thinks the Beatles suck is delusional/too hip for their own good.
Score = 0
what is he doing? seriously, the lyrics alone do not make a song. this may be derived from the same poetry as these girls, but it is not remotely the same song. this kind of shit annoys me, he did this with NY, NY and to be young on the last tour. Ryan, if you change the melody, chords, rhythm, tempo, and dynamics...it's not the same song. after just listening to the clip of these girls on his myspace, this live "version" is very dissapointing. I love him to death, but he needs to pull his head out of his ass. "GUITAR SOLO!!"

Ryan Adams in my opinion has the very same magic so to speak as what Jerry Garcia had. You can't really put your finger on it and just like with Garcia, most people either loved him or hated him. IMO Ryan is one of the most talented song writers out there today and his vocals just can't be beat.

ryan adams is one of the most prolific & consistent writers of our generation..9 albums in 6 years!! & at least 4 that i know of un-released albums..suicide handbooks is sensational.. heartbreaker was stunning...gold was a great album..demolition a bit hit and miss...rock and roll again hit and miss..but on these albums were some truly great songs...love is hell fantastic...cold roses..maybe a bit of a white album..could have done with editing..and jacksonville and 29 again great albums overall but sometimes it takes many listens for this type of output and variety of music to digest.the finger with malin...interesting!! there is a thread running through all his releases which is certainly golden in the sense you can guarantee at least 4-5 really good songs. To say he is boring and overrated is a bit of a bandwagon throwaway slogan, but I can understand where they are coming from..a few years ago he only had to fart on tape and uncut magazine were literally giving it an award..but forget all that listen to this guy live..the interpretations of his songs from previous albums and you will maybe understand that HE IS a true artist with probaby many more great albums in him that will surpass anything he has yet done.
fly like the bird.............

I'll be the first to talk about how amazing RA is. I have a bunch of his albums, including Jacksonville City Nights, 29 and Cold Roses all on vinyl. He's absolutely amazing, but this clip SUCKS. LOL I'm sorry but I understand what people say when they say boring. But what I can't understand is when people call Ryan boring and praise Wilco, the most boring, over-rated band in history. I'm sorry, but that had to be said.

Hey, chill out. It's his songs and he can do what he wants with them. It'd be like me telling you to only have black coffee... art provokes response good or bad and there's certainly plenty of that. I liked it and he rocked at Manchester Academy, just gutted we didn't get to see him in his patent leather platforms ;D.

pduffy3,
Yes, I was at the shows Wednesday and Thursday. BRILLIANT. Keep your eyes open for that BBC Sessions thing at St Lukes. It was absolutely fabulous. He was chattering a lot between records. You could not have picked a better set list. It was a cabaret affair. 4 round a table. The atmosphere was electric. Afterwards, I asked Stephen Merchant (Extras) if he was asked to 'appear' and he assured me he'd asked to come. There were under 150 people total.

Aaaaaargh. Evan 2 threw in the 'NOT RHYMING IS LAZINESS' card. That's so lame.
Score = 0
Phat C...
sorry if I pissed you off. Let me rephrase that. Not rhyming is not always laziness. The line in question was 4 times longer than the one that preceded it, and was so long that Ryan had to speak really quickly just to get it out. It also didn't come close to rhyming. When you have all of those factors, that is songwriting laziness, and it is incredibly frustrating, especially coming from a songwriter such as Ryan Adams. I tried to state that before, but I guess I didn't do a clear enough job. Check it out for yourself. It's track 2 or 3 from Jacksonville City Nights from what I can remember.
Cheers.

Okay, so I've loved this song since way way back. Compared to Hey There I think the version on Easy Tiger is pretty lame and this live one is actually pretty interesting. I mean, hell, he's only been playing around with it since '99. Same deal with Off Broadway, ugh, the new version is not the same.. Let him butcher that one for fun too. I'll be here to watch.

Oh you silly person. Seen wilco in NY 6/25 followed by RA in Philly 6/28 and I must say "YOU SUCK" for making such an unnecessary comment about Wilco. This is not battle of the bands. You must not know great sound when it slaps you clear in your face to make such a hastely statement.

Regardless of whether or not you like this particular arrangement or some of the choices Ryan's made as an artist, you have to admit that the guy is pretty much capable of doing anything it seems like. I really can't think of many other artists with such a manic catalog. He's like the polar opposite of Tom Petty (no offense to Tom, great songwriter, too).
I mean, everyone complains that he needs to keep making music like Heartbreaker...and sure he'd probably keep writing great songs, but you know how insanely boring that gets after a while to not try new sounds, draw from different influences, etc, etc. Obviously, he feels the same way. And I can't help but get excited every time I hear about a new Ryan release because you really have no clue what it's going to sound like...except for the fact that it'll probably have some excellent songs, usually a few off the mark, and some influence from alt-country, rock and god knows what else.

evan2, youre talking about a great song "the end", where he goes "the waitress tries to bring me change i say no its cool just keep it..." i absolutly love that line. its funny and honest. and i didnt know that artists were required to rhyme every line in a song with another one...

I think this catt's a genius, but he does plenty of shit I don't like. Perhaps that's the magic of genius ... that he embraces the hits and misses. Some of us are never bold enough to lay everything out there. He's great because he's willing to write and explore and re-write and re-incarnate his own music. This is what made the Beatles great. Same shit.
That said, I have to say that "Jacksonville City Nights" is a moving masterpiece, with only a moment or two of too-much-dope-for-his-own-good-ness. He deals bravely with his past, writes some amazing characters ... It's astounding, and it's got room noise ... it's got soul. "Easy Tiger," on the other hand, was quite a letdown. One or two great, great songs, but quite boring and poorly-written. Some lines just don't make great hooks. "Halloween Head" is straight-up not that cool of a hook ...
So there's plenty of RA's material to question, but I still believe he will be one of the great enduring artists of this generation. Not the only one, but he'll certainly have his place ...
